Heres a new video for you showing a few of the new electric elements at work.

The new elements used are memory bank, 4-bit counter and a sound generator.

I will try to explain the new electrics in more detail in this and the upcoming posts. Of course, in-game there is help text associated with each of the blocks, but because of screen space shortage only a brief description is possible there.

First of all, I want to explain how the analog electric signals work.
Analog Signals

In 1.22, all signals were digital, which means they had only two possible values. Lets call these two values 0V and 1.5V (V stands for volts).

In 1.23, all the values between 0 and 1.5 volts (in 0.1V increments) are available as well. That is, a signal can have a value of 0.5V or 1.1V, for example. 16 different signal values are possible.

The key to understanding is the fact that such a signal can be interpreted in three different ways by various electric devices:

As a one-bit digital signal, with values between 0V and 0.7V meaning low, and 0.8V to 1.5V meaning high. For example a lightbulb or a diode will use this interpretation to switch itself on or off. This interpretation was the one used in 1.22, so it should be familiar to you.
As a continuous analog signal. Motion detector, photodiode, thermometer, hygrometer, pressure plate will all output this type of value, signalling by how much they have been activated. For example a pressure plate signal value will depend on weight of the item placed on it. Photodiode will tell you how much light there is, not just whether there is any light at all. Motion detector will tell you how close to the detector a moving object is. Et cetera.
As a four bit digital signal. 16 possible values mean there are really 4 bits of information being passed. Certain electric devices will interpret the signal as four separate bits. For example, a 4-pixel LED will display state of each of the bits separately. 7-segment display uses the values of the bits to produce a hexadecimal character to be displayed. All the logic gates (AND, OR, NOT, XOR, delay) will act on each bit separately if fed an analog value.

Its important to remember that the signal in all cases is the same, and can be carried by a single wire. What is different is how various devices react to it.

Finally, one great thing about the new system is that it is backwards compatible with the old one. All existing electric devices will continue to work as if nothing has changed. If you prefer, you can ignore the analog and keep thinking of signals as digital (i.e. using #1 interpretation above exclusively).

Its easy to see why this must be so. The old-style circuits only really use the highest bit of the 4-bit signal. If this bit is set, the signal is interpreted as high, if its not set, its low. The remaining 3 bits are ignored. These extra bits only come to life when some new electric device is fed the signal and can make use of them.

An improvement with enemies spawning a bit crazily around the player would be a great thing to see in an update! Also, the hunger system seems a bit imbalanced. Food doesn't last long during the day and, in my opinion, hinders the exploraton time a bit; it gets kind of exhausting constantly looking for something to eat.

The 1.23 release time has come. Heres the plan.

As usual, the first platform to get the new version will be Google Play. I hate to repeat myself over and over, but the reason for that is it doesnt need a lengthy certification or review step, as all other platforms do. This means I can release quick bugfixes in a matter of hours, not weeks.

In fact, the early Google Play release has always been a beta test. I did all the testing I could myself, but with the size of the game and number of new features, it is inevitable that there will issues. A couple million users out there (last time I checked) will find them all in no time.

Once all the beta bugs have been found and fixed on Google Play, I will submit for all other platforms (Amazon, Windows Phone, iOS). In the past it usually took a few days to get to this stage.

I love survival craft. I actually just learned today how to build an elevator, freakin neat. One think id like to see is a hot bar with another couple of spaces, 4 just doesn't go very far amd when you're really into building things you are limited by constantly heading back to your inventory to switch items out. Regardless, this game really is great. I've been pondering new things to do with electronics and after watching the motion detector video, I think I may have a way to set traps that will open to drop your prey without the need to trick them at all.

When I first saw it I couldn’t believe it. The reason I added 4-leds is so that you can make good screens with them. The reason I added memory banks is so that you can store data to be displayed on them. And voila, it all clicks! Don’t tell me electrics don’t work

New weapon

Work on 1.24 is going well. The new weapon is causing some problems, but I think I will have them sorted soon.

As usual, a lot of guesses were correct. Have a look at the screenshot:

Of course, this has been long overdue. I remember thinking I should really add it soon as far back as 2011 Two years later and its still not in!

The new weapon is a lot more than just the bow itself, there is the entire supporting infrastructure in code that will let me do it properly and extend later, as opposed to quickly hacking it in a day.

Minecraft may be the superior game on PC, but on IOS, Survivalcraft is king. Without an infinite map or caverns, the maps just feel lacking in Minecraft PE
