THIS is actually THE POINT of the whole thing.

Apple has potential, but they want to suck our blood drop by drop.

Wouldn't it be nice if they made effort to offer us a better iPhone?

If they only concentrated theyr efforts in improving their already existing products...

But I understand... money is money,

Yeah. I wish they had just made a super beefed up iPhone or iPod Touch with loads of new features. Regardless of the price, I'd buy it :D

No one complains when laptops are released with different sized monitors...

Some of you are perhaps being a little too hard on Apple.

That's because laptops makes sense. :)

No, really... iPhone is for calling and playing.
    iPod is for playing.
MacBook and laptops in general are for working.

    iPad is an ebook reader.

iPad doesn't do anything that my iPhone and MacBook can't do.
I have no reason to buy it.

75 millions people own an iPhone. 95% (?) of them own a laptop as well.

Buying it would be a redundancy.

And it's for that reason that I'm not getting it. They say it's a revolutionary browser, the best in the business, and yet it doesn't support something that many smartphones have had for years? Pffffft.

Apple is selling illusions, we all should know that.

Face the truth: no Flash = no free flash games.

I'm getting one. Aiming for the 32GB 3G model. Already squirreled away $300 towards one.

Here's why I want one: At home I mainly use a loaded Macbook Pro I bought back in '07. Before that my main PC was a Mac Mini I bought on a lark to see what all this Mac OS X fuss was about. I travel a LOT - and I mean a LOT - not just between states but between continents. Dragging that MBP around gets tiresome. When I'm back at home base, I use my iPhone 3GS to remote into the MBP via VNC for various things I might need to do on my MBP while keeping lite.
Now, since it's going to be a given that a custom VNC app will be released for this, there's no longer any need to cart around the MBP when I need to get serious work done. I just carry the "remote" iPad around with me.
Very doubtful I'm going to be playing many games on that 1.5lbs pad when my light iPhone works just fine for that, but it's always an option.
So now I can lighten my load to just an iPhone and 1.5Lbs iPad. No need for a brick, spare battery, etc. One iPod/iPad sync cable to rule them all! (so far...haven't seen the deets on that).
Maybe toss my 2nd gen Apple BT keyboard in the suitcase.
Other than that I'm set. The real beotch is going to be finding PAYG mini-SIMs for Europe, the Balkans, Africa, and the big sandbox in the ME.

But I'm curious...just how the hell does one slap iWork documents on the thing? Can it download from the browser now? Or does one have to "sync" it?
Crap, just got home from work, time to do some reading.

    Two things.

1: When a new laptop version is released, it also has upgraded processor, memory, storage, etc. It's not just a bigger screen.

2: People expect more from Apple, and when they don't deliver (and imo they didn't with the iPad), there's going to be criticism. Steve Jobs said the iPad is better than a laptop and better than a netbook-yet nothing in the iPad proves him right.

I'm definitely going to get an iPad. I'm actually glad it's running an improved iPhone OS rather than a dumbed down OS X 10.6, especially because I'll be able to install iWork on it.

    Yeah, I have.

    They too are underwhelmed.

And, btw...not all of us here are tech geeks. Quite a great number of us are, in fact, part of that mass sea of consumers known as the "mainstream audience".

It's not a "bad" product. It will fill a niche. IMHO, though, that niche will not be a substantial one, and thus will not mark this product as any sort of "revolution".

Except those different sized laptops aren't announced as the second coming.

Remember, iPad isn't just a supersized iPod touch. It's REVOLUTIONARY and MAGICAL!

Not always. Sony offers laptops with the same specs but in different sizes.

The iPad is bigger than an iPod, but smaller than a laptop. That might be what he was referencing. If you need something that's more portable than a laptop, but bigger than an iPod, the iPad would be a good buy.

Lol. Yeah, Apple does go overkill with their marketing sometimes, but I don't think doing that takes away from the quality of their products.

I will be getting one for sure. My daughter loved my IPod Touch and loves my IPhone. She is really going to love this. Her games will be soo much more fun. And they are mostly learning games. She will have a blast for sure. And I will be using it non-stop for web browsing I am sure. It looks like its going to be alot of fun.

We just recorded a really great podcast that I'm editing now with four major iPhone developers who are all very excited for the iPad. I look forward to spiffyone's novella of a rebuttal in the comments.
