I remember the vic 20. The c64 was the "sequel" to this. They looked identical.

Yep that's me too. I was born in 73 but didn't have exposure or awareness of pop culture until I was 10 or so when we moved to a small town where I meet other kids who had somehow been enlightened. The whole "my first computer " conversation has made me feel a little left out because I didn't get my first computer until I was sixteen. I didn't get another one until 2007. No I didn't have the first one that long, I just never got a replacement.

Now I can say my first video game experiences were on the Commodore 64. The kid across the street from me had one. I don't remember many games but I remember that's when I feel in love with Gauntlet.

FYI, I just googled "Commodore 64" and it look like you can buy one for less then $200. Not a bad price for the nostalgia.

Wow. Looks like a few of you old fogies are actually older than me! I'm 56. Good to know! About the pulled muscle after a sneeze, been-there-done-that! :D
I always say to younger folks, when you go to bed and you're feeling fine and get hurt while you're sleeping and wake up all messed up, you know you're gettin' old! Guys know what I'm sayin'? ;P

You know you are getting old when bookies will actually take odds on whether you will wake up the next day. :D:D:D

About the same age as me, I was born in 74. But ask any kid these days and if you're in your 40's you're ancient apparently :D

Mind you I feel it the day, got a stinking cold and it's eating right into my joints, which is just f'ing delightful with my nerve damage. Thank fook for morphine :D

I bought FFIV (well, II as it was known) from Funcoland brand new (and it was freaking expensive... And beautiful) when they first opened. That was the beginning and end of my life. Or having a life, apparently.

I know that might not make me an old fart, but you old farts would at least understand the meaning of Funcoland. That gives me comfort.

45 here, and I've been through everything. EVERYTHING damn it!
VC-20 (who remembers 'Loderunner' on that?), C64, NES, SNES, Gameboy, Amiga, PC and lots more I don't remember because of my age. My first console was an Atari, if I remember correctly, with Asteroids, even before I got the VC20. I had quite good laughs and lots of "oh yeah I am an old fart, too" moments in this thread so far. Go on, guys, you're hilarious!
Let's go on with that "we were REAL gamers because we had only one difficulty back than: brutal" (it's true, btw.). :D

They just want your money while you are mentally competent. Once some executor takes over they know their scams wont work. :D

I worked out every system I had - quite scary how much money I must have paid over the years:

Commodore 64, Amiga, Amiga (next one up can't remember name), Sega Mega Drive, Sega CD, Sega Game Gear, SNES, Panasonic 3DO, Phillips CD-i, Sega Dreamcast, N64, Nintendo GameCube, Sega Saturn, PlayStation, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, PSP, Playstation Vita. Various PC's.

I have very fond memories of most - C64 (Monty on the Run and Burger Time !!!), 3do (Road Rash and Need for Speed in their original form), Amiga (Elite), Sega (too many to name).

I miss enjoying games as they were back then. Nowadays it's just a Vita and IPad.

Ahhhh, the original NFS. That game had real vehicle physics and a feeling of weight, not like games nowadays... :p

The big thing was the platformers had no save points and when you died, you started all the way back at the beginning. One of my early internet explorations was finding video of the endings of a ton of games that I could never get through.

My middle son when he was about 9 actually completed Aladdin on the SNES. I remember him getting through stage 5 and started saying, "don't die" and then getting through that stage thinking this is impossible.... I cant remember how many stages, but the boss fight was crazy between the wizard and then the snake as he is flipping and flopping around.

All time favorite through all the years? Tough - likely Ocarina, SNES Metroid, and Super Mario on the N64. Most hours on any game? Got over 100 hours on a new game - Dragon Age, but of older school - anyone remember playing GoldenEye???

The N64 had some of the best games - Goldeneye was a great game and playing as Jaws was a bonus.

I'm pretty sure Golden Eye was where my hatred for first person shooters started. I'm awful at those.
