20 times per day? Yeah, I'd agree with that. The update was submitted on Saturday the 6th, if it goes by business days then the 6th day would be Monday. I did a little googling and ended up at an app dev site which mentioned 7 days as the norm and up to 10 days. Whatever happens, I picked up Gemini Rue and plan to play that this weekend. I was a bit hyped this morning to see another update hit but it was for Slime Quest because they added some GC Achievements.
I installed this on my old 4th-gen iPod Touch yesterday and played through the first two levels; apart from being a bit shocked that I ever managed to play anything on such a tiny screen, the game perhaps felt even easier to control than it did on the iPad. The only place the controls really fall down at all for me at present is when it comes to climbing up or down, as it seems almost impossible to do so in a straight line, leading to falling off pretty much every ladder/chain/gear/charmed cobra at least once. I'd be interested in seeing a recording of somebody physically playing the game, to see exactly what they're doing with their thumbs/fingers to cause them such difficulty and frustration. I'd agree that if you're used to making sweeping gestures instead of subtle movements, the nature of the floating pad does mean you're going to end up feeling like you're counter-intuitively chasing it around the screen even though you don't need to.
9 times out of 10 it is because people tap when it's an invisible analogue. The update addresses this with type A being a different visual (but essentially identical to what you have now) in addition to new choices/options. Sadly edge mag bashed us for this as well, it is as though people see the dpad visual and expect to tap then wonder why it moves around, and do not want to investigate or experiment. Due to how many titles do get it bad, they assume immediately that it is the most terrible thing on planet earth. This is not their fault. It's nobody's fault, just a lack of options for people due to deadlines. Going forward, you can be sure we won't make that mistake ever again. The poor metacritic score will potentially be affecting the game badly in terms of porting and our business (game industry uses MC to make decisions on future biz deals, unfortunately. It's like linked in for game dev). Therefore we truly hope that the press will be kind enough to take a second look when the controls update arrives, and hopefully MC will look better at the end of it. If it updates, that is We would be very grateful indeed if people all re-assess it, and I know it's a lot to ask but thank you to everyone for being patient.
On my Ipod touch 4th gen, this game is easy to control. I agree about the climbing straight up though, I always seem to go left and right when I climb. Now when I climb I just hold up and keep pressing the jump button, it is easier than climbing and it is much faster.
I roll my thumb around on the screen... but once you go diagonally up and left or right, even rolling your thumb, the d-pad re-positions itself so that the center is now where up/right use to be. Kinda pisses me off when I'm being told that I just didn't mess around with it enough, didn't investigate, or am just a straight up idiot because I can't keep the d-pad where I want it. I've put about 2 hours into trying to play this game, and I got as far as the third stage. The d-pad always ends up at just about the center of the screen. EVEN WITHOUT PICKING MY FINGERS UP.... just doesn't work for me. I didn't assume that it was horrible, or the worst thing on the planet - I tried and tried and tried because of how great I can tell every single other aspect of the game is. Whatever... I just need to unsubscribe from this thread... I've already put more than half of you on my ignore list while trying to bite my tongue... --Idiot out.
You aren't wrong, and no! you're not an idiot. That's like saying that you're an idiot because the car is badly designed and doesn't fit your body shape or preferences. I understand some players accuse others of not "getting it" but that is not what I am saying. I am saying I am 100% responsible and won't make this mistake again. Control issues are NEVER the player's fault - if a player isn't 'getting it' - that's just bad design or poor decision making on the developer's part. The fact is Apple are right when they say "It should just work". No fuss, no drama, it should just work for the player - or at least allow the player to tailor it.
Dude we are in the same boat as far as the controls go. I mean the exact same thing happens to me. I never let it get to the center of the screen before I just lift up my thumb and set it back down in a natural location. Still it starts to move around without lifting my thumb and that's when I quit and decided to wait for the update because I'd rather just not play the game and have a bad experience when I could wait for the fix and get the most out of the purchase. Maybe the bug is related to the size of the thumb? I think mine are fairly average sized thumbs... not big and meaty or anything. My oldest son after he got the game downloaded came to me and said that the controls were terrible in TOB. So maybe smaller thumbs just end up losing the calibration during normal movement? I don't know ... the update though is when I'll finally play past the 2nd level. Still, no reason to subscribe to the thread. There are people that have no problem what so ever then there's all the normal regs I've come to see day to day on here that seem to have the exact same experience with the controls as we have. Until the update hits there's really nothing to talk about. I just keep the thread bookmarked and sometimes check it or if I see it up in the forums see what's what.
To reply to the both of you at the same time: NONE of the devs on The Other Brothers will ever complain about the feedback given. We will always listen and we will never call anyone an idiot for either not playing the game as we intended or voicing their opinion regarding it. We do understand that some people play it differently and with the dpad update we have addressed it. We always listen to feedback, maybe not always agree with it but we always, always take it into consideration. I am really hoping that with the additional control settings you will be able to enjoy the game and HOPEFULLY spread the word that it is fun to play (which we intended and still stand by that it is, even if the controls either align with your preferences or not). game on!
@Devs Your game is really fun. The visual design is top notch, simple yet with little touches and details that add character. I've only played first level (want to wait for the update to experience it with the best controls) but I believe having the movement controls in the shape of a D-Pad is what threw me off at first. Once I read on here that it works like an analog stick, I was able to move around and control my character more easily. It's frustrating to see such a quality game tarnished by such poor reviews on the App Store. You have my 5 Star review, but I want to wait for the update so my score go with the updated version reviews. Good luck
UPDATE AVAILABLE Dear beloved children of the night... the update should now be available worldwide. Please go and check and don't forget to update your rating and review if you would be so kind! There are plenty of new "control" options for all of you! Let us know what you think! https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-other-brothers/id618605145?mt=8 Thomas P.
1.1 is now live as Thomas posted above, so here is some more info for those who missed it: Don't forget - the update defaults to "analogue in the same place" (B). A = what you had before - analogue but with a new visual to demonstrate analogue. B = the new default option, which is a hybrid of fixed dpad and analogue (uses dpad graphic though) - good for people who like A but don't want it to move. C = super crate box style tappy fixed dpad, and is what I suspect people were asking for. You can still slide across it but you'll get no analogue variation in movement as it is fixed digital dpad. People who hate moving on ladders will like this. +iCade of course! Please, please, please, please, please leave a fresh review and stars - Many thanks from the Tob Team.
The fixed digital dpad...control option c... ah yes, the way it should have been. Only played a couple of minutes, but The game controls much better.
