And get thumb cramps by keeping the thumb all the time because a touch screen is not comfy like a physical pad? No thanks I can play Super Crate Box and other platformers just fine with a fixed Dpad which is more adequate to me. Nice that it works well for you, just remember people are different blah blah blah.
You don't have to keep it held down ALL of the time, but it's a platformer... you're going to be using the directional controls a lot. There's a ratio involved here. Just remember, I wasn't the one who started with the whole "d-pad is retarded!" thing, it's you who apparently has crippled thumbs.
On the other hand not everyone goes through 10-12 pages of a thread checking if their post was answered. I'm still surprised their testers didnt seem to suggest this in the first place, its not like one or two people here have mentioned it. To be fair we see this issue a fair few times ! Anyway great news about the update, hopefully will appear soon
Indeed Midian! - It's rock sold, the d-pad works perfectly, unlike other games you can comfortably sit your thumb on the screen without moving the character... Just beautiful really. Best release of the week - if not months! planck
I used to beta test and it has happened before that I mentioned problems that were game breaking and the devs apparently figured it must be that I sucked at the game. And then the game came out, and many people in the thread mentioned the exact same problem. Such a shame. I can imagine that people give a game more of a chance during a beta and this might be a game where it really does work if you do. The way the app store works though, there are so many great games, and I recognize the tendency to give up much earlier than I would with a $30 console game. I am looking forward to iCade support!
Man, that floating d-pad sux. Awesome pixel art and platform mechanics so far, but i can't handle that d-pad in this state cuz i am always dying because of the non-precise controls. Seriously, a floating d-pad isn't that good in a platformer.
But i am stunned when still devs dont offer alternative control schemes, out come their game and they're adamant that their new fangled control scheme will work and it bombs and they have to add another one. I know i'm not a programmer but surely devs should offer alternative control schemes to make the 'tilt' brigade happy, the old skool touch buttons people happy etc and also allow positioning of the buttons (to make ipad fans happy). To me thats so important to spend time on that as if you dont bother you may have stunning graphics/sound but if the controls suck then it affects the whole game. Again fair play to them for trying to quickly add an update but we do see this time and time again
Fair point On to the positives. Think the game looks great, the transition between the menus/game is great, looks very professional with the loading animation. The main graphics are great, remind me of 8 bit graphics crossed with 16 bit. Animations are very good, trying to discover new areas is great (like i say when i fell down one of the tubes into the water and saw all the cans i could get that was great!). Think this will be one of my favourite platformers (i've got a lot !) and i'll be playing it so much more in hopefully a week or so. By the way love the music/sound in the game
I never said the pad is retarded, just that I don't like holding it all the time in any game I play. I was also not the only one to say it gives me thumb cramps. I even said I can play the game if I hold my thumb all the time, but (guess ill have to say again) people are different and like different stuff. You can use that for various things in life, in fact, so don't ever forget it Stop making things up and if you wanna be a stupid troll, do it quoting people who wrote such stuff. It's not like I'm doing a crusade against the current control scheme, they said they'll keep it but I guess you can't read well. Lol, it's a very anticipated game so we wanted the perfect experience from day one. Anyway game is awesome in all levels, I just hope it's not too short like it has been said since I won't play this a lot till the next update
After reading this whole thread part of me feels that this is all a long con where the devs are trying to make people buy the game by coming up with this radical and dangerous new control concept. And... It is working, the only reason I am even interested in the game is the description of a new way of trying to make a touchscreen d-pad. I mean, it has to be a better d-pad than anything on a microsoft controller, right? I am also a little disturbed after reading about six different threads tonight that everyone wants to praise the lack of IAP for *everything* that comes out now. Like Badland, everyone is bowing down and groveling about the lack of IAP... Um, this shouldn't be necessary. If Fours4ken has taught us anything IAP can be done RIGHT. IAP shouldn't be a curse, it should be something that can make developers quit their day jobs when done right. Anyway, enough about all that, is this is a good GAME?
This floating dpad sucks ass. I can't control the character because the dpad is always moving around. And no I dont want to keep my thumb held down the whole time. They should have given us a static dpad option. I've played many games with floating dpads that work way better than this game. Horrible controls IMO.
They're adding a static D-pad. But if you ask me, they tried to make it like a physical controller, but simply forgot that a touch screen is nowhere as comfortable to lay your fingers on as a PS3 analog stick....
The game is certainly OK, but yeah...that moving D-pad is a bit of a deal breaker right now. I'm constantly falling off of platforms because it keeps moving. I don't understand why a static D-pad wasn't added in the first place...especially considering how long this was in development. Seems like a great game, which is why it's sad that this is hampering the experience.
Here is where I fall on the Great Controls Debate: The reason so many people prefer static buttons to the slide around-y controls of this game is that the touchscreen itself IS the tactile feedback. Especially jumping, climbing platformers like this (you know, ones with actual platforms) stopping can be just as important as moving. The benefit of a static d-pad is that when you lift your finger off, you stop. Easy. You can physically feel that. However, with these controls, the idea is to slide or rock your thumb back to a middle position if you want to stop, and you don't get nearly the same tactile feedback that way. How far do you slide? You have to wait and see how long it takes for the character on screen to react to know. Anyway, I've only played for about 15 minutes so I can't say definitively that the controls are good or bad. The fact that these devs put so much time, effort, and thought into trying something a little new with the controls is easily worth a buck in my opinion. I'm going to put more time into this and hope I learn to use them better.
Morning update - Earlier in this thread the dev did mention they were updating the controls so there was an option to make them static. So posts like the above (deleted) which was totally OTT about the controls, please CALM down , its only a game. Yes its frustrating after looking forward to this for so long many people werent keen on the controls but hats off to the dev for adding this new feature in an update soon. So just be a bit patient
This. Fantastic game a definite must buy. I actually prefer the controls as they are, it took a little getting used to at first but I adapted and the game worked the rest. I agree that an additional option for controls should be added but the developer has been so responsive to feedback that I'm sure with a bit of patience it will come soon. This game is visually stunning and full of wit and charm that you don't often see in games these days (apart from the very best). Glad there are no hidden IAPs which makes this a total steal at its current price. The music and look and feel (not to mention difficulty!) definitely takes me back to those older games of my childhood like earthworm jim. Top job by the developers, I look forward to any future updates. Now excuse me, I'm going to go play some more!
