I just registered here to say I just won on my very first game! (Hero mode). The character was called Hero 1 because I must have missed where you could enter your own names. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I must have come pretty close to the time limit because the dungeon was coming down around me.

I must say, I had 29 invis spells when I grabbed the sword and getting back up was less a case of fighting and more frantically mapping because I'd missed so much out.

I've played almost every rogue-like under the sun and so I had a fair idea what was going on. Now to try Legend, I suppose. Or back to back win? I think I'd be too nervous to try that!

Anyway, thanks for the great game and the helpful people in this thread whose opinions convinced me to try it.

  2. Okay, I think I figured out why I wasn't getting blessed: You don't get them if you aren't down any hit points. No lost hit points, no reason for a blessing, so no blessing. So now I made sure I had some hit points to restore when I stepped on a temple and sure enough, got blessed and a newly forged shield. Sweet. Just gotta make sure I'm hurt before I step on it.

@Calisto - Welcome to the forums! Glad you're liking the game. It's truly worth the price and the time spent with it. I'd say go for Legend mode -- but prepare to really gather your wits about you and run when you need to. You'll need them just to survive. Also, don't count on survival until you've probably died a few times in order to be able to get a good bead on the difficulty level.

Good point Mindfield... I'll remove the "must be hurt" limitation since there are other things going on now!

Calisto, congrats on the victory. :) The time remaining to escape (in game steps) is displayed in the pause screen once you're on your "Sword Run." Check it out next time. But yes, when the dungeon starts rumbling, well... that's trouble. ;)

I wish Apple would pull their finger out and approve the update..... Need. Some. Sword. Hunting. NOW!

  6. Awesome. That'll be one less thing to have to worry about when tooling around the dungeons. Looking forward to the update, probably shortly after Easter, depending on whether the Cupertino bunch get Monday off or not. (I don't. :p)

Yes, Paul. Wives _always_ count. If I counted even one other female among my friends who plays computer games, I would turn her on to Fargoal.

I played it on the iPad for a minute or two (so many things to test, so little time!). It's lovely having a larger field to play on, but the pixellation is a bit of a disappointment, I confess. I assume in future updates the resolution will be better/crisper, true? I'm so hooked on the game that I won't mind too much, but I fear that those who are brand new to Fargoal won't be happy with how it looks (even though how it plays is terrific).
    Whatcha think?

I really won't know until I play for myself, heh. It'll be a while before we (I) can consider updating the game graphics... but the zoom levels on the iPad shouldn't be pixelated if you aren't zoomed in super close. You can get 1:1 scaling, after all, and even view the whole dungeon at minimum zoom. Once we add theme support though, anything can happen. All in due time.

    bluewomble88, is that you? :p

  11. I have to ask: Is there ever anything to be found in barrels? Any time I search there's either nothing there, or a rat. And is there any reason at all one would want to go into those small round rooms with the skull door that closes behind you? There's only ever either nothing or a pit trap in it, at least so far as I've been able to find.

There is occasionally something in the barrels. I'll be doing more with them over the next updates though. We were going to put wine in some of them, but realized that would affect our age rating in the App store, heh.

And the skull door rooms, yes. Sometimes they contain an artifact. It's a bit of a gamble. ;)

  13. Well, the skull rooms aren't a huge problem; if I get trapped in one I just teleport out, and if there's a pit trap I can usually climb out. (hopefully; I've had the rope from such a trap snap and strand me on a lower level once, but fortunately it seems fairly rare.)

I just wanted to know about the barrels so I knew whether I should bother searching them or not. Since I haven't found anything in them I'll just leave them alone.

Any plans to reinstate a more visual secret door identification method? Getting a little tired of grinding my way through levels banging against the walls where I think secret doors should be. :)

Yeah, you can ignore the barrels if you want. For now. Skull rooms etc. are just the beginning of the devious trappy rooms and such that are being introduced over the next updates.

As for the secret doors... sure, never used a magic light spell to reveal the illusion cast on the secret door? Sheesh... n00b!

If you don't have a light spell, there is also a lighting variation you may be able to pick out on those doors.

    There are "secret" doors?

I think I must have been in a level with one. I couldn't find a tunnel so I went up the stairs and descended another set to get to a different room. But I'm not sure about that. Are the secret doors exclusive to legend mode or do they only come in after getting to a certain floor?

Also, I'm sure this has been asked, but I've no idea on what page so, what does "drift" do?

  16. I've tried discerning a difference between the secret walls and normal ones, but I couldn't really tell. Not enough to notice in passing certainly, and not really even when looking at one I've already found and comparing it to those around it.

I'll try the light spell. I do recall coming upon a door that had a symbol on it when I passed it, but I thought it was perhaps an orb I was carrying, and don't recall having a light spell active. I'll shed some light on the subject though...

  17. Drift lets you float when you fall down pits so you don't take any damage. If you notice when you fall through a pit, there's a brief pause and the smart button in the top right turns to the Drift spell; this is to give you time to cast it to avoid taking damage when you land.

There are secret doors, yes. They usually hold treasure chests, pots, and/or treasure out in the open. There are also holes in the wall in some areas. They're located along the extreme border somewhere, generally denoted by some rubble on the ground, and when you pass by it, a message will pop up telling you of said hole. If you go through this hole you'll enter a whole new section of dungeon on the same floor. There are usually 2-3 such areas per level. They aren't always accessible through holes in walls though; sometimes they're only connected by stairs on other levels of the dungeon, possible more than one floor away. That's why it's always good to explore everywhere -- go through every hole, check every stairwell, if you want to be thorough and find all possible areas.

Oh I've seen the holes in the walls that let you tunnel to different sections in the dungeon, I just haven't found any of these secret walls that apparently you cannot see without a light spell. That's pretty interesting. I will try to be more thorough with that in mind.

Yup, Mindfield that symbol you saw was the the door revealed by a light spell. Once you find one again, take a look at how the light falls on the door, you may see what I'm talking about.

BTW, just because there *are* secret rooms, doesn't mean you're entitled to find every single one of 'em. ;)

medianotzu, Drift is also good for climbing back up the ropes, as it prevents you from falling while climbing since you're so light and floaty.

That's good information, thanks for that. I was expecting drift to make me visibly float, so when it didn't I was a bit confused. :)
