The FF1 replay was a great idea. I may be done already (tons of late night game time while tending to my 4 month old), but it's still fun watching everyone else's progress. I'm certain I know the game Shaun picked for later in the year. I will be there, the only question is what difficulty I will use... As for other options, I'm hoping for KOTOR to be one of the picks. I haven't played that since the original on Xbox, and it would be good to play it again. I'm sure there will be a Dragon Quest *somewhere*; my favorite is V, but IV might be better for this purpose. Another one that's been on my iPad since I got it is Bastion, I'd love to have an excuse to play that again. If there is another Square game, my heart lies with FF Tactics (but there are more than just FF games out there) or The World Ends With You (but I can't see that being picked unless it goes on sale). I dearly love both.
Chaos Rings III as a pick would definitely be awesome, but it's really not the type of game you could just play for a month.
That's probably an issue with FFT for some as well. After 30+ times through, it's old hat for me, but it's hard for me to approach it from the perspective of someone who can't quote damage formulas...
The World Ends With You is my fav game ever and I've been gaming since 1985 I'm enjoying playing through FF1 since I have never beat it even though I've played it before Now I'm sticking to beating it and I just beat DQ1 last year so I was planning on doing this anyways and it's not real long I also want to beat FFIX this year and VII again DQV would be great I have a Japan account and VII is my fav of all the mobile versions but it obviously can't be a pick yet
I totally agree with you on that all the way Record keeper has hopes weapon again Just popped up again with the XIII event going on I'm playing through final fantasy 1 but still keeping my daily plays of record keeper möbius and brave exvius both us and Japan versions it's been crazy keeping up with all but I'm in a groove now Oh and final fantasy legends 2 is great too I play it regular And now I'm very into Code of Joker Pocket which is a CCG based on the arcade CCG and it's easily best mobile CCG I've played to date and the arcade feel makes it so fun so that's keeping me busy too Code of Joker is Japan only and always will be
KOTOR is a great shout - but mainly because I have had it sitting in a folder for about a year without ever firing it up. I do want to play it though! I fully expect Ys to crop up as a playalong - it's another one that's short enough for everyone to burn through it. And I am in the same boat as Dailon: The World Ends With You is probably my favourite game, full stop. Be great to see others get into it - but as you say, the price may be a bit high for many to pick it up on a whim.
I am waiting for KOTOR 2. Then I plan on playing both. TWEWY is a great game. Maybe I have to pick up it again to do the "secret ending", which I never did on DS.
Just started listening to the RPG Reload podcast, and listening to Eric wax lyrical about Jeff Vogel inspired me to ask a question. This goes for the rest of the forum too, by the way! What's the best story you've come across in gaming? I'm obviously thinking RPGs specifically, as story is so central to many of them, but feel free to think beyond the genre (and iOS) borders too. For RPGs, I adore The World Ends With You - but that might be more of a package deal, because the music and gameplay is also so excellent. Yet that is the first one that springs to mind for me. Beyond that, it's probably, weirdly, a first-person shooter: Bioshock. The way they meshed the story with the action there made it one of the few in-game narratives that actually linger in the memory. Oh, and I haven't considered interactive fiction, but there's no reason why anyone else shouldn't. Let's hear it! Edit: just thought of one more: The Dig, by LucasArts. Enjoyed that one a lot.
Haven't played it myself, but Shadow of the Colossus seems to be a pretty big fan favorite when it comes to story in a game. A personal favorite of mine is Chaos Rings III, but that's just because the game is really good in general. But I agree that The World Ends With You is great. As for non-RPGs, Red Dead Redemption was a rollercoaster of emotions for me when I played it.
I forgot all about Shadow of Colossus loved that game Need to port it to mobile Thanks for bringing that memory back up
Never played Shadow of the Colossus, but it's probably No 1 on my list of desired ports for iOS. Followed by Okami. I could dig them both out of the PlayStation store, probably, but I never game on that anymore - too many competitors for the television at home!
Been thinking about your response, Nekko, and think it's interesting that we both picked FPS games for great stories. I've not played Red Dead Redemption, so I'm not qualified to talk about it, but maybe there's something in that first-person viewpoint that makes a story more affecting. For me, with Bioshock, it might have been because I wasn't expecting a story with my shooter, having really only played the odd Medal of Honour, Doom or Wolfenstein. Yet I maintain the writing on that game is excellent. It had a good twist, and the way it funnels you into the Big Daddy ending is just marvellous. The World Ends With You is genuinely a decent story, in an anime trope kind of way (not necessarily a criticism), but it didn't wrongfoot me the way Bioshock did.
Red Dead Redemption isn't exactly a FPS, but I see what you mean . I think games affect me a lot more because when I play, I tend to "be" the character, so to speak. I see what the character sees; I feel all the emotions the character feels. I pretty much went through all of RDR experiencing everything as if I was John Marston, the protagonist. So naturally I was pretty upset when I saw the ending to RDR. Not going to spoil anything, of course, in case you ever get the chance to play it.
I really love Mass Effect lore. Even the ending didn't ruin it for me, which says how much I loved the game. I felt very absorbed on Alan Wake. The atmosphere was awesome. I think there was never an "stellar writing" in a game that I have played, but the immersion makes up for that.
Thanks to your review on empire of angels iv I'm now buying up all the Softstar games I've already bought the first two in the Xuan Yuan Sword series This is available in the us App Store but caution it is in Chinese only empire of angels iv is in English The xuan yuan series is in Chinese as well just a heads up
I basically now have very Softstar game on App Store The one in English empire of the angels iv I'm liking a lot but the others are even better and I love the authentic Chinese music in the games Just like with Japanese I'm still in a learning phase of the language and may be for a while but I know and can figure out enough Chinese to enjoy these games
Finally finished FF today just in time! I think it was great so many new rpg-players jumped i too! Now I'm back to FFIV on my Vita. And I'm hoping to beat Setsuna soon too!
