An absolute steal. Echoseven Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze Jul 19, 2011 6,091 270 83 The red Skittle #12 Echoseven, Aug 17, 2015 Magic of press! metalcasket Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze May 24, 2010 11,065 1,342 113 Deepest Circle, Hel #13 metalcasket, Aug 17, 2015 You know a game is great when you're stuck on a puzzle for 5 days and yet don't have the heart to say "**** it" and delete the game, but rather still open it up whenever you have a chance and waste an entire battery charge on a single puzzle. That's exactly how I feel about The Guides. No matter how much I hate a puzzle, the minute I solve it, I exclaim "This is the greatest game in the world". While The Guides may have a lot in common with modern classics such as Mikengreg's TouchTone or Blackbar (yes, shamelessly stealing the mentions from The Guides' Twitter account), what separates it from the pack is that you just can't get comfortable with the puzzles no matter what (in the best way possible). Not only does the difficulty ramp up gently, the thing with The Guides is that every puzzle differs. Solved a puzzle? Does the next one look familiar to the one before it? Easy, right? Nope! It has a COMPLETELY different solution. I'm not gonna get into too much detail about the types of puzzles, solutions and mechanisms that help you solve the puzzles in The Guides, because the sheer magic of the game lies in the fact that you're just thrown into the game and there's literally no hand-holding other than a couple of nudges here and there if you're looking in the right place. I know I'm being completely vague and normally my posts have the most depth when it comes to talking about gameplay, but believe me when I say that you'll appreciate the fact that I'm not spoiling the game for you in any way. While I'm personally guilty of asking for a little nudge here and there (thanks Echoseven!), believe me when I say that this is a game you're not going to want a guide/walkthrough for. In fact, that will totally ruin the game for you. The Guides isn't a game you're done with in 5 minutes. It's one that you get nice and cozy with under your bedsheets, with your earphones in. Sure, you could play this on the crapper, on the bus or wherever...but the beauty of the game comes from making it an experience. If you put the effort into solving the game's genius puzzles and dedicate all of your attention to the game by looking at every page (puzzle) over and over, touching/poking everything in sight, listening to audio cues and by just taking things nice and slow, I promise you that this is a game you'll never ever want to get rid of. As far as the audiovisual packaging of the game is concerned, every nook and cranny of the game is beautifully designed so that nothing gets in the way of the puzzles and it would honestly be useless to describe the visuals since every puzzle is practically a game of its own. It's just a beautiful game with a very subtle, haunting soundtrack, wrapped in the perfect just-over-30 MB-INSTALLED package. Having just bought the compendium, I was honestly looking to alter my post quite a bit, but I'm quite shocked at how in-depth it is. This, just like the game, isn't something to skim over and I'm certainly not going to write about it without having spent some quality time with it. Even with my very short time with it, I highly recommend you pick it up along with The Guides. Not only does it point you in the right direction with some puzzles, it also appears to have some puzzles of its own. It's very well-written and gives The Guides some incredible depth. It's also just a 10 MB download. If you've read this far, I recommend you stop doing whatever you're doing, take 2 and a half minutes to go to the App Store, download both The Guides and The Guides Compendium over 3G for 2 bucks (while The Guides is on sale) and join this thread. There's no chance in hell you'll regret it. Vovin ð® Spam Police ð Nov 28, 2009 6,514 3 38 Germany #14 Vovin, Aug 17, 2015 Last edited: Aug 17, 2015 All this and more. This game is awesome, how everything fits together. Fans of stuff like Year Walk, Device 6 and God Of Blades won't be disappointed. This is also witchcraft! How did they get such a HUGE amount of gameplay into 30mb? TheGreatEscaper Well-Known Member Oct 10, 2014 1,025 22 38 #15 TheGreatEscaper, Aug 17, 2015 Stuck on 1-25 and 2-8... the game is certainly nice so far but I can't say I'm loving it as much as MetalCasket. It feels a little... dry? But then again, having had a little experience with cryptography before I probably don't speak for the majority of the population. I'm sure if the whole decoding concept was new to me this would feel very fresh and unique. Back2funk Well-Known Member Mar 3, 2010 316 0 16 England #16 Back2funk, Aug 17, 2015 Does this game rely much on the audio queues? I only ask as I tend to play games with no audio.
