I've noticed already trekking a couple caves since hardly anything does any real damage and he's one less person to worry about curing for now :)
    About to fight the Lich

I just found the post associated with this thread and love the idea of playing through a game and sharing with others. I'm new to this community, but it seems nice and I'm looking forward to following all your journeys.

That said, here's my party. It was generated using the d6 method. I've never played without magic before so this should be interesting. I decided to name all my characters like I used to when I played the game when it first came out. I was like 10 and thought I was being really clever and cool with the names. Plus on the original NES version you could only have 4 character names.

We've just started and are about to beat Garland.

Well didn't keep the great axe long I'm now at Crescent Lake Town and I bought the mythril axe for my warrior
And the mythril sword for my red mage
Can't get the magic yet believe since I'm level 24 I will
Need to be 25 as for the white magic I am not using a white mage and my red mage isn't a wizard yet so can't buy any of that but for time being I can give the red mage some black magic

Remember you can always add and remove magic so don't worry about those you can't get just get what you can to strengthen your characters

I am 17 hours in, 4 level 52 Red Mages, and am struggling pretty hard to even get through the first few floors of the final tower. I'm going to grind a bit, but am finding the 4 Reds to be awful at the later stages of the game. The lack of weapons, armor, and magic choices are catching up with me.

    couple days behind

I know I am a couple days behind but since this Play along is going until Feb I figured I will start now. I have not played this game in about 13 years so should be fun.

Just reached Melmond. Wow 36000 Gil is a hefty price. Is the armor worth the money?

So, first impressions from a first-time FF player:

    - Level 5 after 49 minutes. I've beaten Garland, earned a lute (yay?) and had a bridge built to the north. I'm still using basic armor and weapons, upgrading a bit at the appropriate store early on but haven't been back.

    - I haven't purchased any more spells for my white mage after the few level 1s. Think I need to get back into Cornelia to do this before I explore much more.

    - Combat is very boring so far. All I do is click attack and once in a while heal or protect a character with my mage.

    - With combat dull and conversation with NPCs very limited, this game has not hooked me in yet. I'm hopeful this changes.

It might not hook you in and that's OK. The base game is nearly 30 years old and is no where near the games we have today. At least you can say you gave it a shot though and played a bit of gaming history.

Given that this game was released in 1987, and given the inherent limits of electronics as a whole at that time, it's a very good game. Hey, if the original Super Mario Brothers were only just released this year, everyone would complain about lack of saves, lack of skills, lack of feeling of progression, etc. It'd just be a tired cliche of the endless runner...

    That being said...

I don't have an Apple product anymore as both the iPhone I had and the iPad I had are now with my wife in the Philippines (for another year or so), I will have to resort to the copy on Final Fantasy Origins unless I happen to have access to it elsewhere. I was hoping to play one of the newer builds but perhaps it isn't meant to be. I very nearly started it last month but decided to wait and see what Square Enix might be doing for the 30th anniversary this year...

Day 4: I have a ship now! I borrowed it from a pirate. And with the ship came a map of the whole game world. Or maybe it was just a coincidence, because, after I saw it for the first time, its second invocation was only successful after an awful lot of experimentation with the UI.

There were even more surprises on this day! One: The ship doesn't seem to be able to enter rivers. Bummer! Two: The people from Pravoka are a ungrateful, disrespectful bunch, always standing in the way, blocking the narrow streets of their home town. And this despite the fact that my party got rid of the pirates in their stead. Three: Crossing the bridge over from Claudia resulted in... the game starting with a proper title sequence.

With access to a map of the wider world and mounting requests by its inhabitants --- of which some are sick, some lost their eyes, some were forced to leave their home --- I hazard a guess that this is not a game where one completes completely one stage after another. I am very curious to see what kind of different choices all the players from the forum make and to what effect.

Today's main concern: The Monk; which has become the weakest member of the party. What is a monk good for, I wonder.

Today's favorite spell: Sleep; which is ideal for helping a large group of beasts deciding who will be killed first and who has to wait its turn.

After about four hours of game time the party ends their day in Elfheim. Everyone has reached level 9.

Notable quote of the Day: "Such a strange spell to swish-swish-aree!"

I almost never buy that armor. You'll find better armor in the dungeons. Unless you have an over abundance of Gil.

I thought this sounded fun so I rolled for a party of Warrior, Thief, Monk, White Mage. Not bad starting out. Only trouble is large groups, but once I get some spellcasting items then my White Mage can handle AOE while the rest of my party will deal good physical damage. Endgame I think this party will really rock! I've made it to Elfheim, paid my respects to Link, and am on my way to get a crown from the marsh cave for some crazy Elf in the castle.

Yes, my expectations are tempered by the age of the game. I've played computer/console games since before this game was released, so I'm trying not to compare this experience to anything released recently. In my mind, I'm comparing it to the Ultima series.

Any thoughts on this? It feels like I'm going to do a lot of leveling to have a shot, not sure if I'm wanting to grind forever just for this one battle. I seem to spend most of my time healing as 2 consecutive attacks will wipe my party. I'm not able to do much damage (under 100 typically) no matter what spell I use, the Red Mage with the Masamune does some decent damage when he gets a critical(200) but that doesn't happen nearly enough. After about 10 minutes of slowly whittling away at Chaos he seemed to heal most (if not all) of the damage I'd done. Having a fighter and a White Mage in the past made this battle so much easier. Not enjoying this lineup.

Do you have the Giants gloves? They cast Saber and I think it stacks. If you can load one of your mages with 4 or 5 Sabers and a Haste it will greatly increase your damage.

1:34 in and level 12. Haven't faced the marsh cave yet. Power leveling north of Pravoka as I hate the whole Magic Key series of quests and I want to steamroll that as fast as possible. Once I've cleaned out Elfheim I'll move on.

Thank you, this seems very helpful, I havent tried on Chaos as I am leveling a bit, but it has worked quite well on the Earth Fiend.
