Me, too, del. I was a roguelike game virgin until last winter. I'm not even sure why I picked up Fargoal in the first place, but I read TA reviews religiously, so probably it was a review that persuaded me to try it. And I was pretty certain I wouldn't like it. Now, look at me: it's by far my favorite game and I've wasted...uh, spent.. a gazillion hours in the dungeons, died many deaths, and convinced my husband (yet again) that I am out of my mind.
Doffie, have you played any of the other similar games? There was a discussion of other roguelikes going on in the 'general' section a few days ago, but I guess it's okay to broaden the topic in here. What you think of the others? I thought 100 rogues was pretty good, though ultimately less addictive (because of the shorter lifespan), and maybe a little more frustrating. I'm going to try Rogue Touch one of these days, too, though it's sure to kick my ass.
Yes, i've tried both of those, del, but didn't stick with either one. I think perhaps if I had played other roguelikes before, I might like them better. But, I find them much less accessible than Fargoal for someone who is not a hardcore gamer. And, even more important, I need really attractive and atmospheric visuals to draw me into a game, to make me feel that I _am_ my hero. And I find the graphics, the spooky sounds, the music, and the gorgeous cut scenes (descending the stairs to lower dungeons) really compelling in Fargoal. On the other hand, games like Chaos Rising, with all it's beautiful design and graphics, don't attract me much because I feel like I'm living someone else's adventure, and not creating my own.
I love Fargoal, but I have to say that I think my true Rogue-like love is Rogue Touch. I love having to identify all the items, choosing and upgrading your weapon and armor, and the variety of baddies and the horrible things they can do to you. It just seems deeper and more intricate than Fargoal. That said, I was able to get into Fargoal immediately, and it took me longer to do that for Rogue Touch. I think the bottom line is that we have some fantastic Rogue-like options on the App store thanks to awesome and dedicated developers.
Indeed, variety is the spice of life, as they say. Fargoal 2.0 aims to kick it up a notch, so that tons of all sorts of new variety becomes the spice of DEATH. This is not your grandpappy's Fargoal.
Bribing Me Down Recently I decided that my self-confidence was too high. So I started a couple of Legend games. My modesty and realism have returned to normal. Don't think I've ever gotten killed so quickly and brutally.
A big honking sword, armor and helmet, a potion pedestal, and is that a belt? WHAT MADNESS LIES OUTSIDE MY WINDOW?
I'm always around my friend. Haven't played Fargoal for a couple of months now tbh, waiting for the 2.0 upgrade.
KushyKush, also Apple's Game Center is around the corner. We'll see what we can do. One thing you will certainly get is a local "Hall of Heroes" and "Hall of the Dead" leaderboard, chronicling the adventures of past adventurers. Also, Hero 2.0:
