I was way addicted to MK for a good long while....but it wasn't a joyful addiction. I had to level up my character, even if the next level added little to no advantage to said character. And then I got tired of the jerky pauses and the floaty gameplay and the grabs for IAP. The online mode turned out to be pretty lame (boomerangers!) so it's been deleted. SCB plays better and is more satisfying to me. And maybe MK has so many reviews on the app store because it keeps going free?
The Pocketgamer review was much more level headed! http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/Multiformat/Super+Crate+Box/review.asp?c=36553
I certainly don't disagree that MK is a good game. But recent updates, at least on my 2G, killed the game. If I went with the original MK vs. SCB, I'd probably have to say I like both for different reasons. I just thought the STP review was a little harsh. MK has a lot more going for it overall. For some reason, it might be that difficulty in SCB that strangely makes it more addicting to me. And I will get back to MK if they fix the current issues.
Yes, it works with virtual controls in the iPhone 4. I was able to improve my results thanks to this. I use B/A config, to have it the "Game Boy standard". Maybe I can do it thanks to the buttons being very near each other. I don't own an iPad, so maybe the buttons are more separated there and it's impossible.
You've got the gist of SCB's gameplay engine wrong. Twitch reflexes aren't required, and if your play style is such, the tools are there. It has more to do with your own critical thinking and calculating the cause and effect of your all options, and how to attain the next crate. The mundane is offset by the different strategies required for each of the weapons. In a nutshell SCB is less about being the lord-of-the-touchpad and more to do with how long you can maintain perfection. In other words, you're playing it wrong
Are you playing on iPad? Either way, just make sure you shoot whenever you have the chance, that means playing with 3 fingers essentially. 1 for moving, and 1 for jumping and 1 for shooting so you can do both at the same time. Look out for the disc gun though because it will murder you. Also, make sure as few monsters as possible make it through to the bottom, this should be more important than grabbing the box since they will come back angrier. I sucked hard at this game yesterday with scores of about 14 too, but once I played like I described above I unlocked SFMT instantly.
Bugs: vlambeer achievement does not show up in gamecenter. During sfmt mode (construction yard dont know about other sfmt modes) Keeps saying new highscore, even while I don"t get a new highscore
In regards to the ninja not being able to be selected - definitely don't let that stop you from playing!! I'm sure it'll be fixed in the next update, but the game is way too awesome to not play because of this minor issue Yeah not too sure about this one. I mean it's the pistol and dual pistols, but if you have them unlocked it's fine (same case as the ninja) but as mentioned above yes they seem to be black anyway
In your opinion, to which you're entitled, of course. I totally disagree with, well, your entire post... This game is all about how you manage the bad guys, and knowing good strategies to employ with each weapon. I liked Muffin Knight but much prefer what i believe is the more pure, intense experience found in SCB. I can assure you that i'm not usually someone who would achieve high scores in games, yet i've been fairly competitive. Those getting 20 and under will improve if they read through the tips in this thread. Your 'monotonous' is my 'transfixed' - the ridiculous hours i've spent with SCB will testify that!
Oh, I played it "wrong" all right, I don't care. The game isn't much fun and never will be for me. The strategy, such that it is, is simplistic to a fault. The challenge is to execute the strategy while dealing with the speed, squished levels, and oversized hitboxes. If it were slowed down enough, the "game" that you all think is so deep would disappear into a butt simple platformer that would be derided for it's butt simple simplicity brain deadness. That it becomes difficult by speeding everything up past the point you can keep up without enough practice to achieve "perfection" does not make it any better of a game, it just makes it into a twitch fest you can tell yourself isn't one because there is "strategy", it also makes it into work, pretty much the opposite of what I'm trying to accomplish when I'm gaming. If it's fun for you, great, but stop trying to convince the normal people out their that your scrotal piercings are awesome and we should all get a few.
Hey check outt my high score This is the highest I'm going to get, I should probably give SFMT a try.
I've found that in order to get high scores there is a hump you need to get over. My average game is probably 20 or 30 crates these days but if I can get over that, I can easily go into the 90s. You just need to focus and get in a zone, and then it starts seeming ridiculously easy. ...until you disc yourself in the face and have to struggle in the 20s and 30s again.
The disc gun (accidents) doesn't really get me killed too much. Maybe three deaths from it ever. Weapons that get me killed, in order: 1. Minigun: Seems real powerful until 5 bullets somehow miss the skull or somehow don't kill the big monster coming after you. 2. Katana: Somehow missing a flying skull by like a hair and then running right the hell into it. 3. Turtling: Some weapons just suck at gaining ground, especially when the crate is right at the top of the map. It forces you into a no-crate-gain defensive position. Eventually I just try to jump over monsters to grab the crate, and that can cause problems. This time I got killed by a combination of zoning out and the mine bug. Sometimes I'll hit the shoot button and no mine will drop, but the cooldown timer will happen anyway. Sometimes this can happen four times in a row. BUG REPORT!
Clearly you aren't a fan of old school games because they all had simplistic, repetitive gameplay that the goal is to get the highest score (Centipede, Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Frogger, etc.), so if you don't enjoy those games, then it makes sense why you don't like Super Crate Box. Normal people? Normal means what is common, poular, majority, etc. And 3 million people bought Super Crate Box the first day, so the normal iPod app consumer does enjoy Super Crate Box. Go #### yourself.
