Thanks for these dude, it's great to see there are some really interesting cave structures underground. I love poking through caves seeing what was randomly created, and stuff like this encourages me to find more.
More on the stamina implementation. This was his response to my comment, thought I'd share it here. http://kaalus.wordpress.com/2013/05/09/stamina/#comment-22124 I'm a bit less worried.
Maybe he should include the ability to feed your animals. Oh and could we have animals specific saddles? One for horse and one for camel. Maybe Giraffe, I want a Giraffe. Anyways, I think your animals should get hungry from time to time and you have to provide it with the neccessities like water and food, if not, the animal won't function at max capacity or something, oh and do cows actually drop bacon? Shouldn't it be steak? :/ oh and no stamina, just hunger for the horses
I really hope the additions will improve the gameplay. Hunger is great, it gives a good incentive to carry food around, and requires hunting / farming if you don't want to die. Having to sleep... kinda meh, but well, it kinda makes sense. Stamina, in its current implementation seems "meh" to me. Breathing is too loud, and it doesn't feel like it adds much to the gameplay (since there's no way to walk without hearing the breathing / becoming winded)
The breathing sound is so bad. It sounds like a sex offender outside a pre-school. Honestly if I wanted to hear someone getting out of breath climbing a hill I'd go outside and ... climb a hill. Videogames are where I go to get away from feelings of physical inadequacy.
I really don't think stamina is going to be the big time sink that some believe it to be. We stop more than we realize. Like when in the player inventory menu or when waiting for the animal you just killed to drop meat. Also, don't forget that we have horses, camels, and boats. The only thing I'd change is remove the beeping sound. I also think that people are viewing this as a change that he's making on a lark, without much thought, just to be different. In reality this has been the direction that Survivalcraft has always been headed, it's just taken him a while to get all the basics down first. Check out this blog post of his from a year and half ago, for example:http://kaalus.wordpress.com/2012/02/03/thoughts-on-survival-mode-mechanics/ Hopefully after he gets stamina and hunger and sleep implemented he'll be able to work on player temperature. Everywhere in the game already has a set temperature and humidity, it'd be cool if it'd actually affect the player, necessitating clothing as protection from the elements.
I'd like to be able to increase my inventory space in some way if more necessities are need for the character to survive. I'm not so against the stamina thing now, but I hope he gets that the panting sound is awful. I think I prefer a status bar for indication. or else I will have to turn the sound off.
I like the idea of more survival aspects in the game but the current planned stamina system is not realistic. I, a slightly overweight dude (which the dude in the game is not overweight), can walk all day long without getting winded. Even going up and down hills. Running/sprinting is where stamina should play in... which would also aid in hunting. But Animals need the same kind of stamina system... where they can't chase you forever without getting winded themselves. The way the system is now, you may not escape a pack of wolves, bear, bore, or bull because your stamina could easily wear out at the wrong moment. That's not realistic. Adding realism to me would mean adding plant based materials to harvest for food. Most folks have seen at least a part of a survivor man or other survival type show (not talking about survivor the reality contest). I think a good lesson for the dev would be to go play the Lost in Blue series on DS (or the Wii version). That's more realistic survival. If we need to eat then we should also need to gather fresh water and be able to cook. And survival should not be something that is a constant hinderance. In Lost in Blue it started out pretty hellish but then eased up as you got better at collecting supplies for your cave. Anyway my food for thought. .... I actually didn't play the game at all last night. I didn't play any game as I really wanted to get some sleep. But the game was still running through my mind. I think with the various gates I can make the light in my lighthouse animate. I think that's what I'm going to work on figuring out today. I may start a new save for testing so I don't mess up the current one. It's going to take some work, but I think it'll be super impressive to see that in action.
I thought they did. Give me a min... I'll load up... cut the top off a tree and see if it grows back. EDIT: OH SNAP... I loaded up my save with my little house on top of a mountain and it was storming... so I went out to cut a tree down and got struck by lightning which set me on fire. :O I luckily stopped panicking, opened up the pause menu and quit. Going to retry that in a second... hopefully I don't get killed. Doah... well, I loaded the save and was still on fire... I died... luckily I was near my house anyway so no big deal. ... Alright, cut a couple of trees down at several levels... jumped around so I would get tired enough to sleep and made a small nearby place to sleep and watch... nothing. Maybe I need to venture further away? Whatever the case... I'll try more stuff later.
No, you've got to plant more. Get some leaves and craft a stack into some saplings. Then plant a whole bunch of them because many will die. Go to sleep and they should be grown the next day. Different trees prefer different temperatures, you can see more information here on the developer's blog: http://kaalus.wordpress.com/2012/07/10/tree-planting-in-survival/ Also, while reading through all the older posts I noticed a question about forest fires. Yes, lightning will start trees on fire which can burn down your house if too close but actual forest fires are unlikely. The fire from lightning is nerfed to not spread too much. I've been playing this game for a while now on my Android device. It's really fun to see all the new players' reactions here, it's making me more excited about the game. The best thing MCPE has over SC is the community. There are a lot of MCPE resources and places to discuss it. I spend a lot of time on Reddit and there is very active community there. When I discovered Survivalcraft I looked for a similar community but there wasn't one so I started one at http://www.reddit.com/r/survivalcraftthegame. If anyone here is on Reddit feel free to stop by and post builds or questions or whatever SC related content you please.
I think the stamina will be ok but I agree that the panting is super annoying. The beginning of the panting sounds fine, I feel that lower level of panting should be maintained and not ramped up faster and faster like the little engine that could or I want a craftable steam whistle. Now my big Survivalcraft Oh Crap! Moment: There's danger even in creative as I saw on the survivalcraft forum tha someone used coal blocks for a fireplace fire so I decided to try it and placed the blocks in my beautiful fireplace and lit the coal. I stood back and gazed at the beautiful fire, then it happened something went wrong and the fire somehow set the house ablaze and me also. I grabbed the water bucket and put most of it out then spent the next two hours cleanin up the water and re building the 1/4 of the house I lost. Horrible? Yes but god I love this game!
