    Haha.

Can you even NAME all the TDs on the store yet alone find out how many towers, upgrades and maps there are?

An extremely short-sighted answer that's easy for someone like you to make. I'll concede that I'm still missing a few good games from my list:

    DragonSlaughter
    Zombie Attack
    Game of Da Dead
    INKoming
    Garden War
    iTD
    A Bugs Defense
    Battle Field

and a few others which I'll include in an update sooner or later.

Nope. That's the purpose of an ultimate guide. As a TD fan, I want to know what all of them are and what their relative strengths/weaknesses are. Some exclusion is ok, but you need a better measure than whether it's free or not.

For example, there was a geoDefense clone (who's name I can't remember) that was for-pay, but was poorly implemented. I agree that there's no point in adding that to the list. OTOH, TapDefense is free but is competitive with many of the stronger TDs you have listed. (I'll bet there are quite a few people who would rate it above Beseigement.) Excluding it because it is free is a failing in your list.

My point is, if you want to truly be the ULTIMATE list, you need to be thourough in your coverage. Or just change the name to "PENULTIMATE List of TDs". Most people think Penultimate is like super-ultimate or something, so it won't hurt you one bit. ;) :p

Why would you call it the "Penultimate" guide to anything? Penultimate means "next to the last".

Apparently you are unfamiliar with the definition of "Ultimate"? Ultimate means "last". Penultimate is next to last.

If this was the Ultimate list, no list could ever top it. It would be the "last" word in TD lists. Since it isn't the last word (but rather the next-to-last), it's the Penultimate list.

@Camzy - Told you that people didn't know what penultimate meant. :p

I think you're using the word wrong. :p

You usually use the word penultimate when you're about to finish something. It's used to say I'm "nearly" there or something along those lines.

But, it's not used appropriately here, because the "ultimate" TD guide which is the title refers to a super guide (which I think it accomplishes for all the most popular ones.) There's a difference here because I'm using ultimate in a different way, therefore it doesn't make sense to say that something that is off the "ultimate" is "penultimate."

Sorry for the English lesson, but, on second thought, I do think Tap Defense is worth including, so I'll include it in my next update too.

The New York Times would disagree with you:

    http://anarchiblog.blogspot.com/2005/11/ultimate-usage-of-penultimate.html

You might find the way this article uses the term to also be of interest:

    http://www.librarytechnology.org/ltg-displaytext.pl?RC=10344

Basically, anywhere you use Ultimate, you can use Penultimate. Because at the end of the day, ultimate still means "last" or "end". Penultimate means "next to last" or "just before end". So if there is an "ultimate list", there can also be a "penultimate list". Don't get me started on the "antepenultimate list*"... :p

Trust me, I've done enough professional writing to know this. ;)

No, you're still using ultimate to mean "last". Your ordering is by a perceived value, but it is an ordering nevertheless.

Yay! Now we're cooking with fire!

And getting much closer to the title of "Ultimate". Double yay! :D

    * Ok, fine. If you insist. :p "If this list is not the ultimate list but rather the penultimate list, does that not reduce the next competing list to the position of being the antepenultimate list? "

    Fine then.

But as of now, it is the ULTIMATE TD Guide because I have yet to find one as comprehensive and detailed.

I have to say that you really shouldn't just voice your opinon but critical review as I find that star defense(nothing but a mediocre TD wrapped in 3d graphics) was place to high and fieldrunners placed too low(it may have few maps but it has lots of polish and sound and graphics still match even todays TDs)

Mmm. I get your point. But it's my opinion and rating. I'm not sure how else I should recommend certain games.

    thewiirocks,

Did you even read his post before your responded to it? Do you understand how dumb it makes you look to quote him defining a word and then mocking him for not knowing the definition.

Perhaps I misunderstood (in which case I apologize), but my reading of iPhone's post was that he was seeing "next to last" as in "last in the running". Which doesn't make any sense as that would mean your guide stinks. However, once one understands the meaning of of Ultimate ("last"; used in a context similar to "last word in...") the use of the word Penultimate makes more sense.

Well, one thing is clear -- it cannot be the ultimate guide as long as the font is Comic Sans. Ugh!

    Otherwise, good work!

It still sounds silly though. Let's just cut this "ultimate", "penultimate" stuff. It's a TD guide, and I haven't seen one as good and comprehensive.

First update in nearly a month is up!

The table is now a google doc which has links to the games.

    Awesome update!

...and I expect Bloons Tower Defense to be at the top (or at least on the thing! :) ) when it's out. I'll give you the details of it when I get it if you want it. :)

OK, but I'm reviewing at least 3 other TDs at the moment. Ninja TD, SG Tower Defense (got a promo) and Comets and Craters.

    Camzy,

Can I make a suggestion for your list:

How about adding in placeholders for all of the TD games you haven't looked in yet? Then the top of the chart could be as it is now, and the bottom could be a section with just the name and perhaps the icon to start. Everything else would be blank.

This would have a number of advantages:

    1) It would make the list more comprehensive.
    2) It would give people the impetus to send you the information which was missing which would save you some work.

At some point, you would then have a full list with all the information, with some of the games reviewed by you, and some not reviewed yet. If there were ones you never planned to look at you could say that as well.

This wouldn't be that much work (especially if you called for information) but the end result would be a more useful list.

    What do you think?

By the way, what is "Comets and Craters"? I can't find it in the app store.

    Regards, Michael

    Thanks for the suggestion Michael.

    I quite agree actually.

Comets and Craters is a TD game that will be released soon (google it). The dev requested I include the game on my table.

Hey, Bloons TD is out. I'm writing a review for it now but can quickly give you some good and bad points on it.

    Good:

    -Cartoony Graphics
    -Somehow keeps you addicted
    -Lots of towers
    -two upgrade routes
-lots of maps, medals to keep you occupied
-said maps all need different tactics.
-You can save in the middle of a game
    -no lag
    -unlockables

    Bad:

    -No online features
-Easy and Medium difficulty's can be beaten with same technique.
-at core the same tower defense game (BUT somehow extremely addictive)
-some road blocks (like the pineapple) and some towers (like Boomerang) are obsolete.
    -repetitive audio

There also Navy Patrol that you missed out. Do check it out, I think it deserves a mention.

I kind of like the pineapple. Useful when you don't have enough money to buy the cannon. But I agree that this game is not complete without an online leaderboard. I had a blast playing it, but still, the fun wore out after some time when you only have yourself to compete with.
