There are similar possibilities on the iPhone... they haven't happened. Folders? Dream on! That basically narrows it down to Photoshop as far as your post is concerned. Given that we don't have access to a folder system, it wouldn't even be used to it's full potential. It'd be some freaky, self contained Photoshop-lite thing... with no multi-tasking. Having a slightly bigger screen doesn't open up as many possibilities as some people would like to think. All it really does it make existing possibilities a little easier to work with.
That part in bold is pretty much what I think the possibilities amount to. It will be better at some things due to screen size and the faster (for now) processor (I fully expect the next iPhone/touch update to use a similar processor), but it won't be all that it could've been as a product because, in reality, it really simply is a giant iPod touch. It leans more toward iPod territory than it does Macbook territory, and I'd expect, as a consumer, for the "middle ground" that this is touted as to be an actual middle ground rather than leaning more in one direction. I was expecting a giant iPod touch, frankly. That's why I didn't get my hopes up. That it turned out to be exactly that is why I don't think it revolutionary, and think it will niche in terms of market impact. Perhaps it if truly was a "middle ground" product I would think differently. What little hope I had for it was the whisper of a thought that maybe, just maybe, Apple would've gone with a dual core Atom or something along those lines, and upgraded the iPhone OS based OS to handle things like multitasking. Put it on even keel with the netbooks in terms of ability to handle tasks and usefulness, but also give it the elegant design and user experience that it has now and which was carried over from iPhone/touch. I wasn't expecting Leopard on this thing. I was fully expecting an iPhone OS based operating system. But I was also expecting it to be so vast an upgrade to that base that it would be seen as a very different product and not just an iPod touch for giants.
The amazing Andy Ihnatko's impressions: http://www.suntimes.com/technology/ihnatko/2017907,ihnatko-ipad-hands-on-012810.article This is my favourite part; I couldn't agree more. All of you are forming opinions on a device you've never even laid your hands on. Everyone who has come out have nothing but overwhelmingly positive impressions of the iPad. And they're echoeing Andy's aforementioned quote, you really have to put your hands on one to know, why.
Part in bold is not entirely true. There are hands on that range in to the "meh" territory, and some that go into the "so what?" territory. Most are in the "pretty good, but not revolutionary" territory. At the end of the day, though, it will be up to the general consumer market to decide. And, IMHO,Brier Dudley of the Seattle Times hits closer to what that potential market might be when he states: source: Brier Dudley's Seattle Times blog Again, IMHO there's a market...but it won't be as substantial a market as for Apple's other devices (sans AppleTV, which, honestly, is completely the fault of Apple letting the product down and not the other way around).
Actually, I did have an iPad hands on...wow that sounds awful. The iPad definitely has the wow factor. It's cool, light and very easy to navigate even for non-iPhone/Touch users. I did chat with a few reporter friends of mine about their impressions and they all had the same initial reactions. But, and I heard this over and over, once you're over the wow factor and get down to it, the iPad isn't very cost effective when compared to the iPhone at the moment based on the functionality. The iPad has potential though, and I can see people out in the field using this for presentations and physicians using this for providing patient care. The iPhone is better in some cases on the business front because the camera allows for barcode reading. But that potential of the iPad is only as good as the apps, which we should see more of in a few months. So, really, that's the bottom line for the iPad or any device that comes out. If you're buying this strictly for games, most media and analysts see the iPad as ideal...just don't expect console quality or anything significantly different at least in the near term. Also of note, someone mentioned a new tablet with the Android OS coming out in the next quarter or two that will have the same price as the iPad. If anything, this will make it all very interesting.

Sorry, given today's news that the iPad is the most quickly adopted non-phone consumer electronics device in history, I just had to look back on what our resident Nostradamuses had to say about the device.
I admit my view on the iPad has turned around from the blazing scorn I probably had when it was first announced.
I don't think I was too impressed either. I'm still not, and I've spent a good amount of time playing about with them. I just can't see it as a necessity, it's something I'd only buy if I had spare money to throw about on extra gadgets I didn't really need. Nice to see it's doing well though.
You were right and (almost) everyone else was wrong. and it didn't even take the 2 years you predicted! I love my iPad. It's interesting to read the early iPad reactions in this forum.
I bought one a few days ago and I don't really care for it. To me, its to big and heavy to be comfortable in your hand for extended periods of time. That being said, I can see the appeal of the iPad for those who don't own an iPhone.
Give it some time. When I first got my iPad I thought it was big and heavy too, but after a while I got used to it. Doesn't seem all that heavy now...
Same here, it's a luxury item that I really don't need but would end up getting if I had spare cash or saw a defining feature in the next iteration.
I thought I didn't need one but I was wrong. Now I'm more inclined to check emails, surf net, read ebooks, make plans, draft diagrams, play 'We' games, board games, TDs etc etc on the go because of the big screen. No more clicking on the wrong things and squinting my eyes. Lovely.
