Now you did it... Thanks a bunch... Reading this thread made me just download and try the pc demo - a few minutes later I bought The Quest from appstore. To (mis)quote Harlan Ellison "I have no time and I must play" I just had to support the devs here, you've created an excellent game and hope you'll find financial success with it!
Since we are talking about Bogar's quest .... When I talk to his wife, she doesn't want to leave and the only dialog option I have is something like "Alright, I can't take you by force". Next to the building the wife is in, is the building I assume the bandit leader is in. When I talk to him, he tells me I'm not wanted around there and to go away. When I speak to Bogar, he keeps asking me if I found his wife. How do I trigger the rest of the quest?
Question for Redshift/Sylon Hi Sylon, I'm almost finished with The Quest iPhone version (about 10 quests left) and was wondering, do I need to obtain the software on my Pocket PC and add expansions to play further or are you going to release expansions for the iPhone? The Quest is by far my most played game. Despite the somewhat older graphics the gameplay far makes up for it.
Danoth The all the magic barriers in the game are removable by some trigger, like a button on the wall, touching a *hint for later* item on the wall that isn't a button works too like lamps, art...etc...it's never invisible. In this case the thing which opens it is accepting a quest by the NPC inside, the Shaman. If you kill him first which is what I did my first time through you will obviously lose your chance to do his quest and never see that lower dungeon. :x Illysidyl About the kidnapped wife: It sounds like you did the right thing, there should be some option when talking to him about the wife, is it only giving you one possible option to respond to the Lord ("Going..." I think?)? I can't remember if there were multiple options after reporting back to him. I remember being stuck too for a short time. There should be a response that triggers him to say that she loves her rum and she will follow you home if you get her drunk. Try talking to them in reverse order, or going to the robber at night. It must be some small thing if it's not in the dialogue.
Acariel: thanks for the support you give here to other players. : ) BTW, speaking about my 'massive amounts of dialogue', of course I couldn't do that on my own, we had the 4th member in our team (Catacomber, a longtime US-resident fan of our games) who wrote many sidequests and corrected my text. As for the program language for the games - I absolutely don't know, I'm totally stupid for programming... I'm the 'everything except programming' person in the team. : ) Diggity Dan: thanks, we always try to do our best. : ) cptlockheed: thanks for the support - have fun! ponyboy: yes, you should keep your expansion packs on your PPC, because for the iPhone we'll release only a few of them. Probably we'll release totally new ones too, if we'll make some more, but the authors of some already existing non-official expansions stated that they doesn't want to port their packs to this market.
My only worry about this game is the graphics. I want a fluid, seemless game and these graphics look terrible(at least in 1.0). I know it is supposed to be retro but i am not really into that. Can some one post a gameplay video of the newest version showing off the graphics and gameplay? Thanks
Xgamer The update was not really for graphics, just the control style--which you can choose between a couple types now. The game is already basically optimized for the iPhone's abilities such as framerate etc. The phone is not an Xbox. 2D sprites allow for more detail, and Apple has its own set of limitations on the compressed sizes of Apps; thus games can only be so large/complicated. You can have a game like this with sprites and 30+hrs play time (@6$ :x) to finish just one race/alignment, or you can have orcs made of like 120 polygon faces (which is not many to say the least :x), but sadly fancy 3D games are too much for the phone, the game size is too big for Apple. That's why some of the really neat *looking* games, like Nanosaur 2, are so short (not to mention the phone can barely handle many polygons and environmental factors, and you get the choppiness you are worried about). Here is a somewhat crappy resolution video of the game (YouTube of course!), it moves at 90 degree angles and you can strafe as you can see. The YouTube isn't as sharp as the real thing but you get an idea of the motion which I think is what you wanted most? It is very smooth to move, except rarely when it's raining/thundering and many monsters are around it might get slightly choppy. This is actual game music too but altered a bit, the music is quite nice. Hope this helps you decide and not regret your spending later. Edit: oops, forgot to post the video lol. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0KMay1T5sA&fmt=18 Sylon Sorry lol, I don't mean to respond and take over your job, I'm just off work today and all the quests are so fresh in my mind, and I loved the game so much I am replying out of fun.
is there lots of replayability? and can the warrior class (whichever one has the highest strength or attack) use attack magic?
I guess I'm stumped. Lord Bogar gives me one option: "About your Wife" When I click that, he tells me to visit the southeastern forest and my only option is "All right, going". When I go back to the hideout, there is no change in the dialog options. I camped out and tried talking to who I think is the bandit leader again, but he doesn't give me any options. Thanks for your help though!
Question I've found the abandoned mine. It's got a lot of ghouls, ancient ghouls, skeletons, bats, poisoned ground, etc in it. And those lovely ghouls keep infecting me with the plague and stealing XP from me... Before I finish clearing it out I'd like to know if the abandoned mine is related to a quest? Should I wait until I have a quest to completely clear it out? I'd hate to fully clear it out and deny myself a quest and reward at a later part of the game.
I think you need to find the cave/hole in the ground/dungeon that is in the square right below the square that the wife is in. IDR the names, but keep on going south and there will be a cave with a robber standing outside of it. If you talk to him then he tells you to check out the cave and when ur done talk to the leader to get ur reward. When i talked to the leader he told me to go get the ransom from the chicks husband. so thats how i got the quest to continue. Idk if that helps u at all.
Finally done! Question, Bugs? Hi Sylon and everybody else in this forum! Yesterday i finally finished "The Quest", my wife was already complaining about me, because i could not stop playing this. This is a great RPG, thanks for creating such a big world of characters, quests, plants, monsters, cities, lakes, forests, etc.! Just some comments: Two times i had a message stating some kind of "Script Error!", first when receiving a quest from the Mysterious Man (I think it was after finishing the thieves giuld quest), and then after killing the ugly undead monster in the Pit of Hell at the ending of the game. And there was this strange thing (maybe a bug?) with the Leader of the Mage Council on the Wasteland island. It was impossible the make any kind of damage to him (weapons, magic, wands), so i ran into the Gate. On the other side (the other dimension) i met him again and it was possible to kill him. Then, when i returned to go back to the dark castle, there he was again alive and still invulnerable. I managed to get to the castle and finished the game. (Perhaps that "undead" Leader of the Mage Council is still sneaking around the Wasteland? ) Has this happened to others? And finally the big question: Will there be any Expansion packs for the iPhone version? (Good for me and bad for my social life )
I never ran across any quest for it; just explored it for exploration's sake (well, that and for loot's sake).
Yup. In my opinion, there is a ton of replayability. The game is just downright huge and you have the option of working through it with the different classes and races. It is fun. As for the magic using fighting type, yes you should be able to. I've got a character in game that uses a combination of fighting skills and healing. No reason you can't create one that uses fighting and attack magic. To the devs: This is awesome! I've been a longtime fan of this series of games and had played Legacy on the Zodiac and had been hooked. I'd been looking for this sort of game for the longest while since getting an iPhone and I must say that I'm extremely happy with it. You've come a long way from the Bard's Tale / Wizardryesque interface. The look of The Quest combined with the new control interface make this a joy to play. Love it. Keep up the great work!
I can tell you that Sylon told me yesterday that we have to wait 1 to 2 months before they release an expansion for The Quest. I'm just about finished with the game--before I do I'm ensuring I solved all quests from the list here: http://thequesthints.de/inhalt.php
Mhans Oooh, you know that's probably it. I remember not knowing what to do so I'd just moved on to the Forest of Blood and did that then returned and talked to the Leader and suddenly he'd talk to me and I got to say something like "So'n'so sent me" which was the dude outside the Dungeon of Blood. That's the missing piece! Nienor Yea they really do care. There's this whole retarded politic behind Apple's App Store policies, it literally drives away good developers because it's too hard to make big games; putting up big money to make a nice game is too risky when people are only willing to pay 99 cents for a game that entertains them for 20 hours. This makes it a situation of: do I invest a few 100k$ to make a big game at the chance of having a few bad opening day reviews that essentially kill the sales, or do I risk it and hope my idea is good enough to sell 100000+ copies at 99 cents...plus the 10% Apple takes? Not to mention, Apple has caps on the size of the app, also a problem. And the final thing (relating to your comment xD) is that it's not allowed to charge for updates. So when a company invests a huge amount of time in a game that ends up not doing well because of crappy policies and demands on them (...and bad reviews based on ridiculous expectations of cost:benefit of the app...), devs end up really not too interested in fixing small bugs---the bad reviews kill the game and it's not really salvagable from then on, so why bother spending even more money on a wasted venture to add more content, let alone just fix bugs. And yea total re-playability. Not just to try new jobs, but for the sake of the quests and your alignment. Many of the quests (like the Lord's treasure/inheritance) have like up to 8 possible endings, not to mention the world is a VERY different place if you let the evil demons rule it. And you will find you never got every single possible quest the first time through, it's just not possible! Some you have to be evil to even get > Why would some evil dude ask goodie-two-shoes to help him out afterall xD.
xoconoxtle: thanks for those script error problems, we'll check them out! The Leader of the Mage Council should disappear from the island, I think, and appear on the other place. Hm... snow mani: I think there is no special quest related to that mine, that map is mostly just for fun. : ) farnsworthiness: thanks! Acariel: Apple takes 30%, not 10... We'll see where this whole iPhone gaming platform goes within 1-2 years but right now it's not an ideal place for serious game development. But in spite of that we're happy because it's still a better place than the dying (or already dead) old PDA market. BTW, answering your earlier technical questions, our programmer just said that the game was written mostly in C++, and only 1% of it is in Objective-C. Also The Quest doesn't use iPhone's 3D acceleration.
Great! That's good to know. I'll go back in and let those Ancient Ghouls kick my butt again... umm... I mean I'll go back into the mine and have some fun!
Well, okay, it's not just for fun, you can get some very cool stuff (useful mostly if you're evil) and read some nice skill/spellbooks there too. So it's for getting stuff and experience in a horroristic place. : ) A great place for character development.
