I've never ever met someone who liked the current versions better then the old ones Settlers is to Ubisoft what Sonic is to Sega - they keep ****ing it up and completely ignoring what the fans want
*hands everyone a glass of wine* Oh well, let's have a toast to them getting the next release more in line with what the fans want.
So is it "Settlers IV"? The PC version announced to be released for Spring 2010 will be "Settlers VII". Why did the chose to bring "Settlers IV" to the iPhone?
I'm a kind of old-timer, I like The Settlers 1/Serf City the most... Settlers II was a bit "cluttered" to me, while Settlers III was another kind of a game - because of this RTS part where you directly order your troops, and you can't build any "roads". The Settlers IV (iPhone's port is Settlers 4 port, NOT Settlers 3) is a bit expanded version of Settlers 3. While I love original Settlers' concept the most (to build all those flags, roads and buildings, managing economy, while only marginally thinking about military and not thinking about RTS at all), I enjoyed Settlers 3 and 4 too. I think I will enjoy iPhone's version, however we can only dream about port of The Settlers 1 And why there is no The Settlers 1 port? Because who will enjoy Amiga game today? I bet those will be not reviewers and not ones under certain age And I think that's why it is a Settlers 4 port, and not say 3 (not to mention 2 or 1) - because The Settlers 4 had the best graphics and it is the last REAL "Settlers" game in the series...
I think Settlers 2 is generally the favourite according to abit of googling, Although the first one i played was 3, so that will always be in my heart! This one looks so good, cant wait to get home from work and download it! Any news if it works just as well on the 3g as the 3gs?
"It's a Big Name game that is 100x better than it's $30 NDS counterpart, and for $5 you will still wait for the price drop? The appstore consumer never fails to amaze me" you have to understand the the appstore costumer has also experienced way too many times a buying spree, when they bought games as soon as they were released, spent say 50$ on them, and find out a few days after that they went on sale and now they could buy them for 5$. It's not a pleasant feeling. It's not the costum itunes shopper who is a hypocrite. It's the simple dynamic of the AppStore market that makes us prefer to wait 2 months to buy a game than buy it now for a price 4$ higher.
What made you enjoy the game? I want to know because I stopped playing after the 3rd mission. Is there a redeeming factor for this game ( Red Alert). I'm sorry to go off topic.
"The Settlers" is originally made in Germany, especially the first 3 parts "The Settlers" and "The Settlers 2" which I think are the best ones! My absolute favorite is part 2 Since Ubisoft bought the German franchise, "The Settlers" lost it's unique gameplay and became a typical mundane strategy game like hundreds of other strategy games. I'm glad the iPhone Settlers adopted the old gameplay, and the missing endless mode just opens a market gap for me as an indie iPhone developer and Settlers-player-since-it's-first-part!
can someone tell me how much is on this game? because the app description fails to mention it... i mean how long is the campaign etc.
Despite all the ranting above (by myself) I did buy the game and been playing tutorial levels for a while now. Couple of bugs I've encountered so far; - there is no autolock disable function built in, so your device will go to sleep when waiting buildings to be built without fiddling with the screen. - at this point, i-device autolocking itself and you waking it back up, the game forgets your sound settings. In particular it starts playing the music again, you need to go to the sound options and back to cure this issue. I won't give any opinions about the gameplay itself just yet, since the tutorial will not let me play the game fully. Hopefully the rest of the game, being mission based, isn't constraining the player with the choices.
Is it worth getting the game? How well does it run on an iphone 3g? I don't want to buy a game then won't be able to play it due to lag.
I have a question. On the Roman campaign, mission 3, we learn to build a migration cart (which is an awesome feature, actually). On mission 4 I tried again - I built the cart, filled it with the necessary goods, and sent it out. I sent it, settled it, and started to assign constructions, but my guys seem to refuse to pick up the hammers and start building. What gives...?
It seems to me this game is only getting the thumbs down from Settlers vets, so what about the folk who haven't played the PC games? We'll have nothing to compare it too so missing or changing features shouldn't bother us... how does it stand when judged on it's own merits? Also, how's the performance on 2G devices and up?
So i am looking to buy this game and have never played the settlers games before. Is there anyone who has bought the game that is new to the franchise.
I'm thinking about it but someone needs to answer my question first. Also just noticed my sister has Settlers IV on PC so maybe I'll just play that...
Damn...can't install it on my iTouch While installing the app the progress bar gets to about 70% and it stops It has now been stuck for ~20 minutes... I tried re-downloading the app and it didn't help. Jailbroken iTouch 1G, OS 3.1.1
I'm not really new to the franchise, but I'm of the impression that some of my fellow vets think a bit too negatively of this title. Actually, for one reason or another, I've never had a brush with Settlers after the second game, so the changes brought on in part 3 and 4 are completely new to me. Actually, I like a lot of the changes that have been made here. While I'll always still enjoy the first two, they have some certain limitations that have been done away with here. It's nice not having to worry about path placement: it gives one a lot more freedom of how to build and instead of only one (or two) items at a time all freely available villagers will grab the resources needed and bring it to the construction site. It definitely reduces some of the draggingly slow downtimes that are present in the originals. The fast forward greatly adds to that as well. Yes, it's nice watching your builders constructing buildings, but it really takes a bit long at times, so it is good to skip a bit ahead. A very good feature to have for this platform. Also, since there is no central resource center present (only a fort instead) resources stay at the buildings where they're produced, you can easily design your settlement in such a fashion that wood, grain, coal, etc finds its way to the proper worker the fastest way possible. It sure beats going first to the resource building and back again. Having a little more direct control over the settlers is also a big plus in my book. I always thought that building a path just to send out a geologist or scout was a bit silly. It's much simpler and faster to directly send him to the area you want. I can also imagine it's also easier to respond to threats, where in the original you were basically screwed when the opponent had the upper hand in the fight as it did take a while to get a soldier back out there again. That said, even though the military aspect seems to play a bigger part now building up a functional economic infrastructure is still the main focus of the game. I love the look and feel of the game. The world is very colorful and because of all the minor animations it does feel very much alive. Leaving a dirt path behind of a much travelled route is a nice touch. The game sure loads and saves very quickly, and runs perfectly smooth on my 2G Touch. The interface is very intuitive. While the gameplay mechanics may be slightly intimidating to newcomers, the Roman campaign, all of which seems to be the tutorial, appears to do a fine job of easing you into getting familiar with how to get things done - it certainly is helping me getting familiarized with the changes. Sure, it would have been nice to have a freeplay mode, but for five bucks this is still a terrific value! In fact, I can see this becoming one of my new favorites. I think people are just too stuck on the notion that everything old is good. Yet I wouldn't mind seeing the original Settlers make an appearance as well if this title will do well enough.
