Yes, that's exactly what I do --- try to avoid temples until I think I might have sufficient gold. Getting blessed, enchanted, and having one's shield renewes all at once causes me to make loud hooray shouts. Drives my husband mad. Drives me very happy!
I have walked over temples at full health before but have gotten no enchantment: Do I need a certain amount of money for it?
Just to clarify, that's every 2k cumulative, it can be over several sacrifices. Doesn't have to be 2k all at once, thankfully, or nobody would get blessed until they were on floor 15 at least...
In regards to the idea that was bouncing around earlier about adding new armors and such, let me just say that I love the idea, especially with the swap mechanic. However, if I may, I'd like to revive one idea from the Fargoal forums... the ability to carry a second shield. While the idea of carrying multiple suits of armor (as happens in some rougelikes like Castle of the Winds) is ludicrous, it's not uncommon to see (in movies and such) an adventurer with a shield strapped across his back (Link, anyone?). It would be truly amazing to have a studded leather on hand for when that damn fyredrake splits your metal shield, or (even better) a reflective shield that you could ready when the Mage approaches, allowing you to temporarily shelve the Dragonscale, without worrying about some pesky Swordsman or Warlord picking it up. As a slight nerf, you could make it so that an enemy could steal it, like any other stowed item. I think it would alleviate some of the "oh-god-I'm-surrounded-without-a-shield-I'm-gonna-die" stress, without overpowering any shield, or overpowering the character. Thoughts?
I'm still pretty resistant to the idea. For one, you basically have the shield strapped to your arm, and you're lucky you can even use a wand with that there. But also, you're carrying all of the other stuff like potions, scrolls, orbs etc. in a hypothetical back pack. As well, we'll be adding ranged weapons to be carried around too. So the game will really be about making the decision as to what your hero should be carrying, not just grabbing it all and having it all ready. Travel light and just be awesome. And don't forget... 1.0 didn't have shields, how did people even survive?
Hmm. Well, last things first, I didn't know that about V1.0... I wasn't "around" in those days. And I get what you're saying, for sure... Just to clarify one point, though, I don't mean being able to carry several shields for every situation, just a single extra, that can be "hot swapped." Just a thought.
Heh yep I getcha... but I just want you to take a look at these pictures: Lean and mean, ready for action. Imagine doing all of that with a bunch of heavy stuff hanging off of you, clonking and jangling around, interfering with your battle and agile movements and basically unbalancing you.
Yeah, I dunno about the ability to carry a second shield. I get a kick outta my "oh sh*t" moments when I have run into a situation and realize the shield I swapped out a floor back would have come in really handy about now. It's part of the adventure, for me, I suppose. I think having the ability to carry two would take away from that. Just a thought anyway for the other side of that suggestion.
Fair enough. I understand, and I do agree with you, Mrs. M... The frantic scramble for some sort of shield is a bit of a thrill. And Madgarden, despite Dirk the Daring being an incurable klutz, I bow to your most valid points. However, I may have a solution/compromise, in the form of an ultra-rare item... I present, for your consideration... The Patsy! Able to carry hundreds of potions, scrolls, orbs, and shields, while still leaving your heroic hands free for the execution of equally heroic deeds! And the peasants rejoiced! (<_<) Yeah, ok. I'm scraping now. *sigh*
Ok seriously... If the patsy made coconut clopping sounds and had the potential to be killed... that would be incredible
Ok, how about swords that can be picked up? Like rusty sword, long sword, golden sword, platinum sword, dragon tooth sword etc. Same with clothes. Clothes could go on the seemingly bare tables in some rooms. (Pickup when nearby) and that could change how your character looks. Just like, a wider variety of equipment?
Ok, I do have one addendum to what I said earlier about the Temple blessings... to get the enchantment, you have to have 100% HP, AND be completely healthy. I just got a blessing at 100% HP, but I was groggy. Instead of my shiny enchantment, I got "You are cured!" Yay! I was cured of sleepiness! Instead of getting a permanent enchantment... woo... damn. Dungeon needs a coffeemaker.
