Since we all know that even after the "stability update" SimCity crashes once your city gets too big, I started to play around with small cities and I kind of made a game out of it.

How many people can you get on an 8x8 square?
All zones, utilities, landfills, etc must be located in an 8x8 grid.
Roads can go out of the square - like you could completely surround your 8x8 grid with a road.

SimCity ran smooth and fast while I did this - to small to crash! It's nice, because you can play a quick 10-20min game.

Here's my attempt (cleverly named Sixtyfourpolis with Mayor I. M. Square):

I've never had one issue with my cities, and they get quite big.

Thanks! Took me 5 years game time (started 2000 so I could have wind power.) I also started with $50000, no taxes and enabled everything so that people would move in.

I could probably fit more, but my residential zone is only 4x4.

    Let's see some tiny cities!

definitely gonna make on. I got tired of SimCity being buggy and no one taking the transport. this challenge gives me a reason to try the game once more! ...that and that fact that is was $10.

Power stations and garbage dumps are becoming a real problem.

Did you keep those thing inside the 8x8 square?

Yup - all in an 8x8.

What you see in my screen grab above is all the land I worked with. I went with seaport as most of my industrial, a small high density commercial area, 2x2 landfill, 4x4 residential, 4 windmills, 1 water tower and the rest as parks surrounding the residential to bring up property values and reduce pollution.

I figured if the land values were higher, I'd get taller buildings. Average was the best land value I got, though. I'm gonna try again with a slightly different layout - see if I can beat 10,512. ;)

I take your 8x8 challenge and shall report on my success or failure tomorrow. Did you manipulate taxes at all?

I set all my taxes to zero to bring in people. Turns out it doesn't cost much to run a city on an 8x8 grid - you can loose money for a long time before you go under.

my goal is trying to enact all the ordinances... i set taxes to 5% and i managed to have more Commercial than Industrial, which is nice..

i didn't have to worry about landfills because of the trash ordinances
