This is my experience from not ever playing the pc version, watching the TA trailer on the front page and diving right into the iOS purchase. From the start I absolutely hated SCB. I thought it was an overrated indie title with no depth, scarce level design, horrible controls, involving little to no variety in strategy. I deleted the app same day and accepted the loss of a $1, but I couldn't get the charm of SCB's art out of my head. The next day I reinstalled after the latest update to give it another crack and idk, it just clicked. SCB is the epitome of mobile x1000. The graphics are sharp, stylistic, with minute details to weapon recoil/enemy death/explosions. I found strategy once I thought outside of the box and started to exploit dead zones in the map, those little spots you can camp without being hit . I initially thought the controls were broken when my toon kept hopping while running, then realized that was his reaction from stepping over the flamethrower's fire - such a small touch but pretty damn awesome. Some may think I am off base, but my best way to describe SCB is original Mario Bros and Quake Deathmatch thrown into a blender and shrunk down to fit in your pocket. Add more maps/more weapons and SCB would be absolutely perfect. Almost forgot to mention, thanks for adding almost zero load time between deaths and new games, my biggest gripe with these high score titles is that they have a black screen fade or some time of jarring load that pulls me out of the repetition.
Ultimately my original response and follow up essentially come to the same conclusion: you've described the gameplay in such a way that it exemplifies that you have yet to grasp SCB's gameplay concept entirely. The gameplay at it's core is about being a conductor of harmonious chaos. You have the chaos part down, but you're not conducting your cast to work in harmony. When you understand this, you'll also realize the game itself is so easy that there really isn't an emphasis on "twitch" at all. Its through maintaining that harmony of chaos that you understand the game, it's appeal, and can appreciate how well this delicious feast is masterfully buried below multiple layers of gameplay in a ridiculously simple 2D presentation.
Loving your game Vlad I'm not sure if anybody has mentioned it, but there's a bug where if you jump onto the edge of a platform, you'll get stuck and your character will "vibrate". I think I'm holding the direction into the platform, I can get out by jumping. Not sure about hitting the opposite direction. This is with the default initial character (haven't tried with others yet)
well, finished my review. dunno how TA feels about me posting the links and stuff, so here's just my overall verdict, which I stated at the beginning. Super Crate Box is gold. That is all you need to know. Go buy it now if you dont have it. You will not regret it. Unless, of course, you hate games that give a challenge. Otherwise, if you are a true iOS gamer, get it now. Actually, come to think of it, Super Crate Box is much more than gold. Its closer to, say, a house made out of gem quality diamonds. Yea, its that good. Almost. Well, Id rather have the house. But Super Crate Box is just SO MUCH FUN. Now that thats out, on to the actual review. Super Crate Box is an extremely addicting, but difficult platforming game that has recently been ported from the PC to iOS by Vlambeer and with the help of Halfbot. Theres some controversy surrounding the game, relating to the, as some call it, clone called Muffin Knight. It is actually more accurately, heavily inspired by Super Crate Box, as it still does have its own flair. After being delayed a few times, it has finally made it to iOS. This isnt a shoddy port either. Instead, this is a near perfect port, tailored perfectly to iOS.
You don't have to like the game because we do, but we certainly don't have to dislike the game because you do not. There will always be people that do not like, or respond positively to things. It's ok. You not liking SCB doesn't keep me from loving it. Go play something else YOU like. I totally dig the fact that Im into a game that my wife or 5-year old could never play. It separates me from them. They can play Muffin Knight...
I'm curious: will this game will ever receive an iCloud update? It's equally well-suited to playing at home on my iPad/iCade and quick bouts (or longer bouts...) on the go, but it would be nice if my high scores and unlocks weren't so isolated.
1555? I get 55 (once) and I'm happy. LOL. I really want to unlock Ambush mode to see what that is (don't tell me).
I don't see why it isn't already. Multitouch? Seems pretty odd to me that it doesn't let you do this.
