    In an alternate reality
This whole flu thing (the overblown nature of it) is one big, fat, giant
Fnord. "They" are trying to keep us at a low level state of panic because fear causes adrenaline levels to rise, and adrenaline in certain quantities can act just like sodium amitol (which is a type of truth serum), and being in a low level state of panic all the time makes us produce small amounts of adrenaline, thereby keeping us all "doped up" on our own natural chemicals, which makes us more "suggestible", and since the fear over terrorism is dying down, "they" need something us to keep us afraid and suggestible, so "they" created this "flu scare" to keep us at that low level state of panic, and...

*sound of door being broken down and men with black suits and dark glasses enter, start confiscating stuff*

"Step away from the computer, sir. Please come with us..."

i think the general idea behind it is this (just my understanding of it)

if a virus has the chance it can learn to "recognize" a drug and it will be come immune to it

Generally, if a person has influenza (or the regular flu) it can be treated with several different drugs. However, somewhere along the line this virus became immune to most of them (usually by someone only completing half a treatment, the virus ends up living and recognizes the drug that was attacking it... the virus is then passed on and the drug doesn't work anymore).

the scare is, if this new virus ends up immune to ALL the drugs, there would be absolutely no treatment. i would understand it being a big deal in mexico as people without health care there could die from it.

if you live in canada, the US or most of europe, etc. you should be fine... its still treatable... just not pleasant to go through

and it is definitely overblown... i mean, the CDC is planning on raising the alert level to the MAX? what happens when there is an ACTUAL pandemic?

It's not just America. Leaders of Europe are coming together to discuss the matter and what might be done about it.

But I agree with the general sentiment in this thread that it's blown out of proportion, though when hearing news stories about how healthy people get sick and then die from it is disturbing.

i'm really mad that egypt decided to just go and kill 300,000 pigs

    first of all

    unless they're food

    what a waste of life

    second of all

    not the government's property

    third of all
eating pork cannot pass on the swine flu, and no pigs have been found to be contaminated with the disease, hence its renaming to the H1N1 virus

    and fourth of all

egypt has NOTHING to do with the swine flu

    its just stupid

I heard that it was mostly due to a public outcry. It was the people's belief that pigs do pass it on, so the people wanted something to be done about it. I also believe that pigs are considered unclean animals in the Islamic faith, though please correct me if I am wrong, so they might be more inclined towards killing the animals because, well, they think they're unclean.

    WELL

Pigs are not unclean... they are one of the CLEANEST animals

Its because humans force them to live in their own sh*t sometimes that it gets out of hand

    Here's a link explaining it http://www.gan.ca/animals/pigs.en.html

And according to this, from a CNN article:

Most Egyptian pig farmers are Coptic Christians, a group that makes up about 10 percent of the 80 million people in the mostly Muslim nation. Coptic Christians do not observe the Muslim ban on eating pork, and historically they have coexisted peacefully with the Muslim majority in Egypt.

To be honest, it's still ridiculous.

Pigs are unclean according to the book of Deuteronomy; so Jews, Muslims and Christians do not eat pork (or at least it is forbidden by scripture.)

I think by 'unclean' they do not mean it literally, it doesn't refer to the actual cleanliness of the animal, but more or less the 'religious' kind of unclean.. I'm having a hard time explaining it because I'm not religious, therefore I don't understand it very well myself.

EDIT: Thanks to Starjimstar for clarifying it for us.

it is a vary different place to america or england or most of europe. Whilst it is not the 'right' thing to do you have to understand that their religious views have a huge effect on their lives
