Exactly my point too. But whether or not we will see this implemented and widespread, remains to be seen. Here's hoping. The high resolution is great for text, photos, 2D games and some 3D games. But for some it's just too darn much. Maybe the next iPad has the needed power. 2048x1536 IS a darn lot of pixels. I mean, my 1k USD pc struggles with some games in 1920x1200. Expecting better or even equal performance from a 600 USD tablet is crazy.
The problem is the software, not the hardware in this case. Real Racing 2 has never looked better, as a counter example. The problem is the software, not the hardware in this case. Real Racing 2 has never looked better, as a counter example. The upscaling on the Xbox is aided by a separate chip. On the PS3 it's handled by intensive software running on a combination of SPUs. Upscaling beyond what the iPad does already would be expensive, I'd reckon.
Yeah.. upscaling takes <0.5% performance or so.. for(var i = 0; i < DisplayHeight; i++){ for(var j = 0; j < DisplayWidth; j++){ renderedImage.paintPixel(i,j,lowResImage.getPixel(int(i/2),int(j/2))); } }
My god Asphalt HD is stuttery mess, also anisotropic filtering looks too grainy/overdone, from what i seen i doubt its due to higher resolution, because frankly some of the details are like from Playstation 1, especially textures on both of sides.
Ipad 3 complaints :S Wifi was terrible..range was half of the ipad 2 inside the house...the thing ran super hot like 113 degrees, I believe this was causing the gpu to overheat and cause terrible slow down/lag...battery life is about on par but for how long? the camera has more megapixels and pictures looked better, but seems like the focal length was half of the ipad 2. Man, I wish ol steve jobs was still around.. looks like i will be doing my portable gameing on iphone until a new ipad is released. Anyone else haveing these problems?
Nope, the wifi is still the same on mine and if you've ever played with a macbook you should now that these things can get quite hot without getting near to overheating at all. The ipad is a bit hot but really far from those temperatures and in no way the cause of stuterring or lag.
Yeah i have experiance with several laptops macbooks kindle fire, nook etc..but none put off as much heat as the ipad 3, well maybe the dell/alienware laptop..it does get pretty hot..but the digital thermometer read 113 degrees on the back..my ipad 2 would stay in the low to mid ninties during long sessions.. Just left the apple forums and glad to see i am not the only one that noticed the problems. :S Hope its just a defective battery overheating, or something simple.
Well mine is around 90 degrees when running intensive games (my macbook can heat up to 190) so maybe i don't feel a thing anymore : )
i doubt 190 degrees while holding it, maybe internals like the cpu etc.. due to the fact that 125 degrees over several minutes will burn you and 125 degree water will scald the skin :S 135 degree water or heated air will give you 3rd degree burns in 15 seconds...1 second 156 degrees give or take
Well i can't hold my macbook on my lap when it's running games, it's that hot... But if you look around the internet you'll see that 170-190 is really possible: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=395061 Now of course it's internal because the sensor are in the mac but the difference is that my ipad doesn't burn my hand at least I saw that people had problems with their ipad running way too hot and the wifi was weak but they returned it to apple and it seems fine for them now.
yeah i recieved several others messages with overheating issues...seems to be when brightness is set to 100 percent and you do long term online games...cod etc...there was even a report of a child burning his hand... apple is investigating the problems... whats going to happen when the cpu/gpu is running native retina display apps... spontaneous combustion? lol joking....break out the marshmellows Maybe apple will have alot more problems and they finally go with a a6 processer.. and more storage..ipad 4 by next summer im sure, they have to keep up with the jones's..fingers crossed. I think I will keep it for now... I can always flip it over and cook me some pancakes when i get hungry
I can confirm that Asphalt 6 got a bit stuttery. It looks great on iPad 3 (more detailled) but it doesn't run as smooth as on iPad 2. Gameloft quote: All this is true but the framerate is not so good. Still playable of course. We tried local multiplayer (bluetooth) and the sync connections works flawless (about one hour with iPad 2+3). Real Racing 2 runs smoother but there is not so much movement in the gameplay. (RR2 is slower altogether so to say.) Let's hope that they update Asphalt. Gameloft's iPad-3-update for the racer was on March 15th so they had no new iPad for testing. I am sure they'll care about. Yes. Indeed. I wish somebody would update the first posting with the overview. The iTunes' "software for the new iPad"-category isn't up to date as well…
Our 10 Pin Shuffle games have been updated to include full iPad Retina Display support. The updates have just been approved by Apple and are available for download in the App Store. They're all Universal Apps so if you buy the full version then you can install it on your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad without paying twice. 10 Pin Shuffle 10 Pin Shuffle Lite (Free!) Enjoy!
Finally got approved! Beast Boxing 3D v1.3.1 now supports the new Retina iPad, please do add it to your list. It makes a huge difference in the fighting scenes, but I kept the UI graphics as-is to prevent increasing the amount of disk space it takes up, and keep it viable for OTA downloads.
Lead Wars has just been updated adding full iPad Retina Display support! TA Thread: http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=73684 iTunes link: http://itunes.apple.com/app/lead-wars/id393340337?mt=8
That is somewhat correct. Retina is actually enabled throughout, but the game assets were created in 2010, pre-iPad. So the highest I had anything was 1024x1024, and the artist has moved on to create Hawken, so I likely won't be able to get any work out of him anytime soon. Oh, and certain art assets such as the backgrounds and crowd characters are intentionally blurred in order to create some depth of field. I sharpened them up a little, but the effect just becomes more obvious now because of that original 2010 design for 480x320. If we ever do a sequel, we will definitely design it differently given the resolutions available today.
