I should have mentioned that there will be a even harder mode for people who want an even greater challenge. Thanks for the suggestion.
Glad to finally see some positivity in this thread. With all the whinging about the double jump earlier it probably acted as a deterrent to buyers when the problem hardly sours the experience. Love the Game Boy mock up. Even at the moment, given the orientation and graphic style, it makes the iPhone feel like some Game Boy Color from the future.
I've been enjoying the game a lot, but like many others, I've had a few problems. People have already talked a lot about the controls and double jumping issues though, so I'll talk about something else: there are certain situations where you'll die for odd reasons. I've made an image to explain this: The left and right parts of the images are two different situations. The red is the blocks, the blue is a falling block, and the x is the player, with the arrow indicating how the player is moving. In the left situation, the player will die for no clear reason due to block they're standing on being a few pixels higher than the block they're moving to. In the right situation, the player will be crushed on the corner of the red block, even makes no sense for the blue block to crush them at that point. Adding on to this, it feels like there's too much of a push down when you hit a block from the bottom, but that's probably just me being bitter. I'm looking forward to the update, so please keep up the great work.
What a wonderful time to be alive! First League Of Evil and now The Blocks Cometh? Thanks for all your hard work and for such a great game, you guys rock! Can't wait for the updates.
As long as were using high quality pictures to show the bugs, i'll model mine. I could only figure out how to make it anything other than an attachment form though, but that the main bug that bothering me.
I did notice this one. v1.01 should fix the issue. if you do see it pop up in the update send an email with a screen shot (Power & Home button at the same time ). Cheers!
Unfortunately it has. The game sales are getting hurt by the negative reviews about the controls. At the end of the day it was our fault for not catching that bug (double jump) that most of the negativity centers around.
I figured out why blocks are sometimes misaligned with the grid. As the screen scrolls up, new blocks are simply place at the bottom of the screen if no other blocks are below them, so them get a bit staggered. This would be fine, but it causes the character to get stuck on visibly flat surfaces because one block is 1 pixel or so above another. I definitely think the collision detection needs to be updated a bit. Also, I have died on a few occasions because I would press one of the directional arrows, but when I let go, the characters kept moving and wouldn't stop until he hit a block, the side, or died. The game is still really fun, but these little issues just make what would be a very polished, professional game seem like a mediocre, unprofessional game. I personally couldn't make a game even close to this quality at this point, but I know you guys are capable to doing better because of what I've seen so far. I know you'll make me proud
I think this is all about the hit box detection and the very nature of the blocks falling randomly and creating different heights that are hard to notice. A few players have made mention that when they were running left or right their player would just stop as if hitting a wall. So that's caused by the player's hit box hitting a change in elevation and the game being very rigid about your character not being allowed to climb the incline. Sometimes the higher block is only a few pixels higher which we can't even see with all the fast action going on. The reason I bring that up is on the left situation it seems like the game is recognizing that the space you want to move to is valid (that is, it has enough space for the hitbox). As you move left you must pass below that overhang but the space from the bottom of the overhang to the top of the block you are standing on is slightly too small which forces the overhanging block to touch the hitbox and trigger a "crush" death. On the right I would assume that even though your character is in the "jump" animation the hitbox has made it above the edge of the red block. So visually you are still jumping but the hitbox says you were standing over the edge and got crushed. Of course I'm not the dev and though I tested both of those theories out in-game multiple times before posting it's just so hard to be definitive but hopefully that helps out a bit. I have no doubt Halfbot will get things sorted out but in the mean time "Mind Your Head!"
This thread has been buried back to the 5th page?! Well, I'm reviving just to brag about claiming 4th place on the all-time leaderboards. I'm hopelessly addicted to trying to beat my own high score and climbing the leaderboards.
My major problems with the controls (and this is going to sound like a stupid thing) is that I have big hands so it's really difficult and uncomfortable for me to hold the ipod in portrait mode for an extended period of time in the way that the game requires.
I have fairly large hands (not huge) and I have the same problem. I really need this game to be landscape. I can't really play it in it's current design.
I am currently loving this game right now. The controls really arent a bother just minor fixin thats it. Love the gameplay and unlocking of new characters. My favorite has been Agent so far hes a BEAST!
i know the game is purely vertical, but do you think a horizontal mode is possible? escape the falling blocks while getting as far to the right as possible....
i have a jailbroken ipod but i bought the game to support the developer. Keep up the good work and please have an update for us larger handed-folk. thanks!
Landscape mode! I have some pretty promising news for those of you that are dying for a Landscape mode. We did some testing on the weekend and it seems that this will be doable! Now I won't give you a 100% guarantee until we have it fully working . But rest assured we are working on it Also be on the lookout for a a quick patch to fix the Double Jump issue. We are just waiting for Apple to approve that update.
The update, and possible future updates sound great. I'm might stay up until 5 a.m. and see if I can win a code in your twitter compo. Those US times are harsh on my sleeping patterns.
