Death is permanent. So yeah. Sorry I figured everyone knew about this aspect of the game, believe it or not it's the draw for a lot of us. Yeah, it's not supposed to make much sense. It wasn't offensive though. It just felt like it fit. If Freud psychoanalyzed me, he'd probably say it was a sign of comradry of some sort. And he'd probably be right.
What further proof do you people need? The guys is a scam artist! While you're slavishly playing the game he's got process going on in the background searching your network to find out your favorite movies and where you had dinner last night. Bank account and credit card numbers are for amateurs, what Madgarden has planned is far more insidious. Clearly the endless delays for this update are directly tied into his failed attempts to get his Beta Ray Brain Scanner fully functional and have nothing to do with this supposed "game" he uses as his cover. As the group They Might Be Giants put it best, "WAKE UP AND SMELL THE CAT FOOD IN YOUR BANK ACCOUNT!"
What do you mean, "failed attempts" LordGek? the puppeteer, yes death is permanent, however the update has 3 difficulty modes, and the EASY mode will respawn your dead guy at the last temple you visited, so you don't have to die forever if that's the way you like to play. Win win!
And, for those of you who have defective senses of humor / broken sarcasm meters, LordGek is obviously joking! I understand what Madgarden's going through here. You get an idea on how to improve the game, plan an update... then as you get into it, you realize it's much more complicated than that. He's actually making what amounts to a brand new game (with the old one still available to play as well at "normal" difficulty). Trying to mesh new ideas into an early 1980s game, while maintaining balance and FUN is not easy. I should know So far I think he's been doing a great job. Everyone should be pleased with the final results!
...and all in my spare time. *bows* Thanks Kevin! And once it's released, you'll all forget you were ever waiting for it, heh.
This is what im waiting for..... The edge of your seat "I might die" experience definately appeals to some people, but there are alot of us that just wanna experience the game without the chance of throwing our itouch against the wall =P.
Quick question, Paul. When one submits a (free) update to Apple, is their approval process a great deal shorter in time? Cheers.
This is another game I am seriously considering...if I were to start it now I'd have to start over again once the update goes live to get the new features though, right?
Damn it Vovin! You're like the guy at work who's always trying to get the alcoholic co-worker out for a drink!
Ok so the Monday 9.10-9.14am deadline came and went, can you please confirm Mr Garden when the update was submitted? Proof shall be required to avoid any penalties that were previously agreed
No joking - this game - in its current state - is already very addicting and fun to play. A few days ago, I played for a few minutes, took one level... went down another, dropped two more accidentally and... ah, who cares, lets go down another level... after this I had a look at the clock - and 3 hours just went away, unnoticed. After the update there will be a helluva more fun. (... at least I hope so) Well, the conrols are great (you have an invisible d-pad everywhere you set your finger down), the gameplay is absolutely retro, just like the old title - but visually way more appealing right now and I'm not alone saying that the devs did a great job on that. Last but not least: the replay value is at 150%.
I can't decide if I should buy this game. I'm a big fan of Nethack, ADOM, MORIA, and the like. My worry is that this game will be too simple for my refined roguelike tastes. What do?
At least in it's current state, Fargoal probably IS a little on the easy side for a skilled player. It definitely doesn't affect the fun factor, it's still a blast to play. But if you take your time and level up appropriately you shouldn't have a hard time beating the game. However the upcoming update addresses this in quite a few different ways, the most notable being the addition of a Legend difficulty. There's no weak monsters, and you can only see enemies in the light surrounding your character. It's overall satisfyingly brutal, and I can tell you that this will be the only setting I'll be playing on. You can't go wrong buying the game now, and seeing what it's all about while waiting for the update. The new difficulty settings really make this game appealing to brand new players and fickle veterans alike. Also, do you already have Rogue Touch? That's a more old school roguelike that ate up dozens upon dozens of hours of my life in the last year. If you're a fan, you owe it to yourself to own both
How does Rogue Touch address the issue of not having an entire keyboard? I figured Sword of Fargoal probably simplified the system to not needing all the keys, but looking at Rogue Touch's screenshots, I am immediately reminded of Nethack and couldn't imagine playing it with a stilted control scheme. I think I'll buy Sword of Fargoal in anticipation of the Legend mode, but I'm still holding out on Rogue Touch for now.
I just wanted to say I agree with this and I don't think anyone could have put it better. And this may sound strange, but I don't want the update to come out. Because then I'll be glued to my phone for another month+. Paul you musn't release an update. My life is at stake.
