Oh nice group. I love RPGs especially developed by Square-enix, Atlus, Capcom, and Bandai. Will keep on touch with this thread.
Hey Shaun: That guy you went to school with named Toews; his first name wasn't Jonathan, was it? Enjoying the podcast right now.
Spectral Souls is far superior to Blazing Souls in my opinion. Has none of the map searching features. I also really disliked that feature in Blazing Souls. Spectral Souls is probably my second favorite SRPG of all time after FFT.
Hi JD! Thanks for the kind words about the podcast. No, his name wasn't Jonathan. His first initial was 'D'. Maybe related to a Jonathan?
Are you sure you're Canadian? There's a very well known hockey player named Jonathan Toews. If you've spent any time in the Chicago area in the last few years you've heard it pronounced... (I'm not a huge hockey fan, but I visit my parents in Chicago, so I knew how to pronounce it when you asked the question on the podcast. ) Edited to add: Hmm, a quick internet search, and perhaps you're just being coy...
I'm 75% sure they're related, actually. Not that many Toews around the region, after all. I can confirm that I used to play street hockey with my grandmother's next-door-neighbour's kids, who included a young Mike Richards. So we're not short on NHL players in the area, either. I just hope Jonathan fares better in the long run than Mike did.
Wow, cool. And I didn't mean to impugn your hockey cred. I wish I actually had something about RPG's to add to this thread, but I've been too busy to actually play any for a long time, so I get my fix vicariously through the Reload.
Super excited to hear about this! As the author of a book on Amazon about Firefox OS games, I can completely recommend the experience. The history of old games is rapidly being lost and your encyclopedic knowledge will in very handy to preserve the complicated history of RPGs. Go for it!
Hey guys ... just found out about this thread. Hope i can join. @Shaun: It's awesome that RPG Reload will be put in a book. Quick question, what's your favourite RPG of all time? Mine has to be Planescape Torment ... the most complex and engrossing storyline I've ever played through.
That's a tough question to answer. And if you ask me again in a couple weeks, I might give you a different answer. But for today, I'll go with Dragon Quest 5. The story really touched me.
Me too but tough to put it ahead of the square heavy hitters like FF6 or 4 (9 too) even. That's a stretch, but a great game still.
Shaun I'm 12 hours in to final fantasy xiii on the Japan App Store and I swear something is diff from the us version, keep in mind I have never played final fantasy xiii us version... Just curious if there is any big differences in the two. I'm on a quest this year to play all the final fantasy games that I haven't played yet which is 9-12 now! Tomorrow I'm buying a ps2 plus part x and x-2. Also curious as to why there is a lot of hate out there for 13 I'm loving it! Need to add what got me to thinking it may be diff was a gameplay video I watched on YouTube and they were playing English version and some of the terminology seemed diff.
To the best of my knowledge, the only major difference between the JP and US versions of FF13 (besides the actual translation of course) is replacing the song "Dear My Friends" with "My Hands" for goodness-knows-what reason. I think to understand the backlash FF13 got, you have to realize how long it was in development and how big people's expectations were. I also think it gets bagged on too badly. It's not my favorite FF, but the combat system is excellent, the game is fairly challenging, and while it's extremely linear with a kinda-dumb story, that basically means it's just like FF4/10. People were expecting a lot more, though.
I got you Shaun thanks for responding and yep I did eventually find it and the diff is the songs you mentioned. As for the story I can see that being not the best but I think it's the combat system that got me hooked in and graphics are excellent. I also like the fact the Japanese version has an easy and normal mode. It's a little early to tell right now but I'm thinking xiii-2 may be better. Which one do you like best? I'm playing both at same time and xiii-2 seems less linear.
By the way I wanted to get dragon quest vii for ps one and it was 200$ in some sites needless to say not going to pay that Does anyone know when it's supposed to come USA App Store? I am very seriously thinking about buying the Japan app store version but having never played this one I am wondering if the language barrier would be too much to overcome as I am not fluent in Japanese but I do know enough to play some games.
There's no time frame on the English iOS version, but I expect it will be after the 3DS launch which is supposedly in the summer. There could be a window of exclusivity since Nintendo is publishing the 3DS version in NA, but who knows? Best case scenario, September. Worst case, possibly early next year. As for whether it's doable in Japanese, I'd advise waiting for the English one. It's a very open-ended, text-heavy game with lots of specific or made up words, and since it's changed quite a bit from the PS1 version, you can't even guide-smash your way through.
Thanks very much and have a good weekend. I thought there was something diff about vii from most of the others before it. Glad I didn't waste my yen
Shaun or anyone else who might know I need some help! I am trying to play final fantasy agito from the Japan App Store and I can't figure out what ID it is asking for at the start and I can't seem to bypass it. Sucks cuz this game looks really great! Thanks for any help cuz I have searched for a long time and can't find anything online to help. This one and GBike are the only two of any I've got on their App Store that I can't seem to get past start menus.
Me three, but I had some cry moments in FFVII, too. Do you remember the little-known '80s RPG Questron? For some reason that one, despite the fact that reading the story now reads like every fantasy RPG ever and it was criticized as an Ultima clone, got to me...
