Yes, the temple shield is pretty cool... though it won't protect you from fire, unlike another shield nobody seems to have found yet. ;)

The best shield I found so far was the spiked one. I was pretty pissed when that broke, so I can only imagine how I'd feel if a temple shield broke!

Wow, I used a box of wall to sneak around the Minotaur and get the sword, thinking it would own the Minotaur. 10 seconds after retrieving the sword, I was killed by the Minotaur, and game over. That sucks :p

Ahh you can always find more spiked shields... they are not super common, but they are out there. Also, Mr. Barbarian shows up with one every now and then.

Will090, ah, that's too bad. I also want to give a shout-out to my boy the bad-ass Minotaur, for doing his job well. :D

Just one of 23 shield potions does for the minotaur. There's a weird balance between hero and legend. Hero: almost guaranteed to win unless you're stupid; Legend: you're going to lose.

e:note that I like Legend the way it is.

For anyone that has all three, which should I get Zenonia 2, Luna Story or this. I realize the first two are probably a little deeper story and RPG-wise. But I'm really just all about fun and combat so the RPG elements don't mean a whole lot to me. I also didn't play the first Zenonia so that may also play into it a bit.

So? (I do realize that posting this in a Sword of Fargoal thread will probably be a little slanted - so please post honest opinions).

  7. Zenonia 2 and Luna Story are both JRPGs. Very different games focusing on storyline, dialogue, and moderate on the RPG elements. They're also static and the storyline is linear so once you've completed them there isn't a whole lot to compel you to do it again except just for the sake of doing so.

Fargoal is a "lite" Roguelike. That is to say, it's RPGish but not heavy on stats or upgrading and allocating stat points or keeping large inventories of armour, weapons, etc. As Roguelikes go, Fargoal keeps in simple and to the point, slimming the experience down to its essentials with some extras thrown in for enjoyment and good measure. It focuses on the pure enjoyment of the gameplay, given that the storyline doesn't get any simpler: Plumb the depths. Get the sword. Get out. Don't die. Like Roguelikes, Fargoal's big selling point is randomly generated dungeons with each new profile you create. The maps are different every time you start a new game. There is plenty in the game to keep you interested though; lots of different monster types, different items to find (including magical items), potions, scrolls, shields, and a wonderful blend between retro and modern graphics.

Unlike Roguelikes, Team Fargoal have done their best do focus on what makes Roguelikes fun by eliminating what makes them sometimes tedious or frustrating; you don't need to eat or drink, spend a turn changing armor or weapons or selecting wands, etc. Furthermore, Fargoal is realtime rather than turn-based; enemies don't stop just because you do.

It's a very different experience than JRPGs, yet has a lot in common with traditional RPGs and Roguelikes without being tedious or grindtastic. It's challenging -- on Legend mode it's downright punishing -- without being frustrating. They've struck a perfect balance between gameplay and depth that keeps it interesting and compelling.

Now, I'm no fan of JRPGs so I'm the wrong person to ask: I'll tell you to pick Fargoal every time. But being that it's different it can easily and peacefully coexist on your device with JRPGs without feeling like you're duplicating any experiences. Heck, it even exists with other Roguelikes and still feels fresh.

Definitely give it a go. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. If you're in the US I'll even back that up by offering to buy you one of the others if you are.

Would that be the reflective shield (think that was the name)? I had one, iirc, only once. Think I ditched it first time I saw a macabre shield, but honestly it's been long enough I could have broken it or anything else:D

    Shields I've bumped into:

    Barrel Lid
    Wooden
    Studded Leather
    Metal
    Spiked
    Macabre
    Reflective
    War

With four heroes that have made it to level 13 or lower (1 hero, 3 legend), and the untold masses dead in the first five levels, I've either had rotten luck with a Temple Shield, or it's a rare gem indeed...

Reflective shield is not the one I'm talking about. You might even have to scour floor 20 or 21 to find the one I mentioned. There are other secrets to be found around those areas...

Glad nobody seems to have found it though. I can sneak more secrets in while you're all looking for the mystery shield(s). ;)

BTW... is anyone else getting sick of purple yet? :) I've done a bit of a make-over on the cave levels, so in an update or two you'll see some changes there that makes them more mundane. Purple will make a return but it will be less common, more special.

Also, we will be adding more items and equipment, but still trying to keep everything streamlined with minimal fuss and management. Still, if there are more wand types (for example), that's more wands to potentially switch between at various points in the game. You guys OK with that, or is less more in this case?

Thanks. I'll give this a go. I like JRPG's too but talking to NPCs, etc. can get tedious. For a iPod Touch game, I'd probably like to keep things simpler anyway.

    Bugtooth?

I've got it and cannot discern (ahem) what it does. Do tell.

If I were really to lose on Squire level (I haven't) would that really and truly mean I am stupid?

I haven't played this much, but every game seems drastically different in terms of loot. I've never seen an orb or a medallion until I started this current game and I've found at least one in the last 8 or so floors.

Also, I've found tons of new shields I've never seen and 28 weapon enchantment spells. I'm only on floor 14 or 15 and I'm at level twenty something. I also have 30 or 40 regeneration and healing potion, and restoration and shield scrolls... each. With all the orbs, medallions, weapon enchantments, and other stuff I'm practically invincible. In previous games, I couldn't find jack.

    Edit:
BTW, what does the reflective shield do?

Bugtooth protects against poison. You probably wouldn't notice unless you were poisoned. :)

And if you lose on Squire mode... well, anyone can lose on the way out, Squire or no. And this is a roguelike... that means everyone is stupid. ;) Thus the oft-used term "Yet Another Stupid Death" (YASD). :) If you've ever looked at Nethack forums, the post topics are full of YASD's. :D

  14. See, that's what's awesome. Even when you think you've found everything, you haven't. :D

I don't mind the purple. I like the differentiation between dungeons. It helps keep different areas straight in my head.

I'm also cool with more stuff. More is more. More is good. Switching between them is fine and lets you pick the right tool for the job when needed.

Question: Are there more amulets? Can you wear more than one at a time? If not, any plans for, say, rings or other special items that could be made to visually display magical properties (glowing when in use) like bracers or helms or stuff? These could largely be passive items like shields which could also break, or permanent effect items like the eyes and amulets.

Just thinking aloud here to amp up the potential booty and surprise "Oh wow I haven't seen one of those before" factor.

NotYou, the Reflective Shield disperses magical attacks. Also, if you're feeling invincible, then might as well go for the sword early. ;)

Well the purple is changed for now, anyway. I'll bring it back though, in other areas.

As for more stuff... yeah, more amulets are coming. Only ever one amulet at a time. We will likely have some rings, and helmets. Beyond that, well I might have to redo all of the graphics at that point to support the crazy overlays, heh. ;)

And some other items are coming too... stuff that will make you choose between carrying a shield, or the *item*. etc.

A lot more is planned. It all depends on how well the game does, really. :) Still workin' the day job and all that.

Figures :p That's great though. Of course I'd have to be feeling pretty freaking untouchable to go diving for a shield beyond level 20 on legend... If I ever make it that far

That sounds nice. Honestly, the look now is fine with me, and there's enough variety, but if it isn't taking away from all your other machinations, I say go for it!

You've already shown you know what you're doing when it comes to adding some depth to the itemization without changing the feel of the game. I say go for it and if you break it, we'll riot!!!!!!!:p

    Dig Not Sneak

Weird. I was revisiting a some dungeons picking up buried gold. In several spots the Dig button didn't appear. Instead there is/was the Sneak button. I dumped the gold I had at a temple and returned to those spots. Still couldn't dig it up. Reason for this? My pockets were empty and I still had magic sacks. Maybe I should sue or something?

I actually though Bugtooth was fairly obvious. I found one on my first game after the update. My first game must have been really lucky, because out of around 10 or so games on Legend, I just can't make it past floor 2. A couple of times I didn't even get a kill. One game I took around 5 steps and a strong bat came out of a hole in the ceiling and killed me in two hits. So I definitely got what I wanted when I asked for more difficulty.

Are you sure you submitted properly? It's still not out.... :(

  20. I told him. I told him, code-side up or else it'll smear all over the slot, but did he listen? Noooo. So what happened? A bunch of dangling printf(s) and torn arrays leaking their elements out of the slot. It was a bloody mess. You know, if the update turns up anyway and the game is full of weird objects like "Bologna Shield" and "Wand of Ear Cleaning" don't say I didn't warn you, Paul.
