Just started FFIX this week (after buying it on launch). It's probably the Final Fantasy I most wanted to play, having gone from FFVII to FFVIII to FFX back in the early days of the PS2. Thankfully, so far it has not disappointed in any way. Love it.

I also feel FFVIII gets a bad rap. I really enjoyed it back in the day and, even as an inveterate grinder who levelled up indiscriminately early on, I never had a problem with the game. With junctioning, your characters will still have maxed out whatever attributes you want to concentrate on. I guess the most irritating aspect is the moody teenaged protagonist, but I'd still put it ahead of the on-rails FFX.

Guess I'll have to go on to FFVI after I'm done with FFIX.

I have only played some of FFIX, but I really liked it. I could play it on PSP, but seeing how glowing review the port got I will happily spend my money again and play it on my ipod since I love it for gaming and it has a gourgeous screen! Does it have game center support? Gotta love achievements, at least I do. I will probably try FFVI on iOS for that reason. I wish they had created an art style that was more concistent. They had to have known it would get reactions. But playing it on iOS if it has achievements like V do just might be worth it. I was actually fine with V, I think it is maybe more consistent graphicwise? Hope I can get used to it. And having it on iOS..

That's nice to hear! I like the setting much more than VII and the story should be more to my liking too, I hope I can get past the battle system!

Does FFIX have Game Centre achievements? Yes, oh yes. Er, 83 achievements to be precise. Square Enix, or the Thai guys who ported it, really knocked this one out of the park. Brilliant game. The backgrounds are a bit blurry, but it's all very charming. Love it.

    Perfect!

I must say I am actually enjoying FFII A LOT! It looks so good it's ridiculous on my ipod 6! And I'm having a lot of fun tinkering with the battlesystem even though it might be broken.

Tip for IX make sure you back up your save file before updating the game
I was 33 hours in and didn't do that updated it and had to start over but this game is so good I didn't even mind and actually have found a couple things I missed.

Not sure what you mean by back up? I have never really understood the cloud save, is that what you mean? Or just many save files? I have a tendency creating waay to many lol.

I've been playing Phantasy Star 2 Online from the Japan App Store and it's really not bad for a FTP game anyways noticed today on Hulu there is a Phantasy Star 2 Online anime series as well and it's on Hulu. I love phantasy star and thought I would alert other fans about this. steins;gate is an awesome Japan App Store game that also has an anime series on Hulu!
Oh and on steam I picked up all the phantasy star Sega reboots they had :) loving part IV
I have never played part IV until now!

    Nice, thanks!

I played almost through Phantasy Star 2 before and loved it so much! I will play through 1-4 , it's on my tbp-list! Yes 3 too :p

Which one do you like the most? I'm so happy I have Phantasy Star 2 on my phone! I don't really get why they spewed them out on steam, but don't want to release the last ones on ios. I don't know of course porting, but imagine it wouldn't be too huge a cost? I don't really require a lot of the ports, like Shining Force and PSII is enough if they would just release them ^^
Probably not happening though. I bought I and IV on Wii , but I don't play a lot of games on my tv now. I like playing with my boyfriend and he doesn't like handhelds while I love it. So most time is spent with ipod, psp and other handhelds. Will probaby play I on my android, II on my ipod since it is my favorite device, III and IV on my psp from the genesis collection.
It's great games! I think it is a series that deserves playthroughs even today. But them I love gaming old games on newer devices so it might be too old for newer gamers.

Remember what sega did quit porting their games in favor of new crappy FTP games :( so I don't ever see it happening actually why I went ahead and got in on steam cuz I saw it pop up all 4 together and I'm thinking I've never played Iv so I snapped it up for only 2.99 for all. The port on steam I will
Be honest kind of sucks the iOS port was better. And I'm actually loving the anime series now. The one I've been playing on iOS is phantasy star 2 online its only available in the Japan App Store and of course it's in Japanese. It's a free to play game but one of those few that I don't mind and it's still fun.

No japanese for me unfortunately. That's why I am crazy over the moon waiting for Romancing SaGa 2!

Agreed the port on iOS is better! Psp too. I have them on steam too, but I preferred the handheld ports/collection. I have bought Phantasy Star II 3 times now when I think of it lol. Maybe 4. No regrets though. It's nice to show interest in them even though it probably changes nothing.

You're excitement for Romancing the Saga 2 is totally justified! that's one game I had never played bought on a whim and cuz I love square and fact they are producing good premiums now I am addicted and it's my favorite mobile game right now. I can understand a good bit of it but still I will buy the english version too no matter the cost, yes buying it twice with no regret that good to me!

That's great to hear!! I hope it gets the release date soon. They released a trailer and it is just amazingly gourgeous! (To a person who loves Snes graphics that is).

Even though I will play Treasure of the Rudras, Bahamut Lagoon, Treasure Hunter G, Seiken D.3.. On my android phone using an emulator. I still haven't given up completely that they might release them and Romancing SaGa really gives hope it can happen!! I would buy them all! I would probably buy even the super obscure or even the not too good ones lol.

Steam just added final fantasy x and x2 as a bundle together for 23.99 here's the cool part it's HD remakes!! So looks very good
I'm gonna be homeless soon if they don't stop haha
I bought a PS2 just to be able to play FFIX and X and X-2 now they are all available elsewhere I would regret it but my 6 and 15 year old daughters (avid gamers) are loving it! ha

And of course they're Windows only. Bummed that they don't offer any of the FF games for Mac even though many have iOS apps now. Eh, I guess I'll have to use Wineskin or Bootcamp.

It's awesome they offered it on steam!! I'm going to buy a vita to get to play it on the go though. But I already have VII, VIII and Suikoden to play on PSP, sp I'm in no hurry yet.

Me too! Even though I will probably have played tgem all on android by then it would be amazing and if they added achievements I would completely in heaven. Also fantranslations are fine, I'm grateful someone took the time since I don't know japanese and play little on consol anyway, but it's better to have the real thing and skip porn magazines, intimate conversstions and the other occasional odd stuff lol.

And by the way: does the Romancing SaGa japanese version have achievements?

Question for Shaun: Do you think that Romancing SaGa might mean Square is willing to tap into more of their backlog eventually? They don't make that many amazing gmes any more and grabbing for their backlog seems a great and not too hard way of making money?

Live-A-Live... anyone played that one? I would love to see it on mobile just to get Shaun's review. So unique... so creepy.
