Yes, that's exactly what an allotment is. Lots of sections of land which are rented out by our council to grow veg on. The pigeon people are people who keep pigeons for racing, most grow veg and keep pigeons. I'm stereotyping here, but it's usually a community of middle aged fellas in flat caps meeting in each other's sheds comparing pigeons, discussing races etc, drinking tea etc. it's very very popular where I live, my husbands uncle used to be a well known (around here) pigeon breeder and won many races, he'd make a little bit of money but it all went back into buying pigeons etc. he had an awesome set up, his pigeons lived in a mansion type coop thing while he had a little shanty town style she'd, portable gas cooker, and you'd have ha dozen or so men popping in there from their allotments every lunchtime for a cuppa and a bacon buttie
Pigeon people sound like a friendly bunch. I'd say it's a perfect retirement hobby. As far as the allotments, it makes me grateful for what I have. I live on about an acre of land and I'd love to have more but it's plenty big enough for a garden. My wife and I tried a few years ago and we couldn't keep the afore mentioned deer from eating everything.
Just spotted the thread. 43 here (on New Years Eve) and just ran my first Ultra Marathon in December. Looking forward to doing the London Marathon in April - couldn't have done all that when I was younger. Started playing in about '83 when I received a Commodore 64. Never looked back and had pretty much most consoles since. Not had the latest Xbox or PS4 though as happy with my IPad and Vita.
Old farts and farts that are old. Yep this the place for me #☁️#☁️#☁️#☁️#☁️ I remember waaaaaaaay back in the day we did'nt have all these do dadds and hickimajiggy bottons on our controllers. Bouncing the ball and quickly picking up shiny lil metal pieces was the perfect controller for me. Man it was so much fun hitting someones glass balls out the circle you drew on the ground. For a bad knee and hip can't get down to earth like that no mo'. Ahh, the salad days.
That sort of culture makes me nostalgic for something I've never actually known! It's absolutely charming to comtemplate.
Aye, them were the days I kid you not, I had a gird 'n cleek when I were a lad (Google it.) I also had lots of gadgets and consoles but that's beside the point
I'm not sure about Europe but I really didn't enjoy the diary products in the US as they tasted pretty manufactured (for lack of a better word), I'm sure there's good brands available once you're familiar with what you're buying, but on my short stay I didn't have much luck. Food in general was pretty good though as long as I avoided anything with dairy, totally different from what I'm used to at home but that has been changing over the years too.
In the UK there's a vast array of different milks, with varying degrees of processing done on them. Everything from gold top (barely touched) to some god awful purple topped carton that's little more than coloured water. I know most studies will say that as an adult milk is not required and some will say it's even detrimental to your wellbeing. But I care not, I love milk and I drink lots of the good stuff, have done all my life and at 41 it's never had an adverse effect on me so I'll keep drinking it.
Its not the milk, its the fat content. Adults in the US generally get a lot more fat (especially saturated fats) than they require. Hence all the negativity. I always prescribe moderation since dietary science is generally lacking in a very real understanding of what is truly beneficial vs harmful. I dont use the term "healthy" as that is entirely subjective.
I'm not sure if this is an old fart thing or not but I just realized that the socks I'm wearing or 30 years old. My aunt gave them to me when I was in middle school. #oldfartsocks
o..m..grapesofwrath That iz cool Klink. I have re-read this thread and it mos def has the makings of a great game In my icebox i have seltzer water, some sugarless oatmeal cookies, pumpernickle bread, a couple of stalks of celery, half of a fruitcake, a box of prunes and a nice lil bottle of codliver oil
Holy hell, what are they made of, asbestos??? I go through socks something crazy, but that could be something to do with the fact I don't believe the "fits up to a size twelve (uk, no idea what that is in the US)" nonsense. Sure they "fit" when you stretch them to the bloody limit. Yup, definitely getting old, I'm ranting about socks now
I tell my kids that I have T-shirts older than them (oldest is 23 y/o).. And I have lots of clothing since HS - so about 40+ years old... No socks that old though... Not sure about that one...
You know, life was great until age 45. and then BLAM! it hit me.... I started to fall apart. It's been a long road down, but I have found the road that goes back up, and I am currently on it. Hopefully is is a VEEEEEEERRRRRYYYY long road!
BTW, you know you are old if you remember having to open up a PC game manual to page 11, paragraph 3, word 4, while it has black writing on very dark brown paper, to find the password so you could access the game..... not just once, but every single time you wanted to play.
