Yeah, this is unfortunate. Same thing with Beat Hazard Ultra. I also use Rhapsody for my music downloads. Had to download a few iTunes songs to work with BHU. I imagine there's not a whole lot of iPhone/iPod users who use Rhapsody over iTunes so it's probably not worth the effort for devs to even try to support it.
Greetings and congratulations to Alex on the release of your excellent game. I had the great pleasure of Beta Testing Synesthetic and found it to be a captivating and endlessly enjoyable experience. It really brings your music to life visually and allows you to interact with it through light gameplay elements. To answer a previous query, although I am not familiar with the programming involved, both the visualizer and obstacle effects are synchronized with your music. This is especially evident in the second mode where each ring seemed especially in synch with the underlying beat or pulse, making this mode especially enjoyable with highly rhythmic songs. The following are some excerpts from my testing notes originally given as feedback to specific questions but which may also be of interest to those considering purchasing this fine game: Difficulty is moderate and enjoyable ... I tested with tracks from the Bit.Trip Soundtrack Sampler, Arcade Fire, Ravi Shankar, and Ahmedjan Thirakwa. I found that the more polished recordings and electronic sounds of the first three translated into more interesting visuals than the poor quality minimalistic recordings of Ahmedjan Thirakwa (Tabla & Sarangi) only. The Ravi Shankar tracks have led me to the opinion that these are some of the most amazing visuals that I have experienced in conjunction with this music on any device. I think this game can easily achieve a 4.5 star rating. (What this really means is that it is a 5 star game that may achieve 4.5 stars owing to the consideration of those who lack aesthetic sensibilities) There have been several attempts to create a synesthetic gaming experience on the iphone with mixed results. Likewise, I have had difficulty finding a good music visualizer app. Your game appears to be the most successful so far in both of these areas.
I just played through all 8 minutes 20 seconds of Die Antwoord's Beat Boy and it broke my mind. ...in a good way.
I haven't got time to read the whole thread right now, but I have one question...does this game support Internet radio, like Beat Hazard Ultra does? I don't have enough space on my device, so I keep all my tunes on my iPod Classic. I know this game analyzes a track before it generates a level, but the same could be done w/radio, as long as low bitrate stream is cached before the level is generated.
Game Impressions Absolutely fantastic and addictive. Highly recommend Freddy Mercury's "Barcelona" for a play through (it also makes a kickass level on Space Invaders).
I just tried this out and damn, this is so fun and with good headphones you'll have a wonderful experience playing this game. Thank you for making this!!
I'm a sucker for games in which you can use your own music. Bought this and played through Fineshrine by Purity Ring a couple of times. I'm going to need to play a bit more because I played exceptionally poorly. Really interesting concept, crazy visuals, overall very nice. Congratulations, it's definitely an accomplishment.
Perhaps you picked the wrong music. From what I've seen, some songs generate far better levels than others. If the song is static, the game level will be the same.
Played this with a song with a particularly strong bassline/drum beat intro, and the game did absolutely nothing in time with or along with the tune. Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel Absolutely can not recommend this. I was just rotating around a pole while a song happened to be playing in the background, felt no involvement whatsoever.
Hello, I'm sorry to intervene but I've just played this song, the bass line is a lot mellower than the vocals and the keys so the game ignores it for the latter. I realize this isn't always the ideal solution but for this particular song it actually works pretty well. The track clearly moves in tune with the music with the exception of the first couple of seconds when not much is happening.
I think this game is awesome! Deff long over due for a game like this! Thank you very much for creating it!!!
Game Impressions Trying the lite version with several songs and I cannot grasp the excitement of playing this. First of all, there's not much of a gameplay. Nothing happens but the sound reduces when I hit obstacles. I can just do nothing and it will be going on and on. What's the fun of that? Then, I also can't really see that the obstacles is moving with the tunes. Sorry to say, I like Boost2 and I adore Beat Hazard, but I don't get this one. If anybody want to buy this, I suggest that you should try the lite version first. If you like it, then you can buy it.
I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the game. The full version has three game modes while the lite version only has one. This is a casual/training mode which doesn't have too many gameplay hooks to avoid frustrating newcomers. Also I've intentionally made it so that the music isn't stopped when you fail because I find that very annoying. I'm not saying you'll enjoy the full version, but I am saying that there is a lot more gameplay in that one. As for the obstacles: pick a song that goes from a bass heavy section to a vocal or synth/violin section and you'll immediately notice the difference.
