The Sword of Fargoal is somewhere in the depths of the dungeon, waiting for you to find it and bring it back to the surface. It's no easy task. Not only do you need to find your way around each maze-like floor to discover the stairs down to the next level, but you also need to survive any traps and monsters you stumble across on your travels. Each time you play, the dungeon and its contents change. You'll find plenty of help along the way- tools, equipment, and magic spells. You never quite know what you'll find in the dungeon, but if you make the most of what you discover, you may well survive long enough to put your hands on the legendary blade itself. Of course, escaping with the sword is another task entirely. - Endless Questing: With a different dungeon to tackle every time you play, you'll never run out of adventures! - Become a Hero: Battle monsters, gather gold, and make offerings at temples to increase your power! - Awesome Treasure: Find a variety of spells, magical amulets, and mysterious orbs to help you on your journey! - Terrifying Monsters: Keep your wits about you to avoid defeat at the claws of grisly Gargoyles, powerful Shadow Dragons, invincible Demons, and many more. Even your fellow humans can't be trusted! - Multiple Difficulty Settings: Enjoy unlimited lives in Squire Mode, take on the standard Hero Mode, or try to tackle the ultimate challenge in Legend Mode! ***Supports MFi, XBox, and PlayStation Controllers*** ************************************************** GameClub is a subscription mobile gaming service. CommanderData Well-Known Member Patreon Indie Nov 2, 2008 1,196 9 38 http://www.ChronoSoft.com #8 CommanderData, Dec 1, 2009 Well, my first impressions are great! You can get a little tutorial on how to play, then jump into the game- Multiple save slots are there, and you can choose between a male and female avatar. The fog effects are neat, nice ripples on the edges as you explore. Something to get used to is the monsters will hunt you down while you sit idle, unlike in Rogue Touch, so no setting the game down for a minute without pausing... found that out the hard way! Exiting the game by pressing home saves exactly where you left off, and there is a "fast start" option to get right back into the game again when you re-open it. So yeah, I like it a lot, but I am a roguelike fiend anyway CommanderData Well-Known Member Patreon Indie Nov 2, 2008 1,196 9 38 http://www.ChronoSoft.com #9 CommanderData, Dec 1, 2009 It is strange... Something I found out later, maybe it is even in the quick tutorial, but there is a key difference in being the attacker or a defender in a little engagement! While the to hit odds and damage I think are identical either way, as an Attacker you are free to simply move away when the battle isn't going so well but if the battle started because YOU were attacked, you can only Teleport out of it or Shield (temporarily become near invulnerable). Healing can only be done outside of battle or will trigger automatically if in negative hp (actually if you have a potion of Restore that will be used first which will bring you instantly back up to full hp) but even with that auto healing, if knocked too far down (more than a single healing potion can save) your character will pass from this world. CommanderData Well-Known Member Patreon Indie Nov 2, 2008 1,196 9 38 http://www.ChronoSoft.com #12 CommanderData, Dec 1, 2009 Yes, I'm impressed with the mixture of shiny and retro that they managed to come up with here... And an added bonus, this is the first roguelike that I have played in a while that I don't already know all the monsters, magic, and secrets of (obviously know Rogue Touch and iNetHack like the back of my hand )! FYI, I told Madgarden that this thread was started for him and the game, so hopefully he can join in the discussion soon. Anyway, I'm going to play it some more, and hopefully give a more detailed set of impressions on it soon. Anyone else playing Fargoal already? squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,685 1,206 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #13 squarezero, Dec 1, 2009 I was very skeptical when TA covered this on the front page; I haven't been able to get into any of the roguelike games that have made it to the app store, and even though I did plenty of dungeon crawling back in my Apple II days, I haven't felt particularly nostalgic about rogues in the first place. Frankly, it seemed kind of perverse to make such a simple RPG in this day and age -- like riding a 1970's Schwinn simply because it's "cool" (never mind that it's a clunker). Still, I'd made up my mind to pick Sword of Fargoal when it came out, if only to diss it from an informed perspective. Well, color me stunned. Sword of Fargoal is quite simply a beautiful game. From the opening animation, to the UI typography, to the subtle 3D of the dungeon walls, to the pixel-art creatures, to the incidental sounds and soft soundtrack, everything about the game is lovingly crafted. The swipe controls are intuitive and very responsive, items and spell easily accessible. During fights the camera pulls closer to the action, adding excitement to an otherwise straightforward combat system. A wide range of traps and other environmental hazards add to the fun and keep the game from getting repetitive (so far, anyway) -- watch out for those magic mushrooms! What a treat! I'm so glad I picked it up!
