This game is very well made. The detailed animations and cool parallax scrolling effects make it charming to play, more enjoyable to me to have my pixel ninja throwing out kung Fu moves than blasting zombies.
UPDATE: After spending a little more time on this game last night, the gestures did seem to come with me with a little more ease. Doing the super kick and fireball moves are still tough to do in a pinch and take a couple of try's to get them to work right. But other aspects of the game seem to get better with time and practice. The gesture system takes a little bit longer to adapt to that I had expected. I was quite disappointed in this game. The reviews that were up when I bought the game actually looked quite good! I thought that this would be a fun game for me to pick up and play over the weekend. After about 30 seconds of playing the story mode I was dead sick of it. The controls do not work, virtual pad or gestures. The the virtual pad is too sensitive and hard to find the attack buttons when you need them in a pinch. The gestures are just as bad, Jumping is near impossible and my character seems to never go where I had intended him to go. The story mod is super hard as well. I have had to start over the first mission 3 or 4 times so far, and I still havent beaten it after about 45 minutes of game play. Either I suck at this game or it is really hard. If this was a 99 cent game then I might have given it a little more slack. But because I paid 4 bucks for this and it is this bad? No thanks. Do not buy unless the developer does some sort of serious overhaul to the controls and an option to set the difficulty.
Your trouble with story mode seems to be related to your specific control difficulty. I had no problems with the controls, and actually found the game to be on the easy side. arn
I found no control difficulties either, I think it's just you. The game does tend to be a little on the easy side, but it's still fun for me.
My character just seems to jump or roll where ever he pleases though. I have played for a little under an hour. Does it really take any longer than that to adapt to the control scheme?
Wow after one post that was in the minority? The game is great! You should read the rest of the reviews. That happens to be one isolated instance where the person is having trouble with the controls. The rest of the comments are that the controls are tight - both the touch and the d-pad ones. Sounds like you were already falling off the not to buy fence to begin with!
Try playing on the training mode. There you can experiment and get to learn which way your character needs to face, etc. If you are having THAT much trouble too you can start over and get the tips from your sensei on how to do moves. Remember there will only be a few to start and then you will unlock more!
If you are using gestures, then the roll is based on the direction of your swipe. So if you swipe down to the left, then he rolls to the left. Same for jump. But both these are overriden by your movement. So if you are running to the right and swipe down to the left, you are actually rolling to the right (direction of movement). Anyway, I am sorry that you find it hard to control. We spent quite a bit of time making the controls as good as possible, just ask our beta-testers who saw about 3 or so different controls schemes till we got it (Mr. Charley, are you here? ). You might be able to spend some time in training mode just trying out the controls without worrying about being attacked, to get better at it. If you have suggestions to improve the controls you can post, email, or PM me. I take full blame for the controls, as I spent months rewriting it.
Yup, I'm here! Let me say that I'm surprised to hear there are any problems with the controls, considering how many schemes were tested. Knight will be the first to tell you that during Beta testing, I had my share of comments regarding the need to improve the controls and I really think they work great now...had the first type been implemented, I may have agreed with you but honestly, the controls are pretty spot on. Only think I can think of is that maybe it's a matter of you going too quickly, but the controls work extremely well IMO. It also seems that most people agree the controls work great so it may just be a nuance in your gesturing.. I personally prefer the swipe gestures than the dpad controls but would suggest the training and practicing one particular move until it becomes second nature for you.... Which controls are you using? And have you tried both styles?
This game is so friggin' amazing that it got a spot on my first page. No seriously, this game is awesome.
I love the game and do no regret the purchase at all... but it is way to short. I am not a very skilled gamer but story mode was over for me in less than an hour... I hope for new content in the future.
I'm picking this up right now based on the solid feedback from the TA posse and Big Albie's review. But if this get a price drop anytime soon someone's going to get Tap Fu'ed!

I've played through story mode and done a few rounds of the "100" mode. Let me chime in and say that overall I really dig the game, for its gameplay mechanics, charming and polished graphics, and wicked sense of humor (any game that interrupts the action for a 30 second ode to candy is alright in my book). It reminds me of Viewtiful Joe (more than Double Dragon or Karateka), a resemblace that will only get stronger once the developer incorporates characters from other genres in subsequent chapters. VJ, of course, had much more going for it than just beat 'em up action: it had platforming and puzzle elements that helped to create a more varied gaming experience. It would be great to see some of that in Tap-Fu -- even if it's just allowing you to climb onto (multistory) roofstops during fights or to seek out special candy powerups. Arn's idea of bringing in locks and keys/switches could really add to the gameplay as well. I'm with Big Albie on this one: the game feels like a wonderful begining. I would love to see it develop further.
