Yeah, I know how dangerous it is to make a thread about J-anything around the internet. But I'm hoping the TA members are intelligent enough to avoid posting in here if they don't like the genre (and obviously, those that do can post away). I didn't want to make an 'RPG general thread' because then there would probably be conflict between J and WRPGs, and that's how flame wars start. Anyone's welcome to make a WRPG thread if they want, obviously.

Anyway, I didn't see a thread like this in the lounge anywhere else, so I don't see any harm in making a general discussion thread for JRPGs.

SO. I guess I'll start with probably the most obvious question: what's your favourite(s) and why?

I know FF gets a lot of stick sometimes, but FFXIII seemed to get so much it was actually a bit worrying. I haven't played it myself, so I've wondered why people hated it so much.

I like XIII. It is pretty linear, but the parts that were cut are the boring parts where you talk to villagers and each one says the exact same thing but in a slightly different way. All that's left is some pretty damn good FF action that somehow feels like the combat we know and love but also manages to seem totally new at the same time.

Yeah, I heard that the game takes about 20 hours to open up, and a lot of people simply don't have the patience for that much time, I guess.

The World Ends With You is hands down the best RPG I've ever played. This game has the best combat, risk-reward mechanics, customization, visual style, story, music, in a game of this genre. Square-Enix really raised the bar insanely high for other JRPGs.

Chrono Trigger and the recent Mario and Luigi Inside Bowser's Story are also gems. I also love the Shin Megami Tensei games because of their weird aesthetics and mature plots packed with metaphors and stuff that makes you think.

I don't own a DS myself, but I've heard highly of The World Ends With You. If I do get one in the future, that's one I'm sure to at least check out.

Funny you should mention those two, since at the moment I'm currently playing through both Chrono Trigger and Persona 2 (Innocent Sin). I'm spending more time on Persona though, I love the plot and characters (although what sort of guy nicknames themselves Michelle?).

Definitely man, TWEWY is undoubtedly the best Nintendo DS game, and I'd go as far as calling it the best portable game of all time; it just blew me away. Everything about it is excellent, but the best part, and what should be the most important too, is that the gameplay is genious. It's extremely challenging, it requires a lot of skill, and once you master it, you can do some amazing stuff.

This is the stuff of the legends.

Yeah, well I've been meaning to get a handheld console for my RPG needs since the iDevice still pretty much sucks in the RPG department. The problem is, I'm not sure if I want a DS or a PSP (I can only afford one). I know the DS has a greater library of JRPGs, but the PSP has those few titles which I do really want to play (Persona 3, Sora no Kiseki, FFT, Valkyrie Profile, etc.). Any thoughts?

PSP RPGs are mostly ports at the moment, but there are a bunch on the way too, including the ever-popular Kingdom Hearts. I thought TWEWY sucked. It was like a bunch of adults thought it'd make them cool by creating a totally "hip" and "street" game. Ended up looking childish and corny like some 80s McDonalds advert.

Edit: found this (incomplete) list of RPGs on PSP:

    Crimson Gem Saga
    Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
    Disgaea 2 Dark Hero Days
    Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
    Final Fantasy Anniversary Edition
    Final Fantasy II Anniversary Edition
Final Fantasy Tactics War of The Lions
    Hexyz Force
    Lunar: Silver Star Harmony
    Persona PSP
    Phantasy Star Portable
    Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth
X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse

    Upcoming (apparently):

    .hack//LINK
Eiyuu Densetsu: Sora no Kiseki FC
Eiyuu Densetsu: Sora no Kiseki SC
Eiyuu Densetsu: Sora no Kiseki the Third
    Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
    Persona 3 P
    Phantasy Star Portable 2
    Valkyria Chronicles 2
    Ys I & II Chronicles
    Ys Seven
    Ys: The Oath in Felghana

I'd recommend you to buy the DS. Its library of RPG is unmatched, specially this generation. Like I said, The World Ends With You is brilliant, plus there's the following games:

And dozens of other really great RPGs.

I don't mind that they're ports, and that list is bigger than I thought it would be. Although some of those are available on the DS as well and some I'm not remotely interested in. Though the ones I'm most interested in are Sora no Kiseki, the Ys games (I love Falcom games) and Persona 3. Granted though that I there are also titles I really want to play on the DS, like Golden Sun 3, and it does have a mahoosive library (I found a list of both localised and unlocalised DS RPGs, and it was just ridiculous).

Final Fantasy I, III, VII, X, Crisis Core
    Sword of Mana
    Earthbound
Super Mario RPG (it was made by Square)
Rogue Galaxy (even though I'm stuck on one stupid boss...)
Chaos Rings (yes, it was that good).

And while we're on the subject, can someone help me understand what's going on in Chrono Trigger? When my friend gave me his SNES, it came with it, but no instructions, and there's absolutely no tutorial in the game. Plus, it's active-time battle, so I don't have the time to try to figure it out. I just have no idea how to fight, why everyone's moving around, etc.

    EDIT: I forgot a couple:

Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga (best in the series, followed closely by Bowser's Inside Story, then a bit further by Partners in Time)
The World Ends With You (how did I forget that...)
Dissidia: Final Fantasy (if you want to count that)

I know I've played more than that, but I'm just drawing a blank right now.

And Omega, what's the second set of screens? It looks like a pretty cool game, but I don't recognize it at all.

Isn't Dissidia a fighting game? I don't know an awful lot about it other than the characters, so I don't know.

Oh, and here's a walkthrough to Chrono Trigger, but more specifically there's quite a detailed guide to the combat before the actual walkthrough, which should help you. Btw, there is kind of a tutorial in the game, but it's missable. At the beginning if you go to the mayor's house and go upstairs there will be several people who you can talk to and they'll tell you about the various aspects of combat among other things.

I also don't recognise Omega's second set of screens either, it looks kinda like a Dragon Quest game. Unfortunately the other sets of screens don't really interest me that much.

Thanks a lot man, I've been wanting to get into the game since everyone seems to like it, but I could never understand what was going on. I went straight to the fair and faught the giant robot, but I more or less just guessed what to do. And I just lost it from there.

Dissidia is more or less a fighting game, but it's almost more of an RPG than a fighter, since there's a ton of leveling up to do, equipment to obtain, extras to buy, etc. Plus, there's a mode where you can give your character commands and let them fight, but it's pretty boring.

Also, I couldn't care less about the last set of screens, but Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story is a really good game. If I ever get around to finishing Superstar Saga and Partners in Time (both of which I'm really close to beating), I think I'll pick it up. I rented it to see how it was, and it was actually really good though.

That would be Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey. It's a really excellent RPG. Like I said, I love the MegaTen franchise a lot because it has completely f'd up art direction and plots that revolve around God, demons, and humanity. Great stuff.

Oh, well it looks interesting, although personally I think I would prefer Persona 3 on the PSP (playing through Persona 2 at the moment, it's awesome).
