Well damn, that's a really nice list of dungeoncrawlers! I remember many of the Amiga ones, owned a lot of them. Xenomorph was a pretty cool sci-fi one. I still say captive was one of the best sci-fi ones on Amiga. Infestation was cool too, but was not grid based.

In the interest of full disclosure I downloaded four if the iOS ones on the list.

I will also be downloading descend shortly. It says it's for iPhone, how does it look on the iPad?

    100% with you on that.
It is one of the old school "features" that really should have stayed way back in the past.
imho it proudly sits alongside the lack of an automap as simply a frustrating piece of rpg gaming history.

Hmm... now there we'll have to agree to disagree :)

I've always disliked automaps. I think they take a lot of the immersion away.

Other way around, having to map on paper reduces immersion for me.
More important: it's bad game design. Even more so on a mobile platform. On a PC, I can run a mapping program on a second screen; or have pen & graphpaper on my desk. With my iPad on the couch or in bed, not so much.

Hunger: If done well, it's a good mechanic. Only I've never seen that. It's always a nuisance, not a meaningful element of the game world.
Good: having to go hunt or starve in a survival game, where food is scarce.
Bad: Having to remember to eat a ration after resting, when you have hundreds of them. That's just meaningless and annoying.

That said, fingers crossed Deep Paths has a good automap, and no hunger ;)

Personally, I've never liked managing hunger in dungeon crawlers. There's already enough puzzles and monsters standing in your way to begin with. Having to stay alive based on finding food just seems like overkill.

Why was 'The Deep Paths' pulled from the U.S. App store? Does anyone know? Never mind, I did some reading on here and found out why.

I played Undercroft, I thought it was a great game for that time period!

I enjoyed Legend of Grimrock.I didn't have a problem with the hunger aspect,I could take it or leave it. I liked the fishing you had in Coldfire Keep, but again, the hunger issue isn't a necessary component of a game for me to enjoy it.

I wish we could see more of these games come to iOS as well. I simply love these kinds of games,I'm an older gamer..And yes, I think these games are excellent for the touch screen!

I noticed as far back as 'Descend' that you had a system of using landmarks as well as the compass, to get a bearing on where we are in-game. I think your system works wonderfully well, Steve. And in 'Descend' it was a bit different from having a map. Loved 'Coldfire Keep', by the way! :)
