I haven't played as a mage yet. So I can't offer advice but a poster called writingsama (sp?) did. And they posted their advice and screenshots earlier in this now very large thread. Go to the top of the screen and select an option called "Search this Thread". Search by mage. That should help you a bit.

THE QUEST - new features in the Update

    Incase anyone is wondering -- here is the complete list of changes ;

    - New control scheme: Virtual direction pad. Can be set in the "Settings" menu. Usage: just hold your finger anywhere on the main game screen and the dpad will pop up shortly. More information is in the updated Manual and in-game help text.

    - When in the new control mode, the on-screen controls have been rearranged for easier handling and more information. Also the 3D view is slightly larger in portrait mode.

    - The controls now can be put on the left side in landscape mode or mirrored in portrait mode, independently from the control scheme.

    - The quest logs are more detailed, making easier to find out what to do.

    - When starting a new game, there are fewer monsters in the starting areas, making life easier for beginners. The remaining monsters give more xp to balance things out.

    - The map scroll has been tweaked slightly, so that the name of maps are not truncated in portrait mode.

If you haven't already bought it -- grab THE QUEST now -- the best 3D RPG for iPhone.

Thanks for the complete list of improvements and changes in the update.

I'll second your statement that The Quest is the best 3D RPG for the iPhone/iPod Touch. I highly recommend it to everyone. It's fantastic value and a lot of good fun. I've spent hours playing so far and I'm only a fraction of the way through. If you don't already have it you should buy it now!

Speaking to an ending with limited resources...

I was very lucky; just before the ending I spent 30 minutes and made about 90 full restore mana potions (mage here) because I was sick of doing it too frequently

    lol

So, am finally grabbing this. And am seeking some character advice. I am thinking about a tank-mage, who'd become ever more reliant on magic during the game. Pure mages tend to be rather tedious early on, in my experience of similar RPGs. Anyway, I am thinking:

Etherim, all level-up attribute points going to up Int.

    Light Armor,

Light Weapon, or should I take Accuracy, for which the race has bonus points? It doesn't work in melee range, though, right? Will the Burning Hands spell carry me through melee combat?

Alchemy - can't be buying all those mana restoration potions that I'll need.

Attack Magic - need some way to damage stuff after Dex and Str fall behind

Environmental - need all the awesome utility spells and...

which to pick, Protection or Healing magic? Which is it more annoying to be without, given that I'd have Alchemy and my initial mana reserves would be small?

    TIA.

i just wanted to thank you dev guys for this game.....i was a huge fan of all these old dungeon crawlers like dungeon master, eye of the beholder and black crypt.

while dungeon master is (and will be forever) certainly on the top of the list due to its perfect spellcasting, the quest is not far behind these titles. very entertaining and for sure the best purchase so far in the app store.

im already looking forward to replay with a fighter and/or an undead character.

btw....something for the mages: use wands, especially in the beginning and try to get the recharge wand spell as soon as possible and when you have enough mana to cast it of course. helps alot against dwarves and orcs.

one thing i don't like about mages is that with increasing attack magic skill the low-lvl spells like "burning hand" get very efficient while all the fancy spells like lightning storm etc are practically useless due to their high mana consumption.

Thanks for the long, detailed, heart-warming post, it was a pleasure to read. : )
Don't care about the 'insulting' comments or quick reviews, when you release something in public it comes with it too, I don't really care them either.

To go a little behind the scenes: it's interesting what you wrote about working on something so long you might not even get a real return on. It's a big challenge for the little companies in the game-making world. For example we made our previous game, Legacy, within 6 months, with only 2 members in the team - and we got much more positive response (and of course more income) back in 2004. It was fun to make that game, it was much easier, even if it was a party-based RPG, and it's still a complex game compared to the usual little casual games. Then we thought about making something more, something bigger, much more complex, realistic, advanced etc. - and we spent much more time to make a new game even when one of the main members had serious financial problems so I had to persuade him from time to time to continue the work because once it will be released he'll be OK too. Well, real life is different. : ) When The Quest was released back in 2006 it had a much less success than Legacy had, so the other founder of our team had to quit. Now here we are, with a new programmer, and it's still a question that it's worth to make serious games like this or not. We'll see. : )
BTW, one of the main advantages of The Quest that it has an 'open' engine with a very complex editor, which means if you have the editor you can not just make new maps for the already expandable game but you can modify everything in the game, even the spells' attributes or animation, the introduction scenes or text, all the graphics, all the sounds, etc. - it's like making a totally new RPG. Currently we can't take advantage of this function on the iPhone market, but probably with time it will change. Right now if we'll be able to release some expansion packs for the game, we'll be happy too.

Responding to people on the forum or answering all the emails/messages is natural, I think. The only problem is that we must write in a foreign language.
About the 'easter egg': uh, I'm not that scary, don't worry about that! : ) It's a slightly modified picture. I'm not sure how many people knows about this secret in the game, but we've always had surprises like this.
And sorry for the 'gloomy' world! : ) I think the graphics has a little childish touch sometimes so at least it looks not that gloomy, but yes, we have some 'realistic' dialogues...

    Answering your questions:
1.) I simply don't remember whether we made some sidequests for the coins or not... But if not, I'm sure one of the expansions has some quests, just to use them somehow.
2.) Ugh, sorry, again you would need somebody who is very active now with playing The Quest, because I simply can't remember the exact details for all possible little sidequests. I THINK there is no more quests related to that Cult Leader. But I'm not sure - sometimes a new quest appears only if you have an exact race, or fame, etc.
3.) You'll never meet with the Governor personally. It's by design - simply the game was not made in that way.
4.) You can enter in the 'second to right' room in the crypt of Mithria through a Teleport. So don't try to find a key for that door... Try to find a teleport in the empire of the Witch Queen. : )
5.) As for the Other Dimension, there are several areas on that map which are accesible through different portals all around the world. I can count at least 4-5 different spots where you can enter. I think what you can see is again an area where you can enter from the Shaman's room in the Dungeon of Blood. Of course there is nothing serious there, just some new horroristic areas to scare you. : )

Alchemy is something all can afford to level up, even as a melee you will get enough INT to get your alchemy high enough to make great mana and healing potions and the important magic resist. I cannot stress enough, magic resist is why you level alchemy; read the books, they are cheap, and your alchemy should never be really low enough to level up by buying from the NPC, but if it is do that too. I was an archer, and added alchemy skill every time I leveled up. You don't need to level up prot magic if you use alchemy. Your magic resist spell will never be as good as the potion, plus with alchemy you get your free mana and health potions from junk you collect on the way. I only ever had to buy a few misc. herbs towards the end, maybe 20 or so in the whole game! and not one single potion of any type. I was literally invincible in the end bosses, and for the hard mobs you encounter towards the end, <3 magic resist potion.

Don't fuss about magic attack too much, you will own them with magic, even without leveling it at all I could do decent damage (for fun, I didn't need to use it as an archer Etherim, but since they can learn it I tried it sometimes for fun). You will mostly use wands anyways, and recharge them yourself, so don't worry too much about the terrible mana costs, you will have your home-made potions and wands you can recharge yourself :)

All your weapons are light as a mage, so level that, you will not really need accuracy, it's not needed at all, especially at low levels, and later you will be using magic. Level light and heavy armor evenly, the ultimate armors, shields and hats are all heavy :p Though as Sylon said some more useful light armors in the expansion, enchanting is awesome but you still end up using some heavy armor too, like shield, body and head, so I recommend leveling both.

snow mani: no, there is no way to 'lock' the d-pad on the screen. We can make it of course if there will be a real need for this - time will answer this question.

Isilel: I'm glad you finally decided like this. : )
Alchemy is a VERY useful skill for a mage - a must have. Light Armor is a wise decision too - there will be some very good light armors in the game (and its expansion) which are not that strong in AC like the usual heavy armors BUT they're much more enchantable.
From protection and heal magic, I would choose the heal one, but this is only my choice... I'm not that experienced in this because I always played with the game with a very bad guy like a thief or an undead. : )

Thank you for reading my post!!! My hubby is a perl engineer but currently he's just finished reading some massive Objective C book and wants to develop for the iPhone. We were wondering what language you had to translate from for the iPhone port? I was raving about your game so much to him he was very interested in the politics of the App Store. I am sorry your friend had to move on after The Quest... I wish people understood that developing on yours own (as opposed to being in a bigger company like my hubby which is safer and guaranteed salary) is like farming...except scarier, you can't always control the markets, publicity, and it takes much more time to make your product---the world can be very different than the one you made the game for when you started. If you cannot port the expansion to the iPhone I will buy it for my PC :) I MUST have more Freymore! Though I will lose my Acariel archer *sniff* and have to play again, what a chore! *sarcasm*

Thank you for the tips, I know I failed the Dungeon of Blood Quest as I killed the Shaman right away lol. On my next try through I will try to figure out the spots on the Other Dimension map. YES now that makes sense why that room in the crypt is not gray, I must have been there already from the Queen's lair. Duh!~ Huh, I bet I never found a Cult related quest because you might have to be evil, I was a super famous goodie-two-shoes. Now I can sleep easy!

Hahah---SLIGHTLY altered picture? Those things are horrifying!!! Just like all the undeads. You guys are funny.Your small talking icon is more accurate for sure :p I know that it is realistic dialogue, I was just making a cute comment, I like it the way it is, but it's still fun to poke fun at the fact that it seems like 80% of the females are cheating, materialistic, shallow, dress-loving etc etc and the men are 80% drunken, whore visiting, jerks.

It's so impressive you speak english so well and write massive amounts of dialogue for games in your 2nd language!

I'm really having a lot of fun with the new controls, but I should be honest and say that between work and personal time I've not been able to get very far in the Quest just do to not having the time. If I had more time, I would definitely be playing this much much more, however last night before I went to bed I turned it on and goofed about for a while finding a quest that seems to be bugged for me. I'll explain...

When you talk to the leader of the bandits (who's keeping Lord Bogar's wife "hostage") you need to go back to town and collect the 2000g as a ransom. I went to see Bogar and he of course gives me the option to side with him, and get his wife back, promising me reward as well. While the quest dialogue was open I accidentally hit the home button putting me back to the springboard. When I opened the game back up I was just outside Bogar's front door (across from the Mayor). I went back into Bogar's place but he's no longer active on the quest, he simply says "Greetings stranger." with the only option for reply being "Goodbye" but no information about the quest, his wife, or the ransom. Thinking that perhaps the game auto-chose for me (one of the two options in his dialogue) I went back to the leader of the bandits who seemingly continued the quest by discussing Bogar with me, me having the option to say "No, he really wants his wife back" or something of the like. The leader of the bandits says he'll not only give me part of the cash ransom, but a "special" bonus gift if I side with him, leading me back to Bogar's house. Of course I expected Bogar to either pay up, or give me incentive to take his side, however when I get back to Bogar he's still stuck on the simple dialogue "Greetings stranger." with no discussion of the active quest.

This basically leads me to ask, is this fixable, because I don't have a save game to load before this happened. If it's not, and the quest is simply just bugged out I should ask, is this quest part of a larger quest chain, necessary for further quests that are important to the game's progression, or even better asked is this quest in any way important? If it's simply a reward quest that ends here, and these two characters play little to no part in my path from this quest, I can just ignore it and move on, I'd just hate to see someone down the road say "now that you're friends with Bogar, get him to give you this..." or "if you're in league with the bandit leader, have him send you this..." and I wouldn't be able to continue later quests because of this Bogar/Bandit quest.

Has anyone else run into anything like this before/is there something I should do?

Edit: What would be a really nice option for things like this, would be to have the option to abandon a quest. If that was possible, I could abandon this quest and simply start all over. I don't believe I can, unless I've totally missed an option where it's possible, in which case I'm an idiot.

I think abandoning quests to start over would retract from the "reality" of the game. You can't do it in real life. As for the save issue, all I can say is you must save often. Particularily when starting new quests. Sometimes it's 100% unclear which solution you want to go with, later on you will see some quests with more than 2 endings, and various rewards and such. In this case there is only a "good" and "evil" solution. Help the bandit and demand the full ransom and get your fame decreased, but better material rewards. Help the man and force his wife back and get fame and lesser material rewards. The save thing works very well, even in combat it usually remembers the turn you were on. However, some interupts like calls and home-buttons take you back to a few mins prior and you lose some work. I've never seen a quest ruined by an instance like this but it looks like that quest is not solvable for you if you don't have a previous file saved. On the plus, the fame you missed out on not solving it is not a problem in the big scheme of the game, and no he is not related to any other quests. You are correct, if you go back to him after the bandit and tell him the bandits offer, there is another solution offered, no counter offer of money, but after trying to bring his wife back and failing he gives you some rum to bring her home. A lot of the dialogue and motives are a bit dark in the game. His rationale is that she is a drunk and they are a young couple so give her the rum and she'll follow you anywhere. Which is what happens. Later when you talk to him after collecting 2000 gold and the fame, he says that he is so happy she's home, "we're a young couple and have our troubles like any other" or something like that. The bandit would have given you 2000 gold and a decent bow but not as nice as the one you get from the Amazon cave which you do around that same time; which won't even matter if you aren't a ranger, it's just a bit more money from selling it.

    Hope that helps.

That definitely helps, I'm glad to know that this quest isn't very important in the grand scheme of things. In reality, I think my problem is that I save too often, and a bit too impulsively. I really didn't think twice when the quest bugged out initially, I thought "ok, go see the bandit again" (after I got kicked from the game). When I saw the bandit and he seemed to continue the quest, I saved right then and there, thinking "this could have 2 outcomes, and I would rather have fame than an item (I've got the amazon bow, and I'm a priest, so it's good to know the bow is the prize). When I got back to Bogar and he was still bugged, I thought "uh oh, and I just saved too, what an idiot..." so it seems I'm totally stuck on this one.

It's fine however, I've managed to just clear the pit of blood this morning at work and get the Shaman those 3 skulls he wanted, so now I'm off to see what's next in line.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

Stuck in the Dungeon of Blood

    Hi All,

Went down the hole in Robber Forest and entered the Dungeon of Blood (or so it says when I save the game).

I have come to a shimmering, red, sparkly curtain that is between me and a nice stairwell going deeper into the dungeon.

Can anyone tell me how to get past the shimmering curtain?

    Thanks!

    Danoth

Also, other than a list of quests and a text/map, does anyone know if there is a walkthrough manual for Quest?
