Hear this: anyone who fells Chaos on a solo run will receive a guaranteed small silly thing from Japan. Make sure you screenshot your victory.

Small silly thing....you will be mine.

Won't be easy with my glass cannon Monk though.

I think the ribbon only stops status ailments - not instadeath. You need a protect ring to stop that.

I wasn't sure so I used both and I still died every time he cast that spell. I'm going through Hellfire Chasm looking for X-potions now.

I was going to keep leveling in the Chaos Shrine but after mention of the Small Silly Thing I couldn't wait any longer. I was at level 86 when I got to Chaos and I had 2 X-potions, 2 Elixirs, and 1 Megalixir. I used Defender to cast Blink first. Then I used Hermes shoes for Haste. I got lucky when he caste Slow and missed. Then I used the Giants gloves for Saber about 6 times while using my heal items when needed. When I attacked for the first time I did 9999 damage. Two more hits and it was over. I even had my Megalixir to spare.

Thanks for starting this thread Shaun. I would never have tried that without this play along. Haven't had this much fun with a game in a long time. And thanks to OrangutanKungfu for helping me strategize.

Before, the death throes, and after.

Well, I guess this means I have to give this a shot. Been a busy week, but maybe this weekend I can try to finish this. I'm at Chaos now level 99 Fighter, but have very little in the way of good potions. I will go get some and then give him a shot. Congrats RHess!! Been a lot of fun following this.

Great job, RHess! I've also enjoyed following your adventures. You and ColonCruncher definitely deserve whatever mad Japanese gift Shaun drums up!

    Thanks guys!

Coloncruncher, I know I could not have done it without those X-potions and Elixirs. There is an X-potion and Elixir in the Cardia Islands. Just check all the holes. There is an Elixir on level 3F in the Chaos Shrine and a Megalixir on B2. I found one other X-potion in one of the optional dungeons but I can't remember which one. I think it was Lifespring. Good luck!

Day 13: This fifth level of the Earth Shrine is quite the hurdle. Going back to Melmond and Crescent Lake in order to redistribute spell knowledge between my White and Red Mages. And, finally, I let the monk loose. Smiling, he threw all his equipment away and started to dance.

Again, using the latest edition of the 'Renowned Atlas of the Earth and its Shrine' my party descended to the fifth floor and its inhabitants.

This is much harder than I thought. And much more fun!

Congrats to the guys running this solo! Major accomplishment!

I'm running the post game dungeons now. Earthgift is done, Hellfire fell today. I'm a bit terrified of Lifespring as you have to run the floors twice and face two of the hardest bonus bosses. Eep. But that is tomorrow's problem.

Welcome! It's been so fun, and it's just the beginning! I would think there's still time for you to play through the game by the end of the month, dive in!

Gah. Lifespring Grotto is long. Didn't even finish the first run today. Five floors to go before I have to choose a boss and then run it again. At least with Whispercove it's one mighty run.

    Thanks

It's been a while since playing a final fantasy game but they are still on my top games list beside dragon quest

Any tips for starting this game off.

I also decided to play the App Store version because I friend owned it but after playing it for a while I've noticed the controls aren't the best and wish I went with the gba version and just emulated (I do own the hard copy) but I don't want to restart. :)

You're right about the controls - maddening when you go the wrong way and get a random encounter instead of, say, entering a town. But you do get used to them eventually. Welcome to the playalong!

Let us know what team you went with. Did you roll dice for it?

Beat Shinryuu in Lifespring Grotto today. Ragnarok and a Hero's Shield. Whoot! That's a big catch for my team.

Not looking forward to the second deep dive to fight Omega but I'm committed now.

Surprise, surprise: the clueless newbie is still around!

It has been a while, and I must admit that I am a humble admirer of all those that have finished in the time I have now spent on this game. Personally, I get the distinct feeling I left it too late to start in order to be able to finish by the end of this month...

I will spare you all the embarrassing details of my party's travels - suffice it to say that after 12:30 hours of playtime (yes, I did put in at least one hour every day!), they have finally found their way out of the inland sea.
And they only managed that after I told my party to eat their pride and take notes. With minutes of all meetings in hand, they saw the light and it was a lot easier to find out which little treasure to take where in return for something else. After some fierce arguments over their reporting skills, they even managed to figure out that it was not all bad note taking if the information that was given at the different places changed over time. I am not sure whether I consider this to be more of a brilliant or annoying feature of the game ;)
And still it was more luck than anything else that they had the nitrate ready when they finally remembered that they had been to Mount Duergar right at the beginning, never to return with the notebook ready. I guess these guys prefer sailing to walking...

On the upside of having taken this long, even though I have only been marauding around the area of the inland sea, my whole team is now up to level 20 - which is not much, I know, but considering the fights got a bit tedious at the end, I suppose the increase in experience was not all that great, either. All in all the two monks are a bit behind as they took a liking to being killed in the Marsh Cave and subsequently resurrected at the Elven Castle (kind of an occupational hazard, I guess). I hope this will get better now the thief managed to acquire enough silver rings to go around.

Close to giving up before, I am now excited to continue in the great big world that I have just discovered! I'll be starting to explore the Cavern of the Earth later tonight, having found the Lifespring Grotto and Melmond in a sorry state. With the limited healing powers of my red mage, I have stocked up on potions and phoenix downs - better safe than sorry! Without the comfort of a tent for the night, my party tends to get health issues not to be joked about when trying to make a strategic withdrawal. And the resurrection chambers seem to be in bitter disrepair at Melmond, so these monks better be careful!

    Onwards to great adventures! :)

Don't worry about that playtime. Playing for the first time and without a guide, you're doing just fine. It doesn't take me as long because I've finished the game at least a dozen times before.
