Hah! I think that is a rite of passage in these types of games. I think everyone burns down their house first time they try and make a fireplace. You were lucky, most of us do this without the foresight to have a bucket of water handy.
First time I made matches I was so excited! My new match in hand I rushed out to see what I could burn. That's when I learned you can't open a door with matches in hand.
If you read the recipedia, it'll tell you how to grow trees. Planting an oak tree in the tundra won't give you a tree. It's pretty realistic btw. I should finish a bit more of Brunhelm and show a screenie for you guys :3
So I've bought my copy of Survivalcraft today and have to say that both genres make a very nice mix. The game looks very good, colourful and detailed, even in its pixelated state. I think I'll stick to this quite some time.
I tried not to laugh at your misfortune. I really did. Held it in for a good five seconds, but I'm weak.
Half an afternoon vanished exploring a deep cave mine and building a bridge that makes it easier to get back to the hill fort. The stone structures on the peaks serve as markers. The cave mine where I've found coal, iron and germanium so far is on the left side. I've done up the entrance and put in doors because there is always a black bear wandering about outside. When I was working on the bridge, the black bear would wander by and give me a stern stare before turning around and going away. I had a machete on me, but I didn't feel the need to go after it unless it came after me first. (I like how the animals behave in this game.)
I can't help but be reminded of the castle in Demon Souls. Cool just imagining exploring a structure like yours. Enjoyed reading the posts about other people's experiences too. Side of mountains, along rock surfaces. Or in caves.
This. A million times this. There's something so great about the way a wolf or bear will just stare at you, and you freeze wondering if it's going to attack you or just walk away. It's also great that sometimes they'll break off a fight and run away, which is so different from the Minecraft mobs that just want to suicide themselves on your weapons. There's a delicious unpredictability about these animals, which is exactly as it should be.
@parkingtiger Ha, it's all good. I laughed too. Especially after I'd watched half my house burn down and then realized I had a bucket. Then laughed more at the terrible mess I made with the water failing miserably to put it out. And then laughed even more when I saw that the fire had burned my mineshaft's ladder away clear down to the bedrock. My favorite death was when I threw a spear at a stone wall and it bounced back and killed me.
So you can make a fireplace that provides light like a torch? And make matches? Didnt know any of this --- Theoretical question: is it possible to make a greenhouse? Enclosed structure, put lights on the ceiling for night growing, glass walls for sunlight during the day, dirt floor, fireplaces for heat... Would that work?
You can craft coal blocks with 9 coal chunks. Then make matches with sulfur and sticks and you can light the coal blocks and they'll keep burning indefinitely. I'm pretty sure that the burning coal blocks will melt snow near them so then it must be increasing the temperature. The problem is that there isn't really anything to grow in the greenhouse. Trees seem to be the only important growing item at the moment and you can grow spruce in snow so you wouldn't even need to heat up for them. Now if you wanted to make a cool looking greenhouse in the middle of the tundra and plant flowers inside it that'd work although I don't know if the flowers will propagate other flowers, I think you'd have to just plant them all by hand.
How do you constantly know what to build? I'm just putting signs down to where I'm supposed to build and what it's supposed to be so I don't forget it it looks quite amazing though. You know, in my cruel world, I captured 4 horses early game, 2 have already died. I think I need to supply them with water but I haven't even found any malachite. Tis a shame.
So at the start of the game it's not easy to make a torch? This kinda sucks when I'm digging looking for coal the game gets to dark to see.
