Day 19: Just one more to go! The Blue Crystal was the easiest so far, I think. Now, my heroes are not sure where to go next. Learning Lufenian? Helping their new friend the little dragon? Whitewater rafting? Off they go...
Do you know if the Ribbon blocks Seal? It seems that the Ribbon doesn't work against some of the optional bosses special attacks. I tried last night and got taken out by 4 of those Minatuar looking things on the 8th floor. They were doing 250 damage and I couldn't take them out quick enough. No saving makes it difficult for going solo. I'll try again today.
I got my team of four monks to the last boss... and Chaos wiped the floor with us. I've been able to get this far without equipping my monks (masters now) without any weapons or armor. I think in order to beat Chaos I'm going to have to equip my crew with armor... hence ending my "naked monk run". A sad day...
The Labrynth does a quick save if you end up getting to an "inner sanctum." That's a non-challenge floor where you can heal and choose Red or Blue. I actually died on the Warmech floor and fortunately was able to resume a quicksave there. So there's that. Seal isn't stopped by Ribbons sadly. All four of my characters have a ribbon after the bonus dungeons.
Ahh...that changes things. I went through one of those rooms on my first run but I didn't even try to resume after I died. I tried again this morning and got wiped out by a 4 dragon ambush. I can kill each one with one hit but after the ambush I only had about 300 hp left. These are definitely the hardest random encounters in the game.
It won't help, I promise! You need some top potions - elixirs and X-potions - plus Hermes shoes and lots of giant's gloves (saber). Maybe use blink (Defender) lots too. Basically buff up one monk as much as you can using the other guys, and he'll take out Chaos. You might lose some friends on the way though!
Yeah. And Random is a good word. On some floors I'm easily mowing down enemy's groups that can barely scratch me... and then I run into a group hitting my guys for 250+ at a time. I still have Omega to go but I suspect I won't get him before the end of the month. My wife's phone had a major catastrophe and I've let her clone it onto mine so we can figure out what she's lost. Needless to say that means my Final Fantasy data is in limbo. I'm hoping it's there when I restore my back up, but that may be a few days.
Sorry about your data but keeping the wife happy is always more important than a video game. Thanks to your resume game tip, I got to Chronodia 3 times but got destroyed every time. Once I was able to caste Blink twice and she still hit me for over 1100 damage. I don't think there's any strategy for that so I'm throwing in the towel. It was fun trying though!
Whoa. After falling to Omega many times, I finally read up on strategies for a non-white mage party. And thank goodness I did. So many rounds later of using white robe, defender, and rune staff, I finally was able to buff up my knight's attack. And then many rounds of multiple healings and single attacks, he fell! It's kind of ironic that I took him on to get the best sword for my Ninja, but my Ninja did nothing to help me beat Omega. It was easier only having to keep three people buffed and healed. Man, that was a rush. Time to heal up and push on.
Got the phone issues sorted out and thankfully my phone back up kept my Final Fantasy save. On into Lifespring to fight Omega.... Sorry the solo run on Chronidia didn't work. I can't imagine fighting her with a solo group thanks to seal. That's a really annoying part of her battle.
Day 20: This is the final leg of their journey, I guess. The heroes made camp next to the Mirage Tower, resting in preparation for their final battle. Tomorrow will not only decide their destiny but also the fate of the whole world. Knight Hachi, Master Tanabe, Red Wizard Yuri and White Wizard Fee are sitting around the fire during a cold desert night, each one lost in his own thoughts, the clear night sky above them ablaze with millions of stars. The heroes have been given something called a Warp Core by a metallic man, who called himself Mr. Data. That gift should enable them to travel between the stars tomorrow. Two days left to save the world. If that's not pressure, then I don't know what is. And still no trace of the Adamantite! Notable quote of the day: "*buzz* *whirr*"
Finally have the second crystal, but time grows short! I wasted some time grinding because I thought it was spell level (and not class) that was keeping me from acquiring certain spells. Now that I have my new classes things seem to be going quickly. Fewer random battles - perhaps I'm overpowered at this point? No matter, I charge forward to save the world! This is actually my first time with FF1. I'm glad TA is helping to kick start my going through my huge RPG backlog (I blame Shaun).
Feels like Groundhog Day Surprise, surprise, I'm still here! And will be for a while, for that matter - there is no way I am going to finish this this month. But then, I did not really expect to, given that I have never played this game, started half way through the challenge, and do not have the time to play 24/7. As expected, leaving the inland sea gave me some uplift. I managed to put in some travel around the world before successfully yielding to the advice I got at Melmond. Strange that all those exotic islands do not bother with harbours... But looking closer to home was a good thing. I particularly liked the back door of the Giant's Cave. And I did discover my first crystal on Wednesday! Ever since that moment of glory luck seems to have left the party. So far, all four of my adventurous friends must have died at least 6 times in the Earthgift Shrine: three times due to some rather nasty creatures down at level B5; three times before they even got there, curtesy of these beauties in the desert. Don't know why they bothered teaming up - I did not stand a chance against one of them even with my red mage holding out rather nicely the second time round. No idea whether it is even possible to beat these things or whether they are some game designers idea of a joke - whichever it is, I have the distinct feeling I will need some more rounds of dying before my guys have enough experience on their back to have the slightest chance to get through level B5. Literally finding out the hard way that I had run out of Gold Needle, I had a break from the shrine and did a shopping tour on Friday. Basically I stocked up on everything available at the shops - you never know. Luckily that included tents and sleeping bags, both of which have come in very useful when repeatedly re-appearing at the doorstep of the shrine. The dwarf that stands there warning you not to go in must be laughing his head off by now. At 23 hours playtime, my party is now mainly at level 35. Just the monk that they had to drag around like a piece of stone for quite some time is now one level behind, and I do not see him catching up that level any time soon. I am determined to find out which level my guys will need to get through this blasted shrine without being killed along the way!
Just want to say that I'm really enjoying reading the adventures of all you newbies! Part of me wants to offer tips or helpful suggestions, but then that would ruin the fun in you working things out for yourself. Keep going guys! Chaos is just around the corner.
The End The deed is done! The great evil Chaos has been slain and along the way my team of 4 little monks grew into masters! Then end fight itself took a LOT of Strength Tonics, 2 Mega Elixers, 1 Hermes Shoe, and 1 X Potion to kill Chaos. I buffed up my top Master with about 12 Strength Tonics then gave him a Hermes Shoe for the Haste effect while keeping everyone alive with the mega elixirs/x potion. With all those buffs my main Master was hitting 24 times for over 5,000 damage a turn which made short work of that pesky Chaos. My play-through of FF1 has ended but good luck to those still trying!!! Thanks Shaun for putting this together and I hope to see ya'll for next months adventure!
So, even though I waited until I switched jobs, I have now run through each of the four shrines once. And I'm just going through Whisperwind a second time for another rune staff and genji helmet, as well as little things. Then I wondered if the Labyrinth of Time was in this version. I'd probably have to level another 30 levels to feel confident about tackling that. If it's in here, has anyone tackled it this time? I'll probably save in a couple slots and just beat it today so I can say I did. But then use one save to keep leveling and try to beat everything later.
Congrats to all! Congratulations to those who finished (especially if for the first time) and to those who fought valiantly against the Real Life monster to try to finish. One month seems like a lot of time, but really flies by before you know it. I was waylaid by far too many things this month and wasn't able to finish my journey. I've still checkes in on the thread almost daily though and enjoyed reading everyone's recaps. Here's to hoping I get a bit more time next month...
