Buy both!! Oops! Meant to reply to the original comment and not the reply! Comment redacted and re-posted correctly! ;^)
Buy both!! We are big fans of Kevin's game, Rogue Touch, and advocate buying his!! He did a great job capturing the feeling of the "retro" Rogue and "dungeon crawler" era. In an ideal world, buy both! Right now Rogue Touch and Sword of Fargoal are the same price ($2.99 US), so it is a good time to buy them while ours is on sale. Believe it or not, CommanderData (Kevin) was kind enough to start this thread on "Sword of Fargoal" -- very generous of him! But I guess the retro-"Dungeon Crawler" world always tended to be that way. Enjoy whatever you decide! -- Jeff McCord
I wish I could buy both but I unfortunately only have time for one, and I will have squeeze it in. You see I'm never home so the only games I play are on my iPhone, any sort of emulator on pc is out of the question. I think I will be buying this, everyone's saying so much about the controls and I'm digging the auto-save feature with different save slots and a quick action start. That itself is the reason I play warfare inc. on a regular basis. I may not post impressions right away but I will as soon as I can. I dont know if it might be my cup of tea but then again thats what i thought about RTS/fps/and rpg's when i first heard about them. (I'm originally a 2d fighting game fan)
If you're new to dungeon crawlers, and are considering buying Fargoal or RogueTouch, go with Fargoal. I bought RogueTouch a few months ago and barely played it. Not much of a fan of dungeon crawlers, I guess. Sword of Fargoal seemed like a nice spin on the genre, and is rightfully praised for its perfect/simple gameplay blend. It's fun to explore and kill beasts, collecting gold and dropping it off. Unnecessary resource management is gone (items/stats/etc), leaving the essentials (potions/teleports/etc). Keeping the game at its essentials makes it incredibly fun. Kudos on the dungeon randomizer. The maps are well-designed and challenging, and the number of secret passages, trap doors, and stairs give dungeon complexity a huge boost. These factors make the game feel very nonlinear. There's an emphasis on level grinding, but I don't mind that too much. It makes me relax a bit and enjoy exploring the tunnels. There are enough escapes and panic buttons in the game that (after I got a few practice games under my belt) I didn't find myself dying after hours of playing. The instadeath feature adds a bit of excitement to it - makes progress feel like an accomplishment. Haven't gotten to the bottom yet (floor 11 so far), but the deeper levels have some interesting gameplay twists. All in all, Sword of Fargoal is a very good purchase!
It seems like you buy Sword of Fargoal and like it alot so when you want more you move on and buy Rogue Touch! It's like Fargoal is a funnel into Rogue Touch. I like both and I'm sure I would have been alright with Rogue Touch if I had only played it but I really enjoy it now because of Sword of Fargoal!
Wow! That's perfect! We love hearing that we can help popularize the genre. Maybe we are the gateway drug!! ;^) -- Jeff
okay so, i'm gonna buy it but can you rename your character every new game? that's probably my favorite part of Rogue touch. I'd give my guy so many different funny names and it made the game so much better (especially when looking at the hall of fame) also this probably pertains to both games but, what do you do with gold? CommanderData/[email protected] please answer this. Is it just a measure of your success?
Hey there: You can name your characters, yes! And you can create up to eight different character names, too. However, once they are named, you cannot change the name unless you are creating a new one. That maybe a feature we would consider for the future if liked that way. Gold? You can carry a certain amount of it, but we have a unique element called a "temple" -- It is like a resting place, where you heal faster, but you can also "sacrifice" your gold, which converts to experience points! Hope this helps... -- Jeff McCord
lol ... to be honest the sounds are very similar albeit much lower quality in the PC version. The same can be said about the graphics. I would much rather be playing the iPhone version but if someone wants to see what the game play is like, the PC version can be considered a free trial. Once again I find myself wishing there was a better battery in my iPod .....
Well, in Rogue Touch gold is basically one of the key measures of your score and success (short of actually retrieving the Amulet of Yendor that is!)... that is the same purpose it had 30 years ago in the original game. I'd toyed with the idea of adding a shop, but it would have altered the rogue formula too much. I'm glad that you enjoyed the naming in RT- the secret character names really made it fun to replay, even for me Sword of Fargoal allows you to buy "experience" at temples with that gold, which is a clever use for it, much better than letting it sit in your purse collecting dust! It's like shopping for higher levels
Yes, as long as you delete the old guy, you are free to create a new guy with a different name in the same slot. As Jeff says, we could also allow you to rename an existing live character, though I don't think that's what you were asking...
Great little roguelike though I must jump on the bandwagon of 'please add a dpad control option asap'.
Deckard, thanks for the feedback. Just a curiosity question: When you are planting your thumb on the screen, are you leaving it planted? or are you picking it up each time and putting it down again? Once you figure out the thumb-plant-swipe movement I think you might find it is quite useful. However, we are all about "options" so you may see the D-pad option in a future update! AND a physical tutorial will be in the works which will show the current movement too. -- Jeff
Game Impressions I can't even describe how much I'm loving this game. Been playing all day and, being a diehard fan of Rogue Touch, it's even more than I was hoping for. There's something sublime about RT, the way everything just comes together to make a fun, challenging, infinitely re-playable experience that's perfectly suited for the platform it's on. This game has that same magic, and with beautiful graphics and sounds to boot. RT will always hold a special place in my collection, after all I am unintentionally a hidden character , but right now this is the game that I'm going to be playing more than any other. I feel giddy that I've only just scratched the surface, there is so much more waiting for me. My few issues with the game have upon further inspection turned out not to be issues. I thought the game seemed a little too zoomed in at first, but then I realized that you can pinch to zoom in/out. And I didn't really like the controls, I was just using a quick swipe and moving 1 step at a time. But as Jeff pointed out above if you keep your finger on the screen, it acts like an analog stick and you can control how fast you go in any direction. This pretty much eliminates my desire for any kind of d-pad. I feel silly not realizing these features at first, perhaps I just wasn't paying attention. But now that I know about them, I really can't find anything to complain about. Although I do like the suggestion about being able to toggle a different size map. Also, it's worth mentioning that I didn't like the look of the fog at all from the preview video. But having the game and seeing it in action, it's quite fantastic and I don't think it could have been done any better. If you're new to rogue-likes, then I think this game is your best starting point to get interested in the genre. SoF and RT offer up different enough experiences that they can live happily side by side in the app store. You can't go wrong purchasing either or both games. But IMO Sword of Fargoal would be friendliest to noobs. It makes me so happy to see the devs supporting each others work, and forming a friendship. I gasp at the thought of what some sort of collaboration between all parties involved could be like. Thank you for Sword of Fargoal, and for being active here in our community. I've wasted hundreds of dollars on the app store, and only have a couple handfuls of games that I consider worth the asking price or more. This game is easily worth more than any price you could ever put on it. Bravo and congratulations!
