Thanks for taking the time jaxon, I hope you have a lot of success with this game. I for one will be buying everything tonight and every time you update the game with new expansions.
I had no idea that this was even in the works. I've wanted to play Talisman for a while, so this is ideal. If I like this version, I'll have a real reason to pick up the board game.
If it's like the Steam version, only the person hosting the game needs the content, I believe. Make sure you have a group of people willing to play it with you first. This is not a very interesting solo game, Prologue notwithstanding.
As long as at least one player in the game owns an expansion, it can be switched on for that game. You can only choose characters from an expansion if you've bought it though. For example, if I choose to play online and I haven't bought anything, and you join my game and you own the Reaper pack, the Reaper can be used for that game but only you can play as characters from that pack.
Peculiar design choices all around. No async is a dealbreaker for some time-pressed multiplayer like me, and CAN be designed and implemented successfully, the presence of spells that demand opponent response notwithstanding (se Playdek titles for examples). (And, contrary to a strange popular belief, async does not have to take anything away from the multiplayer mode. Allow players to set up realtime only matches, for an async-free experience, and let async matches run in realtime until someone closes the app, the way Carcassonne and Playdek games goes about their business, to ensure that even games where you expect your opponent to drop out run smoothly, mvoes propagate quickly, etc.) Also, no iPhone support is a bit surprising in a title where the UI and graphics have already been ported to the smaller format, just recently.
There is a thread on the Steam forum where people are requesting that Nomad make a computer/mobile version of Relic here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/247000/discussions/0/558749190589394498/
I agree with you on both points for the most part, but asynch would take more resources to program, and as for iPhone support, DE has a lot of extra UI bits that Prologue didn't have, so they have to work those all onto the small phone screen somehow.
I did seriously consider asynch multiplayer for quite a while, and we haven't ruled it out. It would have to be a slightly different experience to the base game for it to suit asynch. For instance, your turn can be very short, sometimes just a few seconds, so you might spend longer loading the game to take your turn than you would actually having the turn. Also, I think Talisman is a game of watching what everyone does and reacting to it. Having everyone take their turns asynchronously would remove a lot of the feeling you get during play. How would you react to spells? If you have counterspell, would the game have to tell you everytime anyone cast a spell so you could load the game and see if you want to counter it? Like I say, we may add it when we've solved all of the problems it causes, but it would likely be a slightly different game mode. Capture the Hag maybe
Any plans for a Talisman 2nd Edition? That's the one I have (and I gather it's generally considered to be the best one).
I'd argue against the family friendly part of the description as well, I mean, they game is pretty competitive and will cause some bitter backstabbing and resentment if played like it's played with the physical version! ;p
