I've had a few more freeze bugs now. I'm holding in place at Salamand to up my magic points and my esuna and basuna levels. If forgot how useless a lot of white magic is until you level it up. I need to get Life and start leveling it soon too.
Saved the people of Semmit Falls, purchased Mythril Gear, and now off to stop a super airship from being constructed. Moving right along.
Missed a chance to destroy the Dreadnaught, found the Goddess Bell and lost Josef. That was a bummer. Now on the Kaskuan Keep.
Also, getting really ticked at the freeze bug. It triggers when engaging the shopkeeper in various stores. I've mostly been hit by it in the magic shops, but tonight I got hit by it when I went to buy armor for Josef in the armor shop in Salamand. Really annoying.
I haven't experienced that in the past. Has it just been with latest iOS updates that this has been happening?
Yeah. I've been trying to work out the exact trigger and I think I have it. If you pause at the counter for some reason and the "...." bubble disappears attempting to engage the shop owner freezes the game. To avoid it I have to walk up and immediately engage. I've taken to saving as soon as I walk in the shop in anticipation of the bug.
Destroyed the Dreadnaught and saved Cid and (Fake) Hilda, travelled to Deist, obtained the pendant, talked to the wyvern, obtained the egg and... I'm done. I hate to admit defeat but this game defeated me. I'm sittting on 50,000 Gil with nothing to spend it on. My physical fighters can barely kill mooks, my spells are useless. I have about a million hp meaning I can outlast anything that I meet but the thrill is gone. The game is a long series of fetch quests with a small world made unnaturally hard to navigate. I've beat this game before and I know a tipping point is hit soon. Within the next few hours I'll help the resistance retake Finn, but at some point the game lost me. I've got to rethink this one.
Cool. I'm thinking my issue was I didn't train well at the beginning. I focused entirely on hp and not magic and weapon power.
Yeah I really don't like this leveling system. I'm thinking about ignoring it and just playing through. That's probably a mistake but we'll see.
The game has a pretty serious difficulty spike right around where I stopped. A lot of physical walls start to show up. I'd have been fine if I'd had Maria rely on magic as her primary offense throughout the game. If I'd done that she would have had enough MP and power to carry the team. In hindsight I also should have gone bare fists with Guy. I missed a Mythril Axe in Kasuan Keep and never found another axe. That hamstrung him for a huge portion of the game. It really stinks that they don't sell the Mythril axe in the same shop the other Mythril Weapons pop up in Altair. That feels like a bug as old walkthroughs clearly mention the Mythril Axe in Altair. In fact, what broke me was finding out the next Axe I could purchase was in the bottom of a five floor dungeon. I just couldn't do it. Guy had lost nearly all his offense power and had no magic power.
That's the problem with this leveling system. If you choose the wrong thing to focus on, it can go bad. At the same time, you can't really focus on multiple things because you won't be good at anything. I can't remember what I did the last (and only) time I played through this game. I'm wondering if going magic heavy would work. Are there any bosses that are especially immune to magic?
Still going! Just in case anyone is still reading this threat - yes, there is still someone here playing along the original game! I have made some progress since last week - and maybe even understood some significant things about this game. As planned, I started going around the known world and talking to all the folks once again. And lo and behold, I suddenly found a hitherto unnoticed path, leading me to a big party in the woods. How my guys could have missed it before, I do not know - a party that size must make a racket! Anyway, I did get a canoe and some vital clues, which in tandem led me to my second crystal. After all those nasties in the Earthgift Shrine, the fight for this one was a piece of cake! Having found the crystal, I proudly rejoined the party, and did some more traveling and talking. Which in turn led me to the levistone and finally my airship: I am now taking a crash course in piloting, and it is more difficult than anticipated to find adequate landing spaces. Most of the time, the airship just bounces back up. I guess that means I will have to do some more walking and canoeing (and fighting) than I thought I would at this stage. After that approach was so successful, I have decided to go to the towns and villages first and talk to the locals. And got completely swamped with information at Onrac - the first place I managed to land near enough to. Now it is back to sorting the information out into useful and not so useful, but I am getting confident that with enough going to and fro I will be able to finish this game. The one thing that is still puzzling me is which training camp I will have to send my troupe to in order to have them promoted. Most of the neat bits and pieces my group has picked up along the way they cannot wear yet. And for some time now, my red mage is high enough in magic level, but not in rank, to learn any of those really interesting spells. So far that has not bothered him, as he is quite proficient with his sword, but I would be guessing some more magic might come in useful later. I am sure I will find out one of these days! Keep going with FF2 - I enjoy the company!
It's good to see you're persevering Rabendoppel! Final Fantasy without a walkthough guide is quite a task.
Third one already! This one was easy: Haven't found the Rosetta Stone whilst diving for the third crystal, though. Will spend the night at the Onrac Inn, maybe that will inspire me where to go next
So for FF2, do your levels raise more when fighting higher level enemies? I'm assuming they do but it's hard to tell.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's based on usage in battle. That means tougher enemies require more swings of a weapon, more spells cast, etc. That's why the action cancel bug worked. Defensive stats are different though. HP comes from taking hits, evasion from successful dodges (which is a real bummer), magic defense from taking spells or winning DC's, etc. I've been debating the last few days how to proceed. Do I restart FFII? Do something else? I've decided to start FFIV. I know that seems random but for younger me that WAS FFII. I'll play through my nostalgia games and swing back for FFII, III, and V.
