Heard a ton of great things about the board game and unfortunately on the flip side the drama around the digital version. Will wait for impressions but I’m definitely going to pick this one up if it’s a decent representation of the physical. Gwarmaxx Well-Known Member Feb 2, 2010 4,446 376 83 NCC 1701 #3 Gwarmaxx, Dec 4, 2019 i've tested it for months, but never fully liked it, too boring imho, and at the end of the game you never know why you won or lost, too many overwhelming factors to calculate... i prefer Among the Stars (to name something similar). macplash Well-Known Member Apr 17, 2014 2,645 1,103 113 Male 3D artist Munich, Germany #4 macplash, Dec 4, 2019 @Gwarmaxx any similarities with Galaxy Trucker? Which is my favorite board game turned into digital. Talbs Well-Known Member May 1, 2011 2,616 377 83 #5 Talbs, Dec 4, 2019 Not one but similar except for a space theme. chengchisang Well-Known Member May 25, 2018 119 31 28 #6 chengchisang, Dec 4, 2019 It is all of a sudden, would wait for more views then. I would rather have Scythe on mobile. kozz84 Well-Known Member Aug 27, 2012 140 21 18 #7 kozz84, Dec 4, 2019 Aside from the sci-fi theme, not really. First of all, it's mostly a card game. There is a board, but 80% of the game is in the cards; personally I don't like the board aspect of terraforming mars. Also it's an engine building game (similiar to Race for the Galaxy). macplash Well-Known Member Apr 17, 2014 2,645 1,103 113 Male 3D artist Munich, Germany #8 macplash, Dec 4, 2019 Thanks @Talbs and @kozz84 for clarifying. I’m gonna wait for some impressions even though it doesn’t feel like the right match for me. GT is a masterpiece, faster & smarter in gameplay, this one is, like i said, a bit boring, and specially the points assignement is too complex to follow during the entire game process, so you end up never understanding if you will win or lose (Among the Stars has similar mechanics but more friendly with points assignement). Ringerill Well-Known Member Dec 13, 2012 315 170 43 #10 Ringerill, Dec 5, 2019 The game really looked cool and interesting but I don't know now. Seems like a convoluted game, especially since I have found 4-5 tracker apps to help you deal with you cards, missions, ressources, etc. Maybe these app are totally useless but maybe they are indeed useful to keep track of everything you can or have to do. I have played a lot of "difficult" board games where you have to plan really ahead and have a big spreadsheet just to calculate the score at the end. It sure is not really family friendly but it's nice to rack your brain from time to time. In this case, the possibility to have AI players is nice for me because it's quite hard to find people motivated enough to play these games... I plan to try it out because the ideas and strategies seem to be quite enjoyable, even if a little bit complicated in the long run. I will be sure to come back and tell my opinion of the game chengchisang Well-Known Member May 25, 2018 119 31 28 #11 chengchisang, Dec 5, 2019 Looking forward to your thoughts and reviews. TIA. Ringerill Well-Known Member Dec 13, 2012 315 170 43 #12 Ringerill, Dec 5, 2019 I managed to do some runs and I haven't been disappointed at all, quite the opposite. It took 2-3 runs against an Easy AI to finally understand what is happening and what to do to earn points. Now I can steadily win against an Easy AI without thinking too much. First of all, I would recommend playing against an AI (or maybe even against yourself as a second player to try out different strategies). Also, take the "Standard Game" and not the "Corporate Era Rules" so that you are not overwhelmed with all the different types of cards. The "Draft Variant" is not really changing much but if you want to have one thing less to think about, just turn it OFF for the first runs. There seem to be 5 expansions to this game, but for the moment we only have the standard version. Also, there is a Solo mode to play against the clock and I could recommend you that to get familiar with the different "Races" and cards. Let me also clarify the basis of what to expect. The Ressources are plenty but they all have a specific role: M€ (to play any cards and buy constructions), Iron (to reduce the M€ cost of specific cards), Titanium (to reduce the M€ cost of specific cards), Plants (to construct greeneries), Energy (to generate Heat), Heat (to increase the Temperature of the planet). Of course, all these ressources can also be used to play certain cards. To win Victory Points (VP), you have multiple ways of doing it: Playing cards giving VP, Accomplishing Milestones (first to have 3 Cities, first to have 3 greeneries, etc.), Gaining Awards (have the most Heat, have the most Iron/Titanium, etc.), Constructing Greeneries, Constructing Cities (more VP if surrounded by Greeneries) and Improving the Planet characteristics (Temperature, Oxygen, Water). That's basically all there is to it. There are an unlimited amount of rounds but the game stops when all the Planet characteristics are reached (14% Oxygen, 8°C, 9 Oceans). So this adds an additional strategic choice of whether to end the game fast or let it run a little bit longer to amass more points. The system is fair because the player turn is rolled up every time: the first becomes last, the second becomes first, etc. Also, if you can't or don't want to play during your turn, you can Pass and wait until the next phase/Generation. But this also means that you have to be careful and not play all you cards right away because you might leave the room for your enemies if you Pass too early. I definitely enjoy this part because other game most often make you play in turns but here you can decide to prematurely end your turn by going all-in in the first steps or going slowly by playing cards one-by-one to see what your opponent decides to do. There isn't much interactions between players using Cards (there are some but they are limited) but instead you have to compete for key positions on the board. You have to chose the right moment to play cards or increase the Oxygen, Temperature and Oceans because your opponent could easily profit from it. What I mean by that is that each cards have a requirement in ressources but also in conditions. For instance, to build forests you need the temperature to be above a certain threshold or to have animals, you need the oxygen to reach acceptable levels. So by Heating up the planet and gaining a VP, you might end up unlocking the condition for an opponent's card. There is also a "Race" you have to chose at the beginning. Each one has a starting bonus and some effects during the game. This will help you focus on a specific way of gathering VP instead of running around without any specific goal in mind. About the negative points this game received, I have read several reviews but they all tend to say the same thing, which is a shame... Most of the problems come from the Multiplayer mode and as I haven't played it, I can't say much but I am sure the devs are looking into it and will for sure correct it. However, other negative reviews concern mainly the UI and after playing on an iPhone 7S+, I have nothing to say about that. The game is smooth, the text is ok (and I have bad eyesight...), didn't encountered any bugs... Some people nag about the pop up asking if you want to confirm your choice. Sure it can be annoying to some, but on a touchscreen, I prefer to be asked in case the made an error or did a mistake when I wanted to read the description instead of playing it... Also, some of the problems I have read for the PC version are not present in the iOS one, so I guess they did correct it during the port. Every time I think about a digital adaptation of a board game, I always see positive points. The game is cheaper than its physical counterpart. The game is portable and you can play whenever and wherever you want. The game is quicker because you don't have to deal with the cards, the distribution and so on. The game is easier for the brain because it indicates you what you can or can't do without having to check the rules every time. It also keeps count of your ressources and you can quickly take a look at the enemy status without having to add mental calculus on top of the already difficult strategic choices. And don't forget the graphical aspect of it! Seeing the waters rise and the forests grow is really cool PapaT, CrayonWarrior, Son of Anarchy and 5 others like this. chengchisang Well-Known Member May 25, 2018 119 31 28 #13 chengchisang, Dec 5, 2019 Thanks for taking time and $$$ and write us a comment. Would be great to know about each separately Ringerill Well-Known Member Dec 13, 2012 315 170 43 #15 Ringerill, Dec 6, 2019 From what I heard, it seems to be async. I didn't set up a multiplayer game yet but I saw someone complaining that you have to leave the room open and running until everyone joins. Like all Asmodee games out there, you can set up a game and set a timer to warn people how active you plan to be. You can setup Public, Private or Quickmatches games. You also have more parameters you can tweak, like the Karma level (I suppose it's a currency you get for playing a game till the end and not leaving). The possibility to have AI SUB is from what I understood a nice feature where an AI will replace a player who has left the game and didn't play during his turn. That way, you are not left alone in the abyss of abandoned multiplayer games. chengchisang Well-Known Member May 25, 2018 119 31 28 #16 chengchisang, Dec 6, 2019 From BGG: skoptic Well-Known Member Apr 3, 2015 634 82 28 #17 skoptic, Dec 6, 2019 Thanks both - saw the BGG post, hmmmm. Off the wish list then Ringerill Well-Known Member Dec 13, 2012 315 170 43 #18 Ringerill, Dec 9, 2019 Yeah, I would say this is the most critical part of multiplayer. Especially if you are looking for random opponents and not a close friend nearby. But stay tuned, maybe they plan to change this. After all, they seemed to be rushed with the release because of deadlines. Talbs Well-Known Member May 1, 2011 2,616 377 83 #19 Talbs, Dec 10, 2019 Huh? It says it’s async, but it’s just got issues.
