This is a fair and true statement. The great thing is that all the versions of these games, on all platforms, are still in development. MC on desktop is furthest ahead, and has the most features. Xbox MC is about a year behind, and is closing the gap slowly but steadily, within the confines of running on a 7 year old console. MCPE is ... well, it's so far behind in terms of features, and the update pace is glacial. SurvivalCraft is at a spot higher than MCPE, but behind Xbox Minecraft. For a mobile game, that's not a shameful place to be at all. I'm actually choosing to play SurvivalCraft over Xbox MC because as much as I enjoy playing online with friends, that requires a LIVE Gold membership which I'll be letting expire in August anyway. I'm also liking the different flavour of SurvivalCraft. I've only got time for one game like this, and I'm happy to throw spears at bears and dig coal on the train. Gives it the edge in my book, but I am also burned out on Minecraft Xbox after hundreds of hours at it. Ultimately it's a bit of an arms race. Who can update the fastest, provide the most features, give the best experience. SC has battered its way straight to the top of the mobile chart, and now is chasing the Xbox version. But as has been stated many times (often by me), this is a different enough experience that direct comparisons aren't always illustrative of the game. Sometimes I just want to explore a world and dig a hole, maybe build a small house. It's still amazing that an iPad game can scratch that itch so well. As someone already planning to go fully Sony in the next console-gen, Minecraft was the last Xbox exclusive that really was important to me. I'll fully admit that Xbox Minecraft is obviously much a much better and fuller experience than SurvivalCraft, but SC is "good enough" that I can happily get by without the Xbox version now.
For me, I'm more of a lone gunman when it comes to MC, so the 360 version's multiplayer isn't as big a deal to me especially since it doesn't have horses or as many real world animals and stuff to encounter in the wild. So the pros and cons list will vary. I play mostly portable games though and there's nothing so far that beats Survivalcraft for sandbox/building type games. What it does, it does exceptionally well.
I've bought that game yesterday to give it a go before going to sleep. I've slept two hours. But I've been digging good ! Addictive game... and I just can't wait for the next update, that survival stuff is exactly what I wanted to experience
SC is holding its own on the poll! What's the possibility of a landslide? --- Is there a way to stack tools and weapons in your inventory? Really frustrating when I go hunting and have 3/4ths of inventory filled with spears Any tips for hunting birds? Got my spear and I sneak up, but I can never get close before my prey flys off
Ha! You slept more than me lol. Looking at the above posts it seems common opinion that Xbox MC may have the edge in terms of features, and I wasn't dismissing the obvious benefits. No doubt the Xbox is a more powerful piece of kit and the software is probably deeper. I keep getting re-tempted to buy a console for one game, I probably won't cave in though as I just know sitting in front of a TV won't give me the same freedoms and immediate satisfaction. Hopefully Mojang will stop appearing so blasé about winning this "arms race". Why the hell it isn't on other consoles and getting non glacial updates is beyond me, surely in this day and age a video game cannot be too successful. There's more money to be made. Absolutely chuffed to know this game is still being worked on by the dev, one whom seems keen to listen to the requests of his fans. I cannot wait to see what comes in the next few updates... Maybe Kaalus could go one further and push his game onto consoles lol. That would be motivation for Monang to pull their finger out. A bit of healthy competition works wonders.
Personally I don't think this game could be the kind of success on console that it is on mobile devices. XBLA is flooded with numerous MC inspired games and on the Xbox, the divide between MC and similar games - in terms of quality and content - is massive IMO. On IOS, it's a different story. MCPE is fun but lackluster and other games like Block Fortress and Survivalcraft have stepped up, either with unique takes on the genre or provided features not seen in MCPE. So games like these can succeed much more easily on IOS. And Kaalus stands out even more due to the constant updates. Although I wouldn't mind Survivalcraft on PSN as a suitable replacement for MC. --- Reiterating my questions from before: - Can you stack tools and weapons in your inventory? - Tips for spear-hunting birds?
Heh. Right now SC is at the #1 spot in the UK AppStore Top Charts. Gratz to Kaalus, well deserved. What's more interesting is that MC is directly below it, now if my memory serves me rightly, MC hasn't been in the top 5 most days, or at times even visible. So rather than being detrimental to MC it could be seen that this beautiful game is not only faring amazingly, it's also doing MC a service. Possibly coincidence, but either way, it's good to see that there's room for more than one block builder. It doesn't always have to be about "clones" or piracy cannibalising other developers' hard earned cash.
They have an exclusive deal with Microsoft for MC on consoles. They did say when that deal is up they'd like to port to PS3. Here's the article: edge online I like the idea of the game on consoles, but I spend so little time in front of a tv gaming that it wouldn't do me much good. If I buy another device for gaming it'll be an iPad / iPad Mini. ... Yes I too am a bit tired thanks primarily to this game keeping me up a bit too late. It's been a while since a survival/building game like this has. Headphones though in the dark with the game at night and coyotes and other animals roaming around... that's a good creepy feeling.
You're probably right, though I guess in my mind I was focusing on the PSN store/mobile store. Since Playstation users have 0 block building games to enjoy, I'd welcome SC on my PS3 and more importantly, my Vita. And I have several buddies whom share a creative bent but don't have iPads or smartphones that I imagine would love working asynchronously together on Utopias. I liked the change of seeing a product expand to a larger market, rather than drip feed barebones iterations to smaller/alternative markets. I'd like to see SC out there in even more flavours so there's both more community content, a bigger incentive for the developer to push out the updates and the brand becomes even more established. Is it best suited to a tablet though? Yes, more than likely. How's your world coming along? Any pics to share? @nightc1: I wasn't sure if that was the case, hopefully their exclusivity will end in the next decade lol. They're not loosening their grip on the CoD franchise... Btw, I have had several iPads for both gaming and work. I got this iPad mini with the explicit intention of using it as a gaming device. It's perfect, size, comfort, weight, portability and looks. If you're not getting one in the immediate future perhaps wait for that rumoured retina version. Either way, I whole heatedly recommend iPad mini over normal iPad as a gaming device. Also, the Vita is damn awesome, but it is getting neglected ATM lol. There's an amazing PSN game called Sound Shapes which has a thriving community whom upload a lot of amazing content daily. It's possibly Sonys' answer to MC except its nothing like MC. If you like being creative, making levels and making music, it's a game to buy a Vita for, which a few friends of mine did lol.
That's pretty much been the plan so far. Retina mini just seems like the perfect idea as long as they don't iPad3 it with the processing power.
How would lava/magma seem more realistic? That's a pretty rare thing in life to see. But yeah, mountain rivers would be cool. Especially if they sprung up during heavy rains. Nicely I did have a big storm last night and lightning set a tree on fire. I was shocked to see that level of detail in the game.
1) Is there anything beside wood that be put in the furnace to make coal? 2) Can you stack weapons and tools in your inventory (have multiple in one square)? 3) Tips for spear-hunting birds? --- Has anyone stumbled upon caves/caves while mining? I don't have I've dug down, but still no caves. Found a nice deposit of malachite and germanium though, can't wait to make copper and start experimenting with electricity and traps. Also for those who have explored the world more than I have, are there waterfalls and other cool natural formations? What about ravines, big underground caverns, or underground lava lakes?
Wait till you get a bucket You can use it to place lava and water spawn points that create lakes and fiery pits as well as waterfalls, springs and other fluid based features. Would be nice to see streams and narrow lakes carving through the worlds naturally, though it could just be the case we haven't found the right seed yet. More than likely since both water and lava exist, there is a seed out there somewhere that will create your perfect setting... I spent a few hours in creative mode this morning, you really can throw up a giant structure much quicker, I kinda like the freedom the mode offers for uninterrupted designing. Still, I'm much more interested in the survival modes, just feels more satisfying knowing each brick took a bit more dedication and effort.
Right, I'm getting frustrated. Can someone please kindly explain how to make and use fire to light caves? I've finally managed to craft a torch and light it but I can't work out how to carry it with me into caves so I can see better a la Indiana Jones. Any advice?
1. No. But in my mine i found not only coal but a solid coal block. The solid block burned long enough to make a bunch of glass. 2. Nope. 3. Haven't had any luck with them yet, but I haven't put much effort into it since a herd of cows (including 3 bulls) were nearby so I had to figure out how to kill them without the bulls killing me (which sadly they did kill me twice before I managed to dig a pit to trap them and also a wall on the other side to protect me. Still, next time I need to make a bigger pit. Maybe using the "Sneak" feature will let you get close to birds? I didn't find anything in my mine yet other than iron, gold, and several other blocks. I like that there are some rocks that you can throw as weapons. Anyway, I need to explore more but right now I'm just working on my little home area.
This game needs more votes in the GotW thread... http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=187500&page=9 ... Side note, had a great time playing the game today. Gotta get some fence up to start rounding up animals for my farm.
I was the first vote --- So any tips for extended journeys from my main home? I have a mining pit by my house but I can't seem to find any more iron or coal, just lots of (malakite?) and germamium. So it's time to venture further inland. My house is built by the coast and I've only explored a small area along the coast. Given the small inventory, I have to pack smart and leave my valuables in my main home. I definitely taking a furnace, crafting table, chests, two leave blocks for a bed. Don't have a compass yet --- Has anyone stumbled onto caves while mining underground? Don't know how deep I've gone, but it's pretty deep...yet no caves Also to the those who have explored more than I have, what kinds of natural formations are out there. Just mountains? What about ravines/canyons or big underground caverns? Arches and overhangs?
My main save sounds a lot like yours. I did start a secondary save just to explore and not worry about death or whatever and have found some natural caves (I blocked myself in with some leaves since there was a ton of coal in it, and to keep the nearby bear out). I've mostly seen mountains, the ocean (which I have crossed to a new area)... but still I need to spend more time just exploring. There is an option in creating a new game to have a sort of peaceful mode separate from creative. So the animals only attack if you attack them. That might be a good option for anyone wanting to just have a save to run around exploring without resorting to going creative mode.
