I have resisted this thread as long as I could, but... I'm so weak... @ GameLvnGurl - If it's a minority, you and I are at least two of its members. If Apple released an 8X11 iPad I would buy it in a SECOND. I just moved again, (CT to ME) and my graphic novels KILL me every time I have to move them. The weight, attempting to protect from damage... ugh. I'm not even a collector, so I don't so much care about the value of them, but more about preserving them for reading. If I could have them all in the Cloud, and on an external harddrive, and then on a big ol' iPad... oh man, would that work. @ All - As for what I read, it looks like it's mostly been covered: Lots of Brits (Too many to list. Not sure why, but I have a PRONOUNCED affinity for British artists/musicians/writers, including prose, poetry, comics, lyrics) Some Marvel (Sucker for the Max/Punisher stuff, etc.) Lots of DC/Vertigo stuff (Gaiman, Batman? Uhm, YEAH.) LOTS of Indie stuff in general. I tend to gravitate toward authors/writers, and characters (Constantine) more than publishers, for example Ennis, Willingham, etc. @ Coledaddy - My wallet hates you. That is all. DBC
NICE! Seriously, comics/graphic novels are an even bigger cash drain for me compared to Apps... I used to hang out in a few online comic forums but it got a bit too expensive... DBC
This is totally me. It's why I switched to all digital, and why now I just do Marvel Unlimited (DC, catch up!) I used to just flip stuff all the time because I just want the stories. It is a little rough on the iPad mini, but I have a nice iMac at home if I want big, beautiful pages.
Yup. Last month when I went nutso with my budget for the month, I thought it was due to my gaming/apps purchase. But, a deeper look revealed that I was buying tons of marked down weekly specials on the Comixology app. I've been a "good boy" this month, so far...
Sorry dude. What's that saying...oh, here it is: If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you? Nietzsche
@ Jerutix - Yeah, if Apple gave me a way to read comics the way I read them, like say in bed before turning in, or on a big fat couch in front of a fire, I would likely buy the product as a dedicated reader, without any concern for or interest other available Apps... Hopefully someday. @ ColeDaddy - I think that one of the happiest days of my life was the day I was old enough to discover that I didn't care how it "appeared" to people upon finding out I read comics... it mattered more the way it felt to me. Of course, people like Gaiman really helped comic "geeks" like me by significantly legitimizing the art. I read plenty of stuff, classic lit, scholarly publications like journals (mostly due to my need to stay current clinically), contemporary fiction, but there is something about experiencing a story told via words and images that is exceptionally rewarding... Dropping $25.00 for a graphic novel is much, MUCH easier than it probably should be... DBC
I have a hard time finding ones without supers or Supercommandos. Heck the only one I saw was a US Army propoganda comic.
I used to love the b&w Commando comics from UK, also the other b&w comics from UK. Jack Kirby's The Losers was good too (featured in Our Fighting Forces). I also have a sweet spot for Unknown Soldier & Sgt Rock. There was a Marvel comic series called The NAM, which I haven't read completely, but it was good fun. Garth Ennis' Adventures in the Rifle Brigade is something good I read from the recent era.
Wasn't sure if I was confident that my answer would qualify, but yep, Unknown Soldier, Sgt. Rock, ANYTHING by Ennis... so yes, I am apparently a fan of War Comics. Not sure if you've seen the re-imagining of "The Losers" under the DC imprint "Vertigo," but I enjoyed it! DBC
I haven't read vertigo's The Losers, but I've watched the film. Thought it was decent. I loved Ennis' Unknown Soldier.. I'd realy like to see more of Unknown Soldier based in WW2 or the Cold war era. Never read Haunted Tank, I will try getting my hands on it. Anyone familiar with the manga "Apocalypse Meow", it's based in Vietnam & it's really fun & highly recommended.
Ah yes... "The Film." Check out the comic. I would LOVE to see a run of 100 or so issues of Unknown Soldier... Oh, it might be a bit of a stretch, but some of the Punisher stuff gets a little war-ish. Just throwing it out there. DBC
Actually, the Comixology app takes care of this issue and makes up the smaller real estate allowing readers to optimize their reading experience using their GuidedView technology. I've seen other comic apps* try to mimic their tech, but Comixology's is by far the best implementation of this particular algorithm. *In fact, I used to buy comics from a pretty big independent company. The comics were pretty good, but the inadequate software was such a distraction, I deleted both app and comics. Bummer, too, because I really liked the handful of books I was buying on a regular basis. Unfortunately, Comixology doesn't carry their books in their app, since the former created their own standalone app. I suggested they partner with Comixology as most of the major companies have done, but all I got were crickets chirping in the distance.
I have the app on my ipod but I don't really care for guided veiw. I like to look at a whole page then follow panels. Which is why I want such a large dimension tablet. Read all of Y:The Last Man last week courtesy of my public library, gonna try to get caught up on Unwritten and Fables through them too.
Comixology is having a monstrous sale on all Godzilla titles so if you haven't read at least Half Century War you should spend the $5.

Great review, dude! You've definitely piqued my interest. One of the biggest challenges I feel reading most older material is that a lot of it doesn't read well today...at least for me. I grew up loving and reading the classic and iconic Silver and Bronze Age books...most of them were copies passed down from my older brother and future brother in law. However, when I read them today, with the exception of the nostalgic high I receive, the initial excitement devolves into one of just trudging onward as reading the material feels so outdated to the point of being a distraction. Unfortunately, this has been par for the course for many of my strolls down Memory Lane, of late. I've always been intrigued by Steranko's artwork, but how does the writing hold out?
the writing in the collection is initially by Stan lee, then Roy Thomas before steranko took over. It holds up well in my opinion
Hey gang, not sure if anyone noticed or is interested, but I just found this game yesterday, "Soul Gambler." It's basically a comic "build you own adventure" type game centered around a retelling of Goethe's "Faust." Anyhoo, I am LOVING it, so I figured I'd share!
