Carmageddon is my game of the year. I cannot believe how much fun it is. I just wish I played it back in the day too. I had to vote for Ravensword because western RPGs are my favorite genre these days.
Incredible how Ravensword has pulled out front considering the late release. While it has the advantage of being forefront in people's minds, it doesn't have the time basis for a lot of people to try it. It's still in my backlog for instance. I think it came out too late for most website GOTY lists.
I voted for 10000000. A complete surprise for me. Even after all the praise on this forum I thought I would probably not like the game, so I never bought it. I tried the free version of Dungeon Raid once and it didn't grab me, so I figured these RPG/Match-3 games were not for me. Then I read that the dev of 10000000 had quit his job and just had a baby, so I bought it anyway. I had no idea what I was doing for about half of the game. It took me a long time before I even found the potions. But, despite the fact that I constantly felt that I really sucked at the game, I couldn't stop playing. Few other games grabbed me like that this year, and from the nominees this is the only one that did, so it's my GOTY.
Cool story... my problem is that it happened to me on all the games on the poll list, except for GTA. So whatever wins this poll, we win. These games are all must-haves for the iOS gamer.
What's interesting and I can't comment because I can't play it on my 3GS (but certainly would if I could!). Is that aside from the TA review, the only other reviews I've seen have been good, but not great (3/4 STP, 3/5 AppSpy, 7/10 Pocketgamer). Maybe they all didn't play enough of it either to judge it fairly since it's obviously winning the hearts of TA members!
It's hard to think of a newly released game being in the lead... I always considered GOTY material to be a game that holds up after numerous hours of gameplay, not just something that's great at first, but goes downhill after hours of play... I'm not saying that any of these don't deserve to win... I'm just finding it surprising how many votes some games have, as well as which games made the final list. Just doesn't click in my head...
Agreed. I'm kinda disappointed it's not beating Ravensword. I own both and I like both but TWD was just too amazing in every aspect of the game. For me Bastion was a close second, that's one hell of an amazing game right there.
Yeah..I go through the "flavor of the month" for games. I tried nominating games that stood the test of time for me (but made an exception for Need for Speed Most Wanted). Ended up voting for Bastion mostly for the high production value of the game to me, despite not being wowed by the actual gameplay.
I kind of agree with this as well since it's a but unfair to the great games that came out early in the year that get outnominated due to the newer games fresh in people's minds. Don't know how to get around it though since it also would be unfair to exlude the newer games. Maybe a future resolution could be to have the year run from like October to October - forcing people to really go back and look at older releases. But people say the same thing even about the Oscars. A lot of movies get held back for November/December release just to be fresh in the minds of voters. Oh well, no system is perfect.
This wouldn't be particularly fair, though (as you note); your posts also seem to indicate that you believe the reason the game that is currently in the lead holds that position is because it's newer, not because it actually deserves to be there. While a lot of the games on the GotY list are good, a number of them have remained in the minds of gamers as classics since before 2012 (which counteracts the "newness" factor) and/or are non-iOS-specific cross-platform efforts. Ravensword, conversely, is ambitious, detailed, and was initially designed as an iOS game primarily, which I think elevates it when considering the iOS GotY. With TWD, as I mentioned, it is easy to see why other publications named the game as a whole GotY, but the iOS incarnation suffers from so many cuts and compromises that I don't think it offers the same experience it does on other platforms, and loses points for that. People complained that Jurassic Park was too close to just being an "interactive movie", so I don't know why Telltale made unnecessary design decisions that push the iOS version of TWD more in that direction. If people want to look at fairness in polls, though, it might be better to start with the fact that cheaper/free games are consistently more likely to get GotW (or 2nd/3rd place) here simply because more people download and vote for those than pick up the more expensive games (hugely anticipated big-name titles aside) - it isn't as if this is even a particularly subtle effect.
Sorry if I came across that way as I am certainly in no position to judge Ravensword (which I wish I could play). I'm sure it could very well deserve it. Just saying that it's just human nature (especially for an old geezer like me) to remember more recent experiences.
So true. I've noticed that there is a trend of cheap/free games getting a lot of attention in gotw threads vs. more expensive games. At the end of the day, I guess, we just have to accept the fact that games we might not feel deserve a title get it for reasons beyond our control. Congrats to crescent moon on the lead.
Disappointing that Nihilumbra didn't make it.. As well as a few others, voted for punch quest.. Maybe I need to check out ravensword... Doing really well. I dunno I think people automatically will like the newer game if their split on something they liked in the past...they would have to have to have really liked it enough to vote it over something they already played. If waking mars (or any of the A+ titles of the first half oty)had come out near the end of the year maybe it would be winning? Or maybe ravensword really is that good..I dunno *interstingly that's exactly the disscussion at hand. Having posted this without even reading the previous posts
Must say I like Horn a lot! Also I like Bullistic Unleashed. Out of the choices I'd go with : 1) Vice City 2) The Walking dead 3) Rayman Jungle Run 4) Punch Quest 5) Bastion Couldn't consider Ravensword 'cause I never played it. Sounds like I should give that a look, though.
I voted for The Walking Dead. My favorite of the list is undoubtly Bastion but as Ive had already played and enjoyed on other system before doing so on ios I sent it to third place. Ravensword is my second place and I really think it should win mainly because is a great effort which also is an original of the platform. I just couldnt give my vote to it as TWD was amazingly engaging story and emotion-wise and thats not something games do on a usual basis to me. Great contenders though, I really cant believe how this amazing games are so dirty cheap, its a crazy world now.
That is completely ridiculous. The game is identical to the console/PC version and on A6 devices actually runs far better than the console versions. Not to mention that a touchscreen is absolutely perfect for TWD style game.
I know right... Everything about the iOS version is better. And I've played all three versions. (Demo's on PC/PS3 still)
