Parkingtigers, yeah, I'm with you as far as the effort versus the actual reward. The seeds IMO is the biggest issue since you can only get them in the wild. What's the point of having a farm if you can't harvest your crop and get enough seeds to plant the next batch? I think hunting makes a lot more sense in the long run. Hopefully this changes and we can get some seeds back in the update that follows. Still, I'll probably set up a small farm just for a backup food source since hunger will become an issue.
In the video you get two bits of rye from each farm plot, so that's one to make bread and one to replant. You're making a net profit, the wild rye is just to get you started. 9 pieces of rye to make a loaf of bread though. That's three times as expensive as in Minecraft, plus you need the bucket for the cooking. Eh, I just remember how we all started with wheat farms in MC, and outgrew them very quickly once easier sources of food were found. Hunting is easier in SurvivalCraft, and farming is more intensive, so it's going to be a hard sell as far as a serious food source goes. The big advantage is planting before going on a long caving/mining trip. Hopefully it will still grow if the player moves away from the farm area. Then it'll be worth it, come up for air with pockets full of ore and a harvest waiting to be gathered. The saltpeter as fertilizer is a worry. I haven't found ANY of that stuff yet, and when I do I want to hoard it for gunpowder. Seems wasteful to use it on crops. I left a comment on the vid that I'd like cows and horses to drop dung from time to time. Gathering that to use as fertilizer would make having a field of cows a useful thing to have right now, beyond just milk production. Even without breeding or such, a herd would have a purpose, and corralling them would be a fun thing to do. Does anyone actually use milk as their main food source yet? I've not reached a point where I trapped a herd, and I have so many eggs and roast birds that food isn't something I even think about. Milking cows looks like it would be an easy way to keep a sustainable supply of food around. Do they despawn? There are lots of little things that I know about Minecraft, yet which I don't know about SurvivalCraft at this time. How often they can be milked, if they'll stay around if enclosed in a field etc. Must see if there is a wiki for all this.
I didn't see that. Ah, on second view I see sometimes it does drop a second bit... but they look the same. I guess we can plant harvested rye... that makes more sense. Fertilizer is an option it seems, not a requirement. Getting a bucket isn't too hard. I think maybe I'll build a nice big biodome so when the update hits I can have a head start to farming. I'll make water paths or something so it's easy to get around during harvest without needing to touch the round and potentially have to re-rake it.
Salt peter is found in the desert. If you dig down far enough, it's there. There is quite alot of it too.
Oh really? Didn't have nearby desert in my old or new world. Looks like I'll be taking a journey inland at some point. Need to find a good place to stripmine sand anyway.
Halfslabs above a stream of water is a popular way of hiding the irrigation and walking through farmland. I'll probably go with that. I'd prefer farmland not to be destroyed when the player walks across it. It seems to be low chance of it happening, but still a bit annoying. That used to be in MC too, but everyone hated it and they took it out. You could walk slowly across to avoid destroying farmland, but the sneak button doesn't work the same way here so not an option. It's not a dealbreaker, just a bit annoying. Yup the fertilizer is optional. I'm glad there is no magic instagrow item too. Not needed, especially as farming will be something you work up to anyway. The description said it'll grow faster, and more of it. I'm most interested to see how planting on non-farmland works. Said if will work, with lower yields. I imagine the rye will grow indoors/underground. Hydrated soil and plenty of light seem to be the only requirements so torches or electric lights should do the job. Will have to test to see if water flows can harvest the rye. That would pave the way for semi-automated farming down the line if/when pistons get added. Tamed a horse finally. I like how they move, they control like a living animal and not an extension of the player. Rode under a tree and died. Grr. Had been warned about that, but wasn't expecting it to be so sudden or violent. Found my horse again, but lost my stuff. Like to think the horse ate it all. Be careful riding through forests people.
Me neither. Games are supposed to be fun more than anything. This looks like a chore more than anything else once the update hits.
Actually pretty moved about the update myself. The biggest problem currently is that you quickly lose any feeling of danger, and you absolutely don't have to interact with the exterior world when you start digging. Now, you'll have to hunt, rest, grow some food and so on. Sounds fun to me, rather than the digging / building / digging / building cycle ad vitam eternam
I play this game mainly to build stuff. If it does seem too tedious, I either wouldn't update for the moment or I'd play the creative mode. It's always nice to see updates, keeps things fresh to have something new all the time.
I only use creative mode to build and love doing that so for me I would sooner far more things like furniture and decorations to be added than stuff like farming
Random question, does anyone know where i can get in touchwith Kaalus? Idk if he knows that the game runs so poorly on iPod Touch 4, and I have some other things I'd like to request.
Official forums, or his blog, probably. But don't try to contact him directly - I don't think it'll work out.
An actual functioning farm, whether you use it or not, is one of the most decorative things you can have. A field of rye, fences around it, a scarecrow, a farmhouse, a windmill. I have reasons to make all these things now. We do need more blocks. Lots and lots more blocks. This addition is great for those that want to expand their natural looking terrain.
Don't get me wrong, I can fully appreciate farming and what it brings to this great game and yes it will also add an extra dimension. On a personnel level I love creating buildings and interiors and simply wish I could fully scratch my creative urges with a ton of stuff to make a completely different building each time but I also realise the game is different things to different players
Wish there were more efficient ways to catch these beasts. If he keeps adding animals, I'm thinking I should build a zoo.
Awesome. Lions, yay! Question for mestre: do you have any affiliations with Survivalcraft or you just a dedicated fan? Cause you're always the one to post Kaalus' updates here, every single time Just curious
