I was wondering the same thing. From the sounds of it, and the work you've put in, it goes WELL beyond an update. This could end up even more work but have you considered just adding a few of the new things in normal Fargoal as a sort of taster for the sequel but also as a declaration of finishing that iteration off (not that it's not finished already) and releasing Fargoal 2 as a whole new app? You'd easily have the Fargoal faithful and a full-on sequel app may actually be more of a talking point for websites, even though it's essentially the same thing as you're planning to release already.
I think we ask ourselves the same question from time to time. The big reasons I keep returning to are 1) our word is important to us and 2) Fargoal faithfuls can't carry us alone. We don't have a large enough user base currently. Those are my two main sticking points. Now of course I could write you a book on these two points alone and why we're going the route we're going. Or it could just be that we're foolish.
I'll happily pay again just to get access to a Beta at this point Regardless, I think there was a plan to IAP additional classes? I'll certainly be buying most ( if not all ) of those.
But didn't SoF go for free for a bit? How many more sales do you really expect once the 2.0 update hits? Promises or not, I think releasing it as a new app would probably be the best decision. And I don't think people would be offended, if it really is as big of a change as it seems.
sure, all of what you are suggesting makes sense. There are additional factors that make our decision what it is. I don't really want to get into our business decisions in depth though. Maybe Madgarden will come along and do that. trystero: Yep. IAP classes is still in the plan! Teh_Ninja: It's going well!
If we released SoF2 as a separate app, then we'd have a confusing combination of Fargoal 1 for iPhone, Fargoal 1.x Legends (universal), and Fargoal 2. Fargoal 1.x for iPhone would be a bit of an odd duck, and not really worth having in the store at all with Legends being universal and all. So, we're recycling the "duplicated" app and upgrading to 2.0. I believe that there are a lot of people who may only own Legends, and therefore will want to pay for Fargoal 2 (which is a separate app from Legends). Then we have a very logical "classic" Legends version, and the "sequel" in Fargoal 2. Mrs.Madgarden... Cool cave.
Love the variety in floor textures. I am so ridiculously itching for new Fargoal. Easily my most wanted game. Gears of War 3? Yeah, so that's cool but, really, it's about the Fargoal. Considering it's building on one of the most intuitive, streamlined and fun roguelikes, how could I not be itching for it?
Oh I'm sure I would have noticed if that happened again (it's less unpleasant than you'd think). In the current available versions, are the two Fargoals essentially the same or is Legends one step behind? I remember new stuff being added in the last big iPhone update but not sure if it made it to Legends.
Since legends won't get 2.0, any plans for sof2.0 to go universal or to add a iPad version? If not that's fine, but I wouldn't mind paying to have sof2.0 iPad. I know your a small dev so don't take that as a complaint, just curious.
I believe Legends is now the most up-to-date, however mainly it just received some HD/retina fixes and such... so they are both the same as far as features otherwise. Yes, when it's all done, we will have two fully universal Fargoal versions... Legends and 2.0. It will be the dawning of the age of Aquarius.
OK wobblez... taken with a grain of salt, I would really like to have it ready for Hallowe'en. Knock on wood, etc.
OK, I don't want to p1ss you off Garden but, come on, you are surely taking the biscuit. End of October now? Have a look through your posts from last year, I quote.... 6th December 2010 - The most realistic ETA for 2.0 is early January. 15th January 2011 - It'll be done when it's finished and awesome, that is all. END OF LINE. 3rd February 2011 - Release date will be closer to the end of February, but things are going very well at this point. 21st February 2011 - Nope, not quite. It's all coming together nicely though... she'll be in the app store by spring. 1st April 2011 - Can't give a date yet. Soon... always soon... 2nd June 2011 - It'll be done when it's ready. Or, when I've almost run out of money, whichever comes first. Today - OK wobblez... taken with a grain of salt, I would really like to have it ready for Hallowe'en. Are you serious??? It really doesn't matter when I or anyone else asks about v2.0 because it's always 6 weeks away. Look back, 5th December 2010, it's now nearly a year later and all we've got are some screenies and empty promises. The worst part is the Fargoal page on iTunes reads: "COMING SOON - Fargoal 2 FREE upgrade" and has done for months now. In my book that's false advertising and you should remove it to be honest. I appreciate you are working hard on it etc etc but step back out of the box and look in from where we stand. Can't you see the point I'm making. Now, this is the final time I will ask this and I really believe everyone here deserves an honest answer: when will Fargoal v2.0 be ready?? I am removing Fargoal from my Hall of Fame list in my sig and will gladly reinstate it if v2.0 is worth waiting over a year for. - Wobblez.
