Am I the only One who has no idea how to play the game? Even though I played through the tutorials I have no idea on bow to proceed with the actual game. The tutorials only said build this and that without actually mentioning why I need to do that. I understand that in order to build a tool for example I need an iron mine and iron smelter but I also need to build the tools for the workers which in return they need food which in return need a place to process grain and the list goes on.
It gets chaotic pretty fast and I have no idea how to proceed. I feel so dumb!!!

Hahah I caught so much flak for telling that guy about how terrible that game was and how likely it was that he'd never deliver on the promises, and I got flamed for it.

    Who's laughing now?

I'm in the same boat as you are :( the game is so deep and there's so much depth to it that it confuses you. I don't understand how to fully manage my resources, workers, etc.

Finally a good thinking mans game for the AppStore! The depth of this game is what will turn iPhone 'gamers' who are spoiled by mindless gameplay of 90% games out there!

If it makes you guys feel any better, Settlers IS known for being a little overwhelming to newcomers. I had a lot of trouble with this new version, because of all the changes. However I played the tutorial levels again and now I find myself understanding the game better AND having lots of fun with it.

So on the fourth campaign mission, what do you recommend I build/do first? I don't understand the whole tool system and all that, or how to get iron, help?

To build tools, you'll need wood and iron. For wood, a Woodcutter hut will suffice. Iron is more complicated - you'll need to mine the iron ore, then make into iron bars at the Iron Smelter (which will itselt require iron ore AND coal). Then, the wood and the iron bars will be made into tools at the Toolsmith. Click the Toolsmith and the magnifying (sp?) glass to select the tools you wanna build.

I know it sounds complicated but that's the point of the Settlers series: establishing a deep economic and industrial system :) I love it.

If you need any help, don't hesitate in asking.

How can you get your own iPod music to play instead of the ingame music?

after finished most of the tutorial sections, I'm still lose...

way to complex, it's definitely not for casual gamer, the learning curve is huge...and it is not easy to pick up and play, I need to memorize lot of requirement, build that, build this... I just wanna enjoy a game after school/work, not study hard.

if you're the hardcore gamer, go to sit in front of computer, why use idevice as your platform.

Lol yeah same here. I was pretty confident after the tutorial, but then when I was on my own, it was pretty bad. Hopefully I can learn how to play this because it has the potential to be a really fun game, for me at least.

The same reason everyone uses an iPod over a computer... you can't use your computer in school, in bed, on the train, on a plane, etc...

What don't you understand? This is my first encounter with the "Settlers" series as well but everything seems pretty clear and logical to me... build a mine so you can get ores to make tools/weapons, build a sheep farm to supply sheep for a slaughterhouse so you can feed your workers...

I learned to play Settlers when I was 9 or 10 on my dad's Amiga. There was no manual, no tutorial, and the buildings/units/menus weren't even labeled.

So, yeah. You don't really need to "memorize" any requirements for anything because tapping on each building brings up a little notification thingie which tells you what the requirements for the building are.

    Just saying.

Wow, I assumed this thread was filled with praise and then I got a chance to sit down and read it, and most people are slamming it.

To the people that are fans of the early series, like I am, get over it. This is an iPhone game.

To the people that won't buy it without freeplay, did you buy Red Alert? Because this has way more content "out of the box" and at half the price.

To the people that want a vanilla RTS game, this isn't it, and the franchise never has been in the two that I played. It's always been more about economics than about war.

I need to get further into the additional campaigns before truly assessing the title, but I can tell you that the general views in this thread do not coincide with the actual game, IMO.

I'm an old school Settlers fan who did most of the slamming and, after spending some quality time with an open mind trying to appreciate the game for what it is, I can tell you it is currently my favorite iPhone game.

I'm very glad I gave it a second chance, and so should all of you! :)

    Slaving peon.
Not here; not there; not anywhere!
Obviously not everybody is dead-set against this game as it is slowly climbig the US chart: up to #81 right now.

It's a very good game in its own right, and Gameloft has done a terrific job with this port. There's no need to keep clinging to bygones.

#81? Wow, it is #1 in Germany. And BTW: Crazy Chicken Deluxe (Moorhuhn Deluxe) - the game that is totally ignored here at Touch Arcade - is #2 in Germany.

    OMFG The Settlers!!!! Yay! :D

Thanks for the review Big Albie - I think it'll tip me over the edge to obtaining this little blast-from-the-Amiga-past gem!
