They could have at least padded the metal poles... I know hindsight is 20/20 but still... when I saw the crash that was the first thing that popped into my head (where I reside)...

yes but what will padding do when you are going approx. 90 mph?

The torch looked really really ugly, like a group of fallen trees struck by lightning and covered in snow. o_O I have no idea why they chose something like that... I mean it even had a clearly visible supporting column in the middle. I hope they weren't going for some sense of abstract art.

Well raising the walls and or removing the metal poles would be the best option but too little too late...

Replacing the whole run with the world's largest marshmallow would be the best option :)

    WHO KNOWS
I think that they definitely could have put some padding on the poles, but it looks like it wouldn't have done much. Did you see his neck as he crashed?

This is not what the other lugers are saying.
I mean, I don't know anything about this sport, but some lugers got injured and a guy is dead.

I understand this is a dangerous sport, but what about protecting those poles with plexiglas?

I might be wrong, but it's possible to improve the safety of this sport.

I guess they could try... but luge and bobsleigh have always been insanely dangerous anyway. Even without the poles there's a risk of decaptiation if you flip over and some of those corners have a pull of up to 7G, any number of limbs could get wrecked due to the speed alone.

What about a plexiglas wall like the ones for the hockey fields?

As said before, I don't know anything about this sport and I don't know if it's a stupid idea, but to me it sounds safer than metal poles.

We can't accept the idea that since a sport is dangerous, a human mistake can be fatal. NO WAY!!! NO WAY, REALLY.

Safety first. And that track can be improved, if I'm not wrong...

That's a good point, but first we (not me and you) should try to to do our best to make it safer. Covering those poles can be a good start.

I'm late to the conversation :p But Vancouver spent like $30-$40 mill on their ceremony, Beijing spent like $304 mill lol. The Vancouver opening ceremony was alright..The use of projectors was siiick. In the very beginning when he stomped his staff on the ground and a pulse effect came out, that was well done. Overall though, it was more 'meh' to me.

Canada could have used the Circe du Soleil. That would have been a lot nicer than what we saw. I am a musician and I really hated the singers. There was a lot of mediocre music.

I am not Canadian, but my wife is, so I am all for Canada.

Circe du Soleil would have been hella cool..That's what they should've done. To me, the tap dance/fiddle routine went on for a bit too long. After 5 mins I was bored of it.
