Started playing, I'm liking it a lot. But I notice a complete lack of equipment. This seems like a very curious thing to leave out of a roguelike.

Thank you Jorlen :) And it matters not what you want, because the update WILL come out and you WILL be glued to your phone for eternity. Don't fight it, don't struggle. Just relax and let Fargoal own you ;)

Well, I'm not a rogue player from back in the day. Rogue Touch was my first real experience with the genre. So I don't have the experience of playing with a full keyboard to tell you how different it is in RT. But I can tell you I play with an onscreen d pad that works flawlessly. There's one button to switch between normal and ranged attacks, and there's one button to open you inventory/do certain context sensitive things like go down stairs. Your inventory is just one big list where you equip or use items. I'd imagine it's very streamlined from all the keyboard inputs, but as far as I know it's not missing anything because of it.

It sounds like you're sold on Fargoal, which is a very good thing. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I'd say play Fargoal for now, and play the update when it comes out. If your thirst for rogue isn't fully quenched, RT will always be there. I think they are both different enough and fun in their own ways to warrant owning both, but RT isn't going anywhere in the mean time so it can't hurt to wait.

That's true. That will be slightly rectified in the update with the addition of shields and wands. But it's important to remember that Fargoal isn't a strict roguelike. Even Jeff McCord who invented the original says he didn't intend for it to be a roguelike, it just sort of turned out that way. I look at it as a dungeon crawler that plays by some of the rules of rogue. That's another big reason to also own RT, lots of equipment and spells (but with that also comes cursed equipment which can ruin your day :)) It's more of a traditional experience but doesn't have the eye candy and overall great atmosphere of Fargoal.

And just in case you aren't aware, you can get the original remake (oxymoron?) of Fargoal that was released around 2003 for your Mac or PC here. It's free and fun to pop into from time to time to get some Fargoal action on my laptop. :)

After this revelation about the lack of equipment, I think I'm going to have to buy Rogue Touch as well. That certainly isn't to say I'm not having fun with Fargoal, it just isn't what I was looking for. It's a lot of fun for what it is, and I will probably enjoy it even more after the update. Right now, though, I need a traditional AD&D style game. On to Rogue Touch!
(I do have iNethack, but the controls just drove me back to my laptop. Here's hoping Rogue fixes those problems!)

Whoa, crazy activity while I had my nose buried in code, heh.

Doffie, I'm honestly not sure if the update will go shorter than the original approval. Probably not, because our first approval was lightning quick. :)

Batman1v, yes if you look into the original C64 Sword of Fargoal game, it has about 5 spells, a healing potion, and enchanted weapon. So our first release of the iPhone version added a few items, but not too much. I can say though, that the update adds a metric crap-tonne of new stuff... not only items like potion, spells, shields etc. but so many refinements and improvements to gameplay that I can't even estimate the amount. New maps, new monsters, new traps, and lots of subtle nuance to the dungeon and monster behaviours. It still may not trip your trigger as far as typical roguelikes go due to the missing equipment, but the game is *constantly* evolving and we'll do our best to appeal to both the hardcore players and the beginners, while maintaining the streamlined interface and spirit of the original C64 version.

But also, you certainly should buy Rogue Touch, and spread the word about the awesomeness of Roguelikes in general. ;)

Thanks for the link, didn't know this was available, be nice to have Fargoal on my Mac as well.

Really loving the game, thanks to this the poor Xbox 360 has been sitting switched off for nearly a month now. Haven't even started looking for the sword properly, just been mapping out the dungeons, going deeper and deeper, think I've hit the bottom now with my guy levelled up to 37. A few more areas to check out and then I'll be going for that sword- have been putting it off because I've just been enjoying the general gameplay too much to try and 'finish' it.

Possibly a dumb question, but will the update affect current the game save? So if the update comes out while I'm still in the middle of a game, I can update and continue without any worry..?

there is fair description of the game by developers in appstore - adventure, dungeon crawler. the problems are reviews etc. which say this game is roguelike, which is definitely not. So it's actually fair that there is no tons of equipment, spells etc.

I remember quite a bit about the old times and old Sword of Fargoal.
Was one of the games I played most time on my computer.

Jeff (only 17 years old!) became a software designer and eventually designed Sword of Fargoal in 1982/1983 - this game based on another game with the epic and glorious name "Gammaquest II". I think this was designed for an older Commodore. VIC20? Or the PET?
SoF was released by Epyx, btw., a software distributor know for many glorious RPGs. Sadly, this company was one of the victims of major software piracy.
I was a big fan at this time and have read everything in the first gamer magazines about Sword of Fargoal. :)

Depends on the definition. I am a gamer for over 20 years, seen very much roguelike titles - and the roguelike is a sub-genre of role-playing games, characterized by randomization for replayability, permanent death, and turn-based movement. So I don't see why Sword of Fargoal won't fit in this category, because roguelikes are not mainly based on equipment and spells.
The feature of the permanent death is actually a main feature in every roguelike game.

You will be able to continue, though the changes will affect your old game to some degree. Things like difficulty and XP gain have changed. So you can always start up a game in a new slot and keep the old one around, of course.

As far as Fargoal being a dungeon crawler, roguelike or whatever... doesn't really matter! Back in the day, before the term "roguelike" was even coined, we just called it a "dungeon game." You're a hero, in a dungeon, fighting monsters and getting stuff. Call it a Fargoalike. ;)

I think you mean 100 Rogues? And yeah, looks similar to SoF, but different too. Gameplay is a bit similar, but graphic style looks very different. I like the mystery/shroud of darkness that SoF has - 100 Rogues doesn't seem to have that - seems very bright and colorful. I may still give it a go though if I'm not completely bogged down by this update and other games.

You know, I know it sounds crazy but... we just might submit this weekend. I don't see why we won't. I'm practically done with gameplay, just putting some finishing touches and refinements. Some text updates and other misc. polish, and we should be good to go.

Think I'm kidding? Think again... ;)
