Sounds cool - what engine were you guys using before? I just heard about Shiva and was going to look into it (I've been playing around with Unity and Flash lately).

    Necronomicon Update

FYI: I'm told the Necronomicon port to a new 3D game-engine is nearing completion, which is going to let me move forward with more cards and promised expansions once its out and everyone's updated, there will also be an HD version for the iPad. Right now my hands are still tied, and I can't add any new cards or game enhancements until the port is finished. Having the game-engine you used for development go out of business and become unsustainable has been a real headache in terms of not being able to add anything. I apologize for that, but it's something I have no control over.

But in the meantime...I have another, loosely-related Lovecraft project (more like an experiment, really) which ties into the premise of the Necronomicon Horror, and I'd like to have some fans of H.P. Lovecraft beta test if you're interested --

Has anyone played any Gamebook Adventures? Fighting Fantasy? Choose-Your-Own Adventures? Anchorhead? The Lurking Horror? Infocom interactive fiction? Pen and Paper "Call of Cthulhu" scenarios?

If so, then this might be right up your alley...

Otherwise, I'll keep you guys updated on developments as soon as I have something noteworthy to report.

    Thanks,
    Dustin Neff

Glad to see an update - I was just thinking about Necronomicon a few days ago and wondering about its progress. I'd offer to help beta test your other game, but I'm so busy now trying to get my own game started up that I just don't have free time.

  7. Thanks I've got enough testers for now, you'll be hearing more from us pretty soon on these various projects, good luck with your own game and I'll look forward to hearing about that too! - Dustin

Also, how is the Necronomicon port going? It's been a quiet few weeks since the last update; hope all is going well! Thanks.

    soon

hi there : ) sorry for the delay,
about the Necronomicon: we're making last changes. Porting is going well, no any issues. Maybe a week and it will be submitted ; ) We're trying to keep going also retina-version development and ipad, so pretty possible all of it will come live at once in near week or two.

That's good. I hope we do actually see it in the App Store in the next 2-3 weeks and there are no unforeseen problems.

Very cool - saw Nec. in my list of previously played games and was wondering how the port was coming. Looking forward to playing the new version.

  18. Hi, there! The Unnamed is still a speculative project in early beta, and I haven't yet made a decision to go forward with it. It represents a huge amount of writing and coding for one person, and we're still probably a few months off from having an open-source engine which can be used to publish a game of this type on iOS devices for the App Store.

An interactive fiction/role-playing hybrid is something I'm definitely interested in doing at some point, especially in a Lovecraftian scenario.

BTW, if anyone cares to try out interactive fiction on your iOS or iPad do a search for "iFrotz" and download it, it's free, and the author has just made a number of improvements so it handles the display of graphics better on the iPad. It's pretty cool to have an interactive story to play on your iPad, and if these things got more popular I believe it could touch-off a lot of cool new games to try out.

In other news we hope to have a new version of Necronomicon finished soon, we're working on it as much as we can. Thanks!

I keep hoping gamebooks and interactive fiction projects really take off on the app store. I think it's a nice change of pace from the trend of narrative-barren action games getting pumped out with ever-increasing frequency these days...

So I totally encourage you to go ahead with that project, Dustin. ;) You could have a hand in shifting the dominant paradigm and that would lead to improving the minds of many young people, which could in turn someday save the world from total destruction.

So, I guess what I'm saying in essence is, it's up to you to put out The Unnamed and save the world. That's all. :)

Heh, as I was reading this, I was thinking about iFrotz - was going to ask why not just use that? But apparently you already found it. :) So does it not cover everything you need? iFrotz was one of the first "games" I got for my iphone almost 3 years ago. I don't play it anymore, mostly cuz of all the other games out there as well as the Fighting Fantasy and Gamebook Adventure apps, but it's still pretty cool in its own right.
