UK studio Supermono is best known for its excellent MiniSquadron games, but it's been a bit quiet lately. That's because it's been working on an all-new game engine for its future titles.

It's just released a video of the technology working on a demo scene involving what could be the shiniest car ever seen on an iPhone.

But as the description explains, while the new game will feature cars, it's not really a racing game.

    The science bit

As for how the technology works, it uses a technique called deferred rendering, which was popularised in games such as Killzone and Uncharted.

This reverses the usual rendering pipeline (the deferred bit), enabling developers to use lots of dynamic lights in complex ways, albeit creating some issues when it comes to anti-aliasing and alpha blending.

Still, that's a discussion for another science lesson. In the meantime, just enjoy some impressive graphics. As for Supermono's "car but not really racing" game, that's due out in the summer.

Looks impressive. But, if its not a racer, does that mean it's just this tech demo?

Doesn't really look any more impressive to me than the vehicle selection screen in Real Racing 2 I'd actually argue RR2 looks a bit better am I missing something?

Sorry but someone had to say it and I'm sure the engines pretty cool.

I think the big part of the video is the dynamic lighting effects, which are typically omitted from iPhone games to conserve resources.

yeah, i think thats the key the lighting. also, the camera they used to video this was not all that impressive. made me feel like i was watching a 70s tv show.. like 70s yellow filter on check.. laughs.. cool, look forward to see what this new engine that they made can do.

fact they took the time to invest in a new engine for a iso device shows you the confidence developers see in the device. so i say positive thoughts till then.

    chris.
